Denis Villeneuve and Jóhann Jóhannsson have collaborated three times in the last few years, with the Icelandic composer scoring “Prisoners,” “Sicario,” and “Arrival.” That partnership was meant to continue with “Blade Runner 2049,” but Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch eventually took over for Jóhannsson on the long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi landmark. After much speculation, Villeneuve has commented on the reason why he chose to go in a different musical direction.
“The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory. It’s an artistic process. You cannot plan things. Jóhann Jóhannsson is one of my favorite composers alive today. He’s a very strong artist,” Villeneuve told Al Arabiya English. “But the movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to Vangelis. Jóhan and I...

Bradford Young, the cinematographer best known for his work across Arrival and the critically-adorned Selma, has boarded Disney’s Han Solo spinoff as director of photography.
First reported by The Film Stage, this is the first tangible tidbit to surface for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s origin story in some time, and further proof that, although Disney and Lucasfilm are mere months away from launching the first Star Wars Anthology film in Rogue One, both parties are quietly assembling the necessary pieces as their vision for a grand cinematic universe begins to coalesce.
And though ticking off the cinematographer check box isn’t a coup likely to steal headlines left, right and center, Young is a fine candidate to shoot a Star Wars movie based on his stellar, diverse track record. Soon after overseeing production on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints three years ago, the prolific Dp executed the...

This morning (April 8) brought the announcement of BAFTA's Television Awards nominations for the period between January 1 and December 31, 2014.
There was cause for celebration - with worthy contenders Happy Valley, Line of Duty, The Wrong Mans and many more recognised - but also cause for consternation, as a few of our favourites failed to make the cut.
Here's just a few unloved shows and stars that we feel were snubbed this year.
The House of Fraser BAFTA Television Awards will take place in London on Sunday, May 10.
Line of Duty, Happy Valley, The Missing lead BAFTA TV Awards nominations
Inside No. 9
Some serious snubbage here - the first series of spine-tingling anthology Inside No. 9 was, by its very nature, a mixed bag, but the episode that star and co-creator Reece Shearsmith has confirmed was submitted for BAFTA consideration - the almost entirely silent 'A Quiet Night In' - was...

A whole bunch of Scream Factory goodness was dropped into our inbox this morning, so let's forgo the usual chit-chat and cut right to the chase!
First up, the world's greatest distribution company announced on their Facebook page that they're bringing three titles to Blu-ray for the very first time this coming fall, kicking off with a double feature release of 1972's Tales from the Crypt and 1973's The Vault of Horror.
The two classic British anthology films will be housed together as a double feature on Blu-ray (both for the first time) and Vault will be presented in its uncut form.
Also announced was the 1985 grave robber thriller The Doctor and the Devils, which was produced by Mel Brooks and stars Timothy Dalton, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Rea, Jonathan Pryce…and even Twiggy!
No dates have been set in stone, but both discs will arrive sometime in the fall.
In the meantime,...

One of my favorite cinematographers working today is Roger Deakins. Over his 40 year career, the British director of photography has worked with everyone from the Coen Bros to Martin Scorsese to Ron Howard to Sam Mendes. He has already received a total of 10 Academy Award nominations, but has yet to win, which is a disappointment for many reasons. However, he's still hard at work, and will probably receive a nomination this year for Prisoners (in theaters this week) after earning a nomination last year for Skyfall. Our friends recently came across this fantastic 9-minute interview with Deakins talking about working with the Coen Brothers and Scorsese. It's a vintage interview, but worth watching if you're a big fan of Deakins like we are. Special thanks to our friends Awards Daily and The Film Stage for first finding this video on YouTube. The 9-minute featurette includes director Mike Figgis (The House,...

It’s time for another update from our friends at Arrow Video, this time previewing their March 2012 releases which encompass sleazy horror, cult British action movies and gory, cheesy sci-fi… The highlight for me in March’s releases? Definitely has to be Don’t Go In The House.
Who Dares Wins (Arrow Video)
The 60 Second War Begins Now! Paranoia, black ops and espionage combine in Who Dares Wins, a violent and edgy anti-terror classic starring Lewis Collins (The Professionals) and Edward Woodward (The Equalizer). The anti-nuclear movement is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative at a violent protest, the secret services call on the aid of the Sas. Captain Peter Skellen (Collins) risks his career, his family and his life to infiltrate the terrorist group before they can unleash an attack that will devastate the country. Relive a classic cold war...

Come in from the cold, stranger, and prepare yourself for the best and bloodiest work from Hammer horror's archetypal vampire countess. Let me take your scarf ...
Following Ingrid Pitt's death at 73, apparently from heart failure, her daughter Steffanie told the BBC the actor should be remembered as the vampire countess with the "wonderful teeth and the wonderful bosom". There seems little doubt Pitt will remain associated with the particular blend of gore and sex appeal that typified the Hammer movies of the early 1970s, and which remain her trademark.
Ingoushka Petrov was born in Poland in 1937 to a German father and Jewish mother. Confined to a concentration camp for much of the war, she later moved to Berlin where, in the 1950s, she married an American soldier. They moved to California but the marriage failed and she returned to Europe. In the 1960s, Pitt worked with the Berliner Ensemble theatre company under Helene Weigel,...

- Marcello Paolillo met with helmer Neil Jordan and actors Cillian Murphy and Stephen Rea in New York. Stephen Rea Q: If I’m not wrong, you have done 9 films with Neil Jordan [Angel, Butcher Boy, The Company of Wolves, The Crying Game, The End of the Affair, In Dreams, Interview with the Vampire, Michael Collins and now Breakfast on Pluto]. How would you describe your relationship? A: After so many years, our relationship is very particular. In certain occasions, Neil comes up to me and says: “You know, I think you should be in this movie, but I’m not sure what you should do”. It happened for Michael Collins, and also for The Butcher Boy, when he had the idea of having me play both the father and the voice of the son when he gets older. Also in this case, he told me: “I want you in the film. Read the script and tell me if you like Bertie.” It’s a very small part, but for the moment that he is in the movie,
