Aaron Paul became a critically acclaimed actor while appearing in a recurring role on the television series Big Love and earned even more praise – and won two Emmy Awards – for his starring role on Breaking Bad. So why is it that the movie Need for Speed, which starred Paul, underperformed in U.S. theaters this past weekend?
Just because Paul is an award-winning actor on television does not mean audiences were going to pack the theaters to see his movie. In fact, there is a long history of wildly popular television stars who fail in their attempt to transition to movie stardom. In many cases, these TV stars made poor choices when it came to film roles. In other instances, viewers simply had no interest in seeing these actors play anything else but their beloved TV characters.

Comedian-turned-actor Judah Friedlander ("Zoolander," "American Splendor") wears a lot of hats, and that's not to say he's bogged down with multiple titles. No, if you're familiar with his stand-up, VH1 appearances -- or most likely, his role as sketch comedy writer Frank Rossitano on NBC's "30 Rock"-- you've seen his endless array of trucker hats with pithy messages on them ("World Champion" being his most recognizable proclamation). Adding to Friedlander's eclectic résumé is the new indie rom-com "I Hate Valentine's Day," an encore reunion for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" leads Nia Vardalos and John Corbett. Vardalos makes her directorial debut and stars as a Brooklyn florist with a strict five-date philosophy on romance, and...

HBO Video has secured DVD rights to Matt Mulhern's comic drama Duane Hopwood, starring David Schwimmer as an Atlantic City casino worker in danger of losing visitation rights to his daughters after a drunk driving charge. IFC Entertainment, which is releasing the $1 million-range film theatrically Friday in Philadelphia in a slow urban rollout via IFC Films, nabbed second-window pay TV rights, and producers Lemore Syvan of Elevation Filmworks and Marc Turtletaub of Big Beach are finalizing a deal with Showtime for the first window.
