While Bonnie McKee's "American Girl" and Ke$ha and Pitbull's "Timber" were a joy to many ears this year - and Phoenix pleased critics with their Bankrupt! album - there were a slew of great songs released this year that the average listener may not have heard. People has compiled a diverse list of 20 lesser-known tracks from 2013 that surely seemed worth sharing. From dreamier soft songs by Washed Out and Rhye, to drum and bass by Wilkinson and Logistics, as well as some danceable tunes by Jbag and Classixx - there should be something for everyone on the playlist below.

Downtown La is ready to chill. And dance. And sway. And chill some more. Fyf Fest is back this Saturday and Sunday at La's State Historic Park. We remember when the It guy at our last job was the only one talking about this local music festival. Now eight years deep, the Fuck Yeah Festival draws in more and more crowds each year.
While the biggest names are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mgmt, TV On The Radio and My Bloody Valentine, we don't need to tell you what you already know. Those bands are headlining, the crowds will be there. But for a fresher experience, check out our suggestions for the top 6 bands that you don't want to miss.
Weekend Passes are $99 and can be purchased online. Day passes are sold out. Be sure to consult our Survival Guide for tips, courtesy of La Canvas.

Robin Thicke, the man behind the biggest (and most controversial) hit of the summer so far, has chosen the Virgin Mobile FreeFest as the only music festival he's going to play this summer. The "Blurred Lines" singer is one of the top acts coming to the benefit concert that helps raise money for youth homeless shelters.
Other acts joining Thicke include Mgmt, Vampire Weekend, Kaskade, Pretty Lights, the Avett Brothers, The Knocks, City and Colour, Black Joe Lewis, Icona Pop, Chvrches, Skye Ferreira, Washed Out, Little Green Cars, Tjr, Ghost Beach, Madeon, Manufactured Superstars, Congorock and Gareth Emery.
Admission is free for the festival (hence the name), but you still need a ticket to get in. And they organizers ask for donations for their homeless shelters, having raised nearly $800,000 over the last couple summers.

So the lineup for Fyf, or F*ck Yeah Festival, 2013 is pretty much amazing.
The big names: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, My Bloody Valentine, TV on the Radio, Beach House, Yo La Tengo, Deerhunter, Mgmt, Devendra Banhart, Washed Out, Solange and Flag.
Our other personal favorites: Kurt Vile, Thee Oh Sees, Foxygen, Charles Bradley and, of course, the legendary Jonathan Richman.
The lineup is so fantastic that single-day tickets sold out soon after they went on sale Thursday at noon. Weekend passes are still available for $99. Sure, that's a lot more than the "good old days" when Fyf was Diy and $20... but we still think the lineup makes it worth it.
See the poster lineup below, and check out photos of some of the bands we're excited for:...

I have always believed in a scary Halloween; one filled with monsters and blood and scares. None of that "cutesy witches and kittens with funny hats" crap for me.

After touring as Washed Out’s keyboardist, Phil Jones recruited members of Balkans, Mood Rings and Red Sea as well as Washed Out’s touring drummer Cameron Gardner to form Dog Bite. Like Washed out and Toro Y Moi, who Dog Bite is currently touring with, Jones’ new project features reverberating vocals, watery guitar lines and the general dreamy expansiveness that has come to define the “chillwave” sound of his contemporaries....

Arriving on the scene a little bit late for day two of Counterpoint Music Festival (I’m sure I wasn’t the only one after what I saw on day one), I was just in time to catch Washed Out on the main stage. One thing that immediately sets Counterpoint apart from many other outdoor festivals is the proximity of the two main stages; the Point stage and the Counterpoint stage sit side by side and the music is non-stop, with one act picking up the party as soon as the one next door lets up. Washed Out picked up their set...

The prolific cellist, composer, singer, and musician Arthur Russell defied musical classification, and two decades after his death his music still resonates with listeners across the musical spectrum. "Freak folk" singer Devendra Banhart is a fan, as is contemporary classical composer Nico Muhly, who referred to Russell as “the first modern musician.” Russell, who made his home in the East Village of New York in the 1970s until his death from AIDS in 1992, touched the lives of some of our most beloved artists, including Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, and David Byrne.
To celebrate Russell’s life and legacy, the popular production company Red Hot (in conjunction with Pitchfork), has been raising funds to produce an Arthur Russell tribute album. Rounding up famed musicians such as Twin Shadow, José González, Hot Chip, the Swedish dance chanteuse Robyn and the Scissor Sisters to reinterpret Russell’s songs, the album promises to be...

It was a music-filled weekend in the forest for Vanessa Hudgens and boyfriend Austin Butler. The couple braved the freezing cold weather in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, where they attended Outside Lands, a music, food, wine, beer and art festival, set up like a wonderland in the wilderness. Sitting on a blue tarp early Friday evening, Hudgens and Butler chilled out right before watching a set by Canadian electronica duo, Mstrkrft. "Vanessa was on her cell phone, while Austin laid down next to her, seeming super relaxed," an onlooker tells People. But once the set began, Hudgens got up...

Dreamy summertime artist Twin Shadow came to prominence on the back of Forget, his 2010 debut album produced by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. That album spawned easy comparisons to artists like Washed Out and Toro Y Moi and defined the Dominican crooner’s sound—intense vocals over soft, irresistible synthesizer hooks. On July 10, Twin Shadow will release the follow-up to Forget, titled Confess. In support of Confess, Twin Shadow will embark on the three-month North American “Ton Up” tour, starting July 21 at Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle and wrapping up across the country at Webster Hall ...

In addition to all the usual joys of spring—warm weather, extra daylight hours, outdoor drinking—fans of chillwave phenom Washed Out (or at least of the band’s song featured in Portlandia) have a little extra something to look forward to in the coming season. Perhaps emboldened by the warm weather, the lo-fi bedroom synth-pop outfit is taking things out of the bedroom and onto the road. Whoever posited that “it’s not the destination, but the journey” never heard chillwave. That most mellow of modern genres eschews most hallmarks of traditional songcraft in favor of gooey, often aimless texture wrought by synthesizers, drum machines, and shy vocalists. It’s psychedelic elevator music, and nobody takes the elevator to revel in the ride. But as that sound’s original architects (Washed Out, Neon Indian, Toro Y Moi) move on to Balearic beats or full bands, a new breed of Nü Age drifter arrives. Brooklyn’s Young Magic, a.k.a. Aussie-born Isaac Emmanuel and his compatriots, joins ...

At first, Chairlift seems quintessentially, almost insufferably hip. The group got its start at a Colorado college, then graduated to Williamsburg intent on making “live music for haunted houses.” Singer/synth-player/songwriter Caroline Polachek guested on Washed Out’s latest, and producer/bassist Patrick Wimberly oversaw the beats on Das Racist’s Relax. And while Chairlift’s 2008 debut, Does You Inspire You, did swap out goth-y lurk for pop promise, it was unclear whether the duo would deliver a follow-up befitting its new major-label trappings. But that upgrade should’ve been a sign: Something sounds meant to succeed, not ...

Blake Shelton was already a beloved country star before he became a reality-tv double-threat. In spite of being lumped in with bedroom-bound ’80s obsessives like Toro y Moi and Washed Out, Dominican-born George Lewis Jr., a.k.a. Twin Shadow, distinguishes himself on his debut album, Forget, with pungent synthesizer and crooning vocals that ride atop his songs instead of settling, shoegaze-like, below the instrumentation. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear handled production in addition to signing Twin Shadow to his Terrible Records label, so he’s due some credit for the record’s gloomy, idiosyncratic soundbank and new-wave charms. Without having heard Small Black’s previous Ep or this debut LP, New Chain, it wouldn’t be too difficult to divine the band’s glossy, lo-fi lope given only its origin as a beach-house bedroom-recording project and the Washed Out name-checking lyrics to “New Chain.” So while there’s little to surprise chillwave aficionados here, there is a clutch of songs—nearly too brief to make an impression—that prove that Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner were saving their powder for the full length, with more layered instrumentation, greater variation between songs, and vocals that, while as ghostly as ...

Following on from an insightful chat about The Big Lebowski, here is part one of our Double Feature film costume review with Kristin M. Burke from FrockTalk.com.
Fewer motion pictures have warranted so much over analysis as The Big Lebowski (1998). The Coen Brothers, extraordinarily talented as they are, simply did not write all the hidden meanings that magazines, blogs, and now even books have subscribed to the piece. The Big Lebowski is a far-out fun detective homage, just not as deep as some people think.
So without disappearing on our own magic carpet ride, let’s have a look at the film’s costume design by Mary Zophres (Ghost World, 2001; A Serious Man, 2009) and tell you why it rocked so hard in an almost completely non-subtextual way.

While bloggers raced to name the sound of Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo—“hypnagogic pop,” “chillwave,” and “glo-fi” being some of the more creative labels—he was probably resting easy, confident not only because he was being heralded as the tip of a rapidly expanding stylistic iceberg (see Memory Tapes, Nite Jewel, Washed Out, et al.), but because he’d done a far better job at naming his own songs than any critic could ever hope to.
