Writer/director David O. Russell reteams with The Fighter's Christian Bale and Silver Linings Playbook's Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (very briefly too, an uncredited Robert De Niro) for an all-star 70s era tale loaded with fictional characters based on the real life scandal that rocked the East Coast: the back deals that went down attempting to revive Atlantic City. The film moves so well, with not a weak link in the cast, that the overly familiar beats can be forgiven. It's a blast that feels like it could have been made in the past. Here are the five ways you should hustle to this version of the American Dream: 1. The Art of Con. Small time crook Irving (Bale) makes five grand a pop...

Mill on the Doss: Thurber’s Arbitrary Comedy Rests on Laurels of Cast Charm
Filmmaker Rawson Marshall Thurber, whose directorial debut was the Ben Stiller goof-fest Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) returns to the broad humor of star studded formulaic mainstream comedy with We’re the Millers, which, to be fair, has more funny moments than it’s unappealing marketing campaign would lead you to believe. But even with a handful of chuckles, Thurber, who swerved into indie territory with a stagnant 2008 adaptation of Michael Chabon’s The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, along with his four screenwriters, creates yet another strained, contrived cinematic entry, with an ever increasingly ludicrous premise bludgeoned mercilessly into the requisite formula of Hollywood comedy.
Small time Denver drug dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) lives the carefree life of a bachelor until an unlucky scenario outside his apartment complex sees him getting robbed of all his goods and hard cash.

It has been far too long since I have seen Nicolas Winding Refn's Pusher (1996) and I don't remember much about the plot, but the one thing I do recall is the relentless pummeling nature of the narrative. So upon entering the U.S. premiere of Luis Prieto's English-language remake (at Fantastic Fest 2012), I had my seat-belt firmly fastened and I was ready for a wild ride. Let's just say that I am still waiting for that wild ride to begin. Don't get me wrong, I did watch Luis Prieto's Pusher, it was just not nearly as intense of an experience as I anticipated; in fact, it was the complete opposite of intense. I don't know, maybe I am just tired of the drug dealer genre? At this point, all of the plots are the same. Small time dealer is looking for his big break. He forms allegiances...

"24" co-creator Joel Surnow is set to helm "Small Time", a semi-autobiographical indie drama which he wrote and will produce with the help of independent financing says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story centers on a used car dealer in Los Angeles who is still in love with his ex-wife and is dealing with a son that wants to forego college to work alongside his father on the lot. Surnow calls it a buddy movie about two salesmen.
Surnow co-wrote the script in 1976 when he graduated UCLA film school with a friend named Randall Wallace who died three months later. He's come back to it at points over the years but has been getting serious about producing it only recently.
Shooting aims to kick off in April.

We all know Dylan Baker as one of this generation’s finest character actors — turns in Happiness, Spider-Man 2 and 3, Trick r’ Treat are the first things that come to mind for yours truly — and now he’s extending his talents to another department. According to Variety, Baker will make his first stab at directing with the indie drama 23 Blast, a film which will star himself, Justin Long, Stephen Lang, Mark Hapka (Days at Our Lives), and Max Adler (Glee).
Written by Toni and Bram Hoover, 23 Blast centers on “a high school football star (Hapka) who’s suddenly stricken with irreversible blindness and the choice he’s forced to make regarding whether he should return to the sport.” Adler, meanwhile, plays a fellow member of the team; the other roles have not been discussed, but that great lineup has me itching to learn more. Production kicks off next month.

Genre-wise, suburban crime has been good to the Australian industry...Two Hands launched Heath Ledger, Animal Kingdom cleaned up at last year's AFI Awards and.Underbelly still seems unstoppable after three series. Now, Gareth Calverley and Joss King have tossed their hat in the ring with Small Time Gangster. .What I think makes Small Time really stand out,. Calverley tells If, .is that it's not about good guys and bad guys, it.s really just about working class blue collar guys who are trying to make a living.. I think I stole it from Goodfellas.. In fairness to Calverley, this can.t be the first time that thought has occurred to a content maker. .There.s a line in it that says .our...

Small time British film ‘East is East’ (1999) was a stealthy smash hit taking an estimated £10 million at the UK box office and a subsequent £12 million in DVD sales and rentals despite only costing around £2 million to make. The reason for its success? It’s vivid, hilarious and often bitingly painful portrayal of the Khans, a large family of English and Pakistani descent torn between Islamic tradition and British culture in 1970s Salford.

Chicago – As the Oscars are almost upon us, several studios have been releasing Academy Award juggernauts of the past like “Raging Bull,” “Dances With Wolves,” and “The Color Purple.” Consider the re-release of “Almost Famous,” in its “Untitled” form exclusively at Best Buy, an ugly duckling cousin of these releases. Yes, it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (well-deserved) but it missed out on nods it should have received in multiple other categories. Yes, I’m still angry. “Almost Famous” is one of the best films of the ’00s and has held up beautifully since its release just over a decade ago.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
“Almost Famous” is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale about rock ‘n’ roll, groupies, the road, and why people fall in love with music in the first place. It is an assured, complex, brilliant film that features career-best work by Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup along with...

One of my favorite movies of all time is finally coming to Blu-ray, but you might have to search to find it -- it will only be available in Best Buy stores. Paramount Home Entertainment is finally releasing Cameron Crowe's acclaimed drama Almost Famous (The Bootleg Edition) on Blu-ray on January 30th 2011. For those of you who don't know, Almost Famous was edited down considerably for the theatrical release. While the 122 minute theatrical cut is probably the most publicly accessible version of the film, the bootleg "Untitled" cut is the true director's cut of the movie -- featuring about 40 minutes of additional footage. More details after the jump. Here is a low-res photo of the disc's cover art from /Film friend Neil Miller [1] of Fsr [2]. Almost Famous: The Bootleg Cut Blu-ray includes a the longer 162-minute unrated version of the movie. Discdish [3] lists the special features as follows:...

A new eight-part series, titled Small Time Gangster, is set to be shot entirely on location in Melbourne over seven weeks commencing October 18. Small Time Gangster is a comedy that follows Tony Piccolo, an average Aussie bloke who works hard to support his wife and two kids. His family are under the impression that he's an expert at cleaning carpets, but in reality he's a brutal standover man who takes ‘cleaning' to a whole new level. The series focuses on the often hilarious collision of these two worlds. Tackling the central role of Tony is Steve Le Marquand who was last seen on the big screen in Jeremy Hartley-Sims' epic war story Beneath Hill 60 released earlier this year.
