The 2017 Billboard Music Awards paid tribute to rocker Chris Cornell with a touching moment of silence on Sunday.
Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds led the homage, with an emotional speech about the late rocker’s life and legacy.

The brute power of Chris Cornell‘s four-octave voice belayed an inner strength that battled drugs and depression since his earliest days. The voice that brought the music of Soundgarden and Audioslave to millions was silenced on May 17th, when Cornell was found dead in a Detroit hotel room following a concert.
He was born and raised in Seattle, the city that would become the epicenter of early ‘90s rock thanks in large part to his music. By his own estimation, his neighborhood was far from idyllic, low rent and ravaged by addiction. “We were all selling drugs by the...

Fans were notably excited last month when Knife Party finally dropped their long awaited collaboration “Battle Sirens” with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello. The tune had been teased for months after the Australian DJ duo tested it out at Ultra Miami earlier in the year, and they exceeded expectations when the metal tinged Edm banger finally arrived. Now, Twonk mastermind Brillz is back to deliver a rowdy remix of the collaboration.
Brillz kicks off his remix with the reverbed crash of some huge drums, before Morello’s recognizable guitar playing churns out a heavy riff. Steady hand claps and rising siren sounds signal the impending drop, as pitch shifted vocal samples push the track into overdrive. Screeching synths and growling bass forgean explosive rhythm, as punchy drum hits keep the beat going strong.
With his version of “Battle Sirens,” Brillz manages to craft a memorable rework of an already noteworthy track.

Presumably breaking a world-record for the biggest can of worms that’s ever been opened, Rage Against The Machine’s Tim Commerford apologised for his band’s part in creating Limp Bizkit. But though Commerford took it upon himself to single out Fred Durst and co for their crimes against music, he could really have chosen any number of nu-metallers to say sorry for influencing.
The biggest exception to that rule is Deftones. The Sacramento five-piece were dismissed as “Korn-lite” in their early days, but since then they have shown not only remarkable staying power, but expanded and improved their sound, becoming critically-acclaimed in the process.
The 3rd of October 2015 celebrates the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Adrenaline. While it is rightly considered a classic of both genre and artist, Deftones are by far a better band now than they were 20 years ago, both in the live arena and on record.

There's no letting go of grudges in rock 'n' roll, and it appears Rage Against the Machine's bassist has still not settled his beef with Limp Bizkit. Tim Commerford, presumably speaking on behalf of his band, is now taking full responsibility for the existence of the Fred Durst–led rap-metal outfit. He tells Rolling Stone: "I do apologize for Limp Bizkit. I really do. I feel really bad that we inspired such bullshit. They're gone, though. That's the beautiful thing. There's only one left, and that's Rage, and as far as I'm concerned, we're the only one that matters." This of course isn't the first time Commerford has expressed his animosity toward Durst and co. He famously pulled a Kanye-before-Kanye and disrupted Limp Bizkit's speech at the 2000 VMAs, climbing atop a massive part of the stage design while the band accepted the award for Best Rock Video, beating...

“From Everything I’ve seen and learned, prison is not about helping people reform or rehabilitate, or learn to read, or get a job. It’s not about reconciliation or healing the victims of crime. It’s not about public safety, and it’s not about the wellbeing of our communities. It’s about two things: our worst instinct to revenge and the worship of money.”

It’s no secret that Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen of Knife Party come from an instrumental background. Therefore, while it might come as a surprise to the outfit’s newer fans that they would bring Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello onstage during a performance, it’s not as unexpected a homage for longtime listeners.

New York (AP) — Kiss made up, but its music went unheard. Nirvana used four women rockers to sing Kurt Cobain's songs. Becoming a temporary member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band has so inspired Tom Morello that he now intends to make his first solo rock record. Though Morello certainly let his rock god out with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, his four solo sets have been gentler, folkier outings under the moniker The Nightwatchman. After touring with Springsteen in Australia this past summer as the replacement for Steven Van Zandt, who was filming “Lilyhammer,” Morello tells Billboard he was inspired to rock out. “The first time I ever sang with an electric guitar in my hands was 'The Ghost of...

It is called High Hopes, it is out January 14, and yes, your dad would probably accept a "Springsteen Album Iou" in his Christmas stocking if it comes to that. More info for the Bruce buffs: Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine) collaborated on several songs, including the title track, which you can listen to below. There are also a couple of covers. And probably some hidden meaning in the release date — 1/14/14 — if you need an activity to tide you over. Two months! Just hold on, Dad.

With Tea Party activists and immigration hawks having trouble fielding crowds for their events, the Atlantic has declared that immigration reformers are winning the month of August.
But it’s not all happy news for reform advocates. The comprehensive reform bill passed by the Senate -- which contains a pathway to citizenship for the undocumented at the cost of a nonsensical, $40 billion dollar militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border -- remains stalled in the House. And it doesn’t look like House Republicans have much interest in passing it this year.
It’s a frustrating situation. But not unlike U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), when facing adversity, we take inspiration from Chicano lyricist Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine.
For those who still hope Congress can get their act together long enough to pass a rational and humanitarian bill this year, check out 10 songs to...

Nashville, Tenn. — Ozzy Osbourne and the members of Black Sabbath worked hard to create a dark aura around their band in the late 1960s, laying down a proto-metal blueprint for a legion of groups to follow.
As the band's original lineup attempted to reform over the last 10 years to record a long-anticipated new album – the first with Osbourne singing since he was fired in 1979 – there was no need to manufacture that sense of doom. Time and again events conspired to interfere. On its latest attempt, things went more awry than usual. Drummer Bill Ward left the band over a contract dispute. Guitarist Tony Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma. And Osbourne began to drink again.
"Things always get messed up," Osbourne said. "Like Bill had the heart attack on one (in the late 1990s). When Tony got stricken by cancer, we went `This is ... insane. But he turned up every day.

It finally happened. A new Black Sabbath album with Ozzy on vocals. It would have been a full fledged original line-up reunion too if it hadn't been for drummer Bill Ward dropping out after a weak-ass contractual dispute. But that's Ok, because Rick Rubin produced '13' and there's no-one better to produce a Sabbath album than an actual wizard. Brad Wilk from Rage Against The Machine stepped in for the drums on Black Sabbath's 19th studio effort and he does a fine job. This is also the first Sabbath album with Ozzy Osbourne on vocals since 1978's 'Never Say Die', so that's the money right there. The old crew has reunited for several live performances over the years but this is an actual record. A brand new Black Sabbath album. How cool is that? I still don't think it's real and I've...

Tom Morello has played to millions of people in countless venues around the world, and yet a May 19 booking at a movie theater in Kansas City, Mo., could be more meaningful to him than any other.

Following the revelation during last year’s presidential race that Rage Against the Machine was one of Paul Ryan’s favorite bands, many wondered whether the conservative Wisconsin congressman had ever paid attention to the band’s lyrics. After all,
Rage’s former guitarist Tom Morello wrote a stinging assault on the irony of Ryan’s music taste in Rolling Stone last year, pointing out:
I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings!
Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta "rage" in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers,...

The rock world will pay tribute to Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who died April 13 after spending most of the past four years in a coma following a car accident. Sunday (April 21) members of the Deftones and various bands will host a Jam for Chi at Harlow's nightclub in Sacramento, Calif. Tickets are free, but the musicians hope to raise money for Chi's family, including his son, Gabriel.
Earlier in the day, Chi's family invites friends and fans to a One Love Family gathering at Oak Grove Regional Park in Stockton, Calif. "One Love for Chi" was a much-used saying and social media hashtag during Chi's long battle to recover from his injuries.
Musician Shaun Lopez, who produced the Deftones' "Saturday Night Wrist," speaks lovingly of Chi. "He was an amazing, zen-like, anti-rockstar. I'm really sad that he's gone, but I know his spirit will live on through all those that he inspired,...

Black Sabbath has just finished up recording 13, the first record from the band’s original lineup in 35 years. As such, the first single is now available, and it’s a philosophical doozy. “God Is Dead?” clocks in at almost 10 minutes long and features a plodding intro, pretty classic doom metal riffs, and Ozzy Osbourne’s not-terrible-sounding vocals pondering whether God is alive, dead, damned, or what. 13 was recorded in Los Angeles by producer Rick Rubin, features Rage Against The Machine’s Brad Wilk on drums, and will be out June 11 on Vertigo/Republic.
