“Brace Yourself For A Shock!…200 Feet of Living Burning Horror!” Eugène Lourié’s second feature about an irate sea monster wrecking a city features sober eco-preaching, good performances by Gene Evans and André Morell, and several minutes of exciting stop-motion animation nirvana. One just needs to overlook a few lunkhead effects scenes and concentrate on the key Willis O’Brien / Pete Peterson material. It’s a Shock all right — do you prefer to be stepped on like a bug, or fried by a zillion volts of ‘projected radiation?’

If you’ve been keeping up with what Archie Comics have been up to in recent years, then you’re well aware of how they’ve branched out beyond comedy. I mean, not only has the publisher injected more drama into its flagship books, but it’s also released a variety of dynamite horror titles such as Afterlife with Archie, Jughead: The Hunger and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Originally, we’d all assumed that the TV adaptation chronicling the exploits of the teenage witch would land over at The CW and serve as a spinoff to Riverdale, but that’s no longer the case. Instead, the series is headed to Netflix, where it’s been picked up for two, ten-episode seasons.
As a fan of the source material, it’s been a delight to see the hype machine continue on, as some images taken from the series began circulating not long ago.

One day after concluding the second North American leg of their farewell tour, Slayer announced plans to continue the trek into 2019. The iconic metal band are planning shows for South America, Australia and Japan, though they’ve yet to announce specific dates.
In a statement, guitarist Kerry King said the band “always knew” their goodbye jaunt would continue into next year. “We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve been getting here in North America,” he said. “We’ve heard about fans who have driven five, six hours,...

Behemoth (Zhao Liang)
There’s just one thing missing from Zhao Liang’s visually masterful documentary Behemoth: a before image of what this wasteland of coal and rock used to be before God’s beast was unleashed. That creature — as represented by the industrial machine — devours the mountains of Mongolia, exploding large formations into rubble to be separated by the Sichaun people acting as minions. These citizens become the cause and effect,...

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Zhao Liang's Behemoth (2015) is showing April 17 - May 17, 2018 in the United States as part of the retrospective Chinese Independents, Part 1.Over the past few years, a wealth of filmmakers have embraced creative techniques while representing the toil and toll of manual labor across the broad spectrum of modern non-fiction cinema. There have been strict ethnographic chronicles, formally and visually dexterous meditations, sensory explorations as well as political histories. Chinese documentarian Zhao Liang adopts a poetic approach to the subject matter in his extraordinary Behemoth, taking Dante’s Divine Comedy as inspiration for an image-led descent into a hellish underworld (and out the other side) to lay bare the human cost of rampant industrialization in his homeland.Inferno“And of course it is doomed. The mountains, the moors; for a time, for a few decades, they will shelter the wilderness still.

Keep your eyes on the SXSW 2014 website for more details regarding the original's screening (date Tbd), but here's what we know so far:

Behemoth (2011) Stars: Ed Quinn, Pascale Hutton and Cindy Busby Director: David Hogan Writer: Rachelle S. Howie It happens that the SciFi Chan. . . er. . . I mean SyFy Channel. . . knows that its movies are crap. In order to capitalize on this, theyve made tongue in-cheek films starring Deborah (Debbie!) Gibson and joyfully poke fun at their own image. Rest your wallets easy, folks, as other than a couple of monster movies which previously aired on Syfy, this week's genre offerings are really slim pickings. We know you're just chomping at the bit to see yet another horrible retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast story. This one stars Estella Warren, Rhett Giles, Victor Parascos, Vanessa Gray, Tony Bellette and Peter Cook. I mean, who wouldn't be, right?
Luckily, a couple of manga titles are dropping this week to help bring up the quality of entertainment, despite needing to read. Both are created by noted manga writers Kazue Kato and Arina Tanemura, who started their careers in their late teens.

Durham, Nc - The hard truth of cinema takes place at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, Nc from April 14-17. That’s four solid days of movies that don’t feature Natalie Portman’s face being digitally inserted on other bodies. Four days of real people doing real stuff. And you can get some great BBQ.
This years line up has enough goodness to make me have to make painful choices as what to watch. There’s only one screening unless a movie wins a major prize. It’s be there or miss out. Choice wisely. Here’s a few of the films I’m looking to catch:
The Hangman (Thursday 10:20 a.m.) appears to be a creepy classic as it probes the man who executed Nazi Adolph Eichmann. What’s he do now? He ritually slaughters animals. Windfall (Thurs 4:20 p.m.) takes us to Meredith,...

Rejoice Syfy Saturday night movie fans! Behemoth is another original movie that Syfy will unleash on DVD in April. The film is directed by David Hogan and written by Rachelle S. Howie. It stars Ed Quinn (Eureka), Pascale Hutton, Cindy Busby, William B. Davis, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Garry Chalk, Ty Olsson and James Kirk. Vivendi Entertainment will release the flick on April 5th as part of their "Maneater Series". Synopsis:
An earthquake reactivates a long-dormant volcano threatening the small town of Ascension, trembling in its shadow. But the gaping maws in the region reveal evidence of something else a centuries-old subterranean creature at last given the chance to break free in a black cloud of fire and ash. As the Behemoth wreaks havoc, it's a race against time as a small band of rescuers fight it with a force as destructive as the beast itself.

Mock Syfy's original movies all you want, they still do solid ratings. They're also free to watch. How about paying to watch Syfy monster movies about fairy tale trolls, giant worms, and ancient fiends? Would you feel an April's fool to purchase a quartet of Syfy monsters heading to DVD?
April 5th brings two such creature features that start with the letter B. Behemoth (review here) just premiered on Syfy last month and is fastracking its way to DVD shelves. "Eureka" co-star Ed Quinn contends with a giant monster erupting from a mountain to potentially bring about the end of the world, or so says "X-Files" Cigarette Smoking Man, William B. Davis.

The time is nigh for compiling all our end of year "best of" lists. While Monsters & Critics editors are hashing over the stand-out television performances for the last year, we took time out to ask pretty actress Cindy Busby, star of "Heartland," what her top ten list was for 2010. Cindy is gearing up for her upcoming major motion picture debut in Fox 2000 Pictures' "The Big Year" slated for release in 2011, where she will be appearing opposite Steve Martin (she plays Steve's daughter in law in the film), Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. She can also be seen in a supporting lead role in the SyFy movie "Behemoth" starring Ed Quinn and William B.

A monster the size of a mountain? No, a monster that is a mountain. Or is it a monster inside of a mountain that is the size of that mountain? Even afterwatching the trailer for Syfy's Behemoth, I'm still unsure what exactly this tentacled volcano monster is supposed to be.
Rhi Entertainment and Cinetel are the companies unearthing Behemoth, a forthcoming Syfy creature-of-the-week flick directed by David Hogan and starring Cindy Busby of "The Vampire Diaries", Ed Quinn of "Eureka", and William B. Davis, best known to genre fans as "Cigarette Smoking Man" on "The X-Files".
