Good news for genre fans in Brazil. The delayed digital version of this year's festival is gearing up for next week's launch on the 24th and the complete lineup was announced today. The better news for genre fans in Brazil is that the festival will be free of charge and streamed on a Brazilian streaming platform called Darkflix. Each title will have a view cap of 5,000 and will be geo-locked to Brazil but that's pretty amazing for a country that has been through so much these past few months. 47 feature films will grace this year's lineup. There looks to be a mini retrospective trio of films from Nabwana Igg (Who Killed Captain Alex? Bad Black and Crazy World). I see some familiar...

The more emotion-driven a TV series or movie, the more important the soundtrack. And boy is Normal People, the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s wildly popular novel of the same name, driven by the emotion of its characters and world.
Normal People follows Marianne and Connell’s complicated relationship as they move from being teenagers at a small town in western Ireland into young adulthood at Dublin’s Trinity College, and showrunner Ed Guiney, directors Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, music supervisors Juliet Martin and Maggie Phillips, and editor Nathan Nugent have done an impressive job crafting the music landscape for this world.
“We were trying all sorts of tracks ourselves,” said Abrahamson, who mentioned Martin, Phillips, Nugent, and himself as the chief collaborators in the process. “So, as well as the work that Stephen Rennicks, the composer, was doing, it was just, again, a very organic kind of collaboration.

We all know the CIA runs the music industry. Didn’t The Simpsons leak that years ago? If not a new podcast series will follow the idea to its logical conclusion. If CIA hitman and Gong Show host Chuck Barris could write “Palisade Park,” why couldn’t other agents come up with a catchy tune. Spotify’s latest original podcast documentary series Wind of Change will explore whether the Scorpions’ 1990 song was Cold War propaganda, according to Deadline.
The no longer secret project will be produced by Spotify, along with New Yorker investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe, “Pod Save America” producer Crooked Media, and Pineapple Street Studios, which produced Missing Richard Simmons.
Sung by Klaus Meine, “Wind of Change” was the song which played during the Glasnostic end of the Cold War. Its music video featured the building and dismantling of the Berlin Wall, the most visible symbol of the...

Production has completed on Canada’s latest and wildest genre film, Holy Hell – a collaboration between first time writer and director Ryan Laplante, veteran sound designer George Flores (Antisocial, Septic Man, The Collapsed, Monster Brawl), composer Adrian Ellis (The Scarehouse, Out With Dad) and scream queen Alysa King (Berkshire County).
In the vein of recent horror/comedies like Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun, Holy Hell is a modern take on classic action, horror and exploitation film tropes. And best of all? The goal of Laplante’s movie is to break through every limit set by film, taste and reasonable societal behavior: all with anarchic glee! Check out the trailer below:
Holy Hell is the over-the-top, outrageous, sexually-deviant, blood-drenched story of Father Augustus Bane: a priest pushed too far who begins praying to a revolver and hunting down the gangsters who killed his parishioners.

My friend Justin McConnell makes movies. He does a bevy of other things in the film industry - acquisitions, editing, post-production, festival programming, and what have you - but he really likes making movies. But because he is an independent filmmaker this can sometimes prove to be quite challenging. The first time I ever wrote about a project of his that was nearing development was The Eternal back in 2008, which still has not been made. I do not like digging at old wounds and Justin has gone on to make The Collapsed and Skullworld and has been adapting the novel Kane by Douglas Borton to the big screen (Borton has since released his novel as an eBook under the pen-name Michael Prescott). But The Eternal...

Omar's work speaks for itself. He did work for both Raid films, tiff selection Proxy, the poster for one of Justin's previous flicks The Collapsed and homegrown flicks like Metalhead. Box Wars, where people dress up in elaborate cardboard costumes and stage massive battles, is definitely a great subject for a documentary. The biggest problem with Justin McConnell’s (“The Collapsed”) new film, “Skull World,” is that it rarely gets beyond the “this is super cool” level of examination and analysis. Which is too bad, and feels like a missed opportunity. The subject is weird enough that it should have a movie made about it, and Greg Sommer, who is the main focus, is the kind of crazy, infectious wingnut that, as soon as you meet, you want to learn more about. “Skull World” isn’t bad, but there isn’t much substance to it, either. That’s the frustrating part about the film, you see how much deeper it could go, and you want it to, because it’s fun and fascinating, but unfortunately you get to a certain...

Guys in cardboard “armor” bashing the crap out of each other? Who doesn’t like that? Check out a Red Band trailer for “The Collapsed” director Justin McConnell’s documentary “Skull World”, which is due to rumble onto DVD/Blu-ray later this month. It’s pretty badass, if you’re into covering yourself up with cardboard armor and, as previously mentioned, doing battle, that is. You would definitely have to have a certain mindset to be into this, but hey, who knows, maybe you’re just weird that way. Personally, the only use I’ve ever found for cardboard was packing up my old T-shirts, but maybe I’m missing out… Greg Sommer is an enigma wrapped inside a mystery, encased in a Jean-Jacket Vest. An enterprising man in his early 30s, Greg, and his alter-ego Skull Man, are at war. Box Wars that is. Welcome to Greg’s world.

Featuring: Greg Sommer, Jason Pluscec, Shane Patterson
Justin McConnell's new documentary, Skull World, focuses on the fun but eclectic Greg Sommer and his alter ego Skull Man's Box Wars cardboard-based combat league.
McConnell isn't a documentary filmmaker by trade and usually makes films of the horror variety, like 2011's The Collapsed and the upcoming The Eternal with Michael Biehn. So Skull World is bit of side project for him. What he has delivered is a very unique documentary that serves as a fun tribute to Greg Sommer, his friend and colleague. (McConnell actually participates in the Box Wars and works with Sommer in the film industry.) So we have an interesting merging of objective and subjective matter, which the film hides from.
The filmmakers track Sommer over an approximately four-year period (2008 to 2012) during which we see his meteoric rise bringing his Box Wars tournaments to the masses.

We’re still in the process of developing and growing Daily Dead, so while I’d love to be able to review every single film sent my way, there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. However, I am watching new horror films regularly and wanted to offer my impressions on a number of recently released titles.
This will be my first impressions or mini-review feature and I’m planning on testing the waters with it over the next few months. For the first feature, I’m covering three “survival” movies: [Rec] 3 Genesis, Dead Season, and The Collapsed.
[Rec] 3: Genesis
Director Paco Plaza intentionally set out to create a movie that felt very different from the first two [Rec] films. The found footage elements are mostly removed and we’re presented with a romantic horror film that is carried by Leticia Dolera’s performance.

Some directors just have it. They take what shouldn't work and breathe new life into it. That's exactly what writer / director Justin McConnell did with his post-apocalyptic thriller The Collapsed. When I opened up the envelope and saw it was another grim look at our destroyed Earth, I put up a mental wall and said to myself, "Another one of these movies?"
The movie revolves around a family making their way to the town where they once lived. The parents' oldest son still lives there and they want to make sure he is still alive after an apocalyptic event knocks out all communications and wipes out most of civilization. They find themselves running for their lives through the forest while being hunted by two things: armed scavengers they can see and an unseen force that follows them at a distance but won't reveal itself.

The Collapsed is a new kind of post-apocalyptic horror. This ultra-low budget film focuses on a family of four desperate to survive a mysterious and disastrous event. And there is not a single zombie anywhere to be seen. We chatted with writer/director Justin McConnell about what it takes to approach the apocalypse without the living dead. Tell me how you got started with The Collapsed. Well, we were trying to get a movie called The Eternal made. We've been trying since 2008 - it's a much bigger film. While we were getting that ready, we wrote four other films that are all kind of tied together in the same universe. So we had written all these films in this universe, and we were shopping The Eternal and this...

Canadian filmmaker Justin McConnell shot The Collapsed for only $40,000 and the movie was picked up for distribution by Anchor Bay Entertainment. The film was released on DVD this week and I caught up with Justin to talk about the making of The Collapsed. I also learned about future projects and he shared advice for independent filmmakers who are looking to attract distributors:
While many independent horror films tend to go the slasher route, The Collapsed takes a slower approach and is a more character driven film. What made you decide to go this route for your first film?
Justin McConnell: We knew going into this that we had a small budget. We shot it for $40,000 and we knew that if we wanted to have a lot of gore and non-stop action that it would not look good with the limited budget and time. From the beginning, we wrote it...

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

The post-apocalyptic indie The Collapsed (still confused as to what that title refers to) has enough psychological thrills to mess with your head, as long as you can put up the with the sub-par acting. The story follows a classic nuclear family as they try to survive in a Walking Dead-esque world. But, instead of running from zombies, they are running from other men; or so it seems.
Jon Fantasia, who plays the patriarch, is the strongest of the actors, which is good considering most of the film hinges on him. The rest of the family is comprised of Steve Vieira as the son, who looks like the younger brother of Ringer’s Kristoffer Polaha (and whose acting is no less offensive); Anna Ross as the petulant daughter, who lost her boyfriend in the vague apocalypse and is worried that she’ll have nothing to do the rest of her...
