Comic Books 101: DC Comics-Reading Batman Pt 2
Previously I wrote an article helping new readers figure out the best places to pick up Batman from DC Comics . For those confused or still uncertain about major events in DC Comics (which connect to various “jumping on” points for Batman) I wrote an article detailing the big company altering stories in my history of the DC Universe article. This time around I am going to open up a bit more on the adventures of The Dark Knight, and take a look at some of the bigger, and in my opinion, best stories for potential Batman readers. This will include small and big story lines that exist in various continuities within the DC Comics publication history for the character. There won’t be any set “this is better than that” to the stories listed, simply moments in the characters publication where a...

Comic Book Reviews: DC Round-up Week 07-27-2016
DC’s Rebirth is going strong, as the company gives us some fantastic books with great creative teams. Geoff Johns begin given more power and helping craft this road for the company was definitely the smart choice here. So with all the praise being given, there are a few areas I’d like to see some improvement. The most important is being “continuity”. Part of what brought about this change was getting the characters back to basics, back to remnants of their pre-new52 personas which so many readers were drawn too. That’s great, and I think it’s starting to show through the writers the company has on each title (thus far). However, there are some aspects that make feel like these books exist in their own self-contained worlds, which is fine, but then at other points some series try to reference other series,...

Despite the cold shoulder Marvel is giving its first superhero family, Dr. Doom is actually thriving in the world of comics. After last year’s Secret Wars, Victor Von Doom became God, finally had the scars on his face removed, and now he will don his very own Iron Man suit. Slated to be titled The Infamous Iron Man, Victor Von Doom has been announced as one of the two new Iron Avengers, with the other of course being Riri Williams, a 15-year-old African American girl who built her own Iron Man suit in her dorm room. Alex Maleev, the artist for the upcoming Infamous Iron Man series, has provided us with some early looks as to how Dr. Doom’s new suit will look this fall.
Dr. Doom is easily my favorite villain and I could not be any more excited for a shift in the status quo. Although...

There are different themes and moods associated with each season that, aside from the weather, make them remarkably different from one another. Summer in particular is associated with vitality, energy, and joy, while winter, in contrast, is most linked to death, lethargy, and hopelessness. These seasonal moods extend to all aspects of pop culture like movies and music too. Albums like 808s and Heartbreak, Reflektor, and Led Zeppelin IV are clearly winter albums, while Some Girls, True Blue, and Californication are without question summer albums.
Even comic books reflect this trend as some are more fit for particular seasons or times of the day than others. Some comics like Daredevil and Batman are nighttime books, while Superman and Amazing Spider-Man are daytime books. Batman Red Rain should be read around Halloween, while The Ultimates and The Ultimates 2 are the comic book equivalent of summer blockbusters. Below is my list of...

Less than five years after relaunching its entire superhero comic-book line, DC Comics is preparing for a Rebirth.
But the undertaking beginning this May is actually more ambitious in its own way, according to DC co-publisher Dan Didio. While “The New 52” created a clean slate for Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other iconic characters in the fall of 2011, Rebirth is more of a greatest-hits situation that pulls from all eras of DC lore to build a cohesive storytelling universe. What exactly does that mean? That’s something Dan Didio and DC comics have been very dodgy about.
What we do know we are getting treated to a similar situation as the launch of the New 52, big flashy creative teams and vague descriptions like “going back to basics”. How will Rebirth play out? Well no one will truly know until the books drop this May starting with the 80 page DC: Rebirth written by Geoff Johns.

Justice League #47
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Jason Fabok
Colorist: Brad Anderson
Letterer: Rob Leigh
Publisher: DC Comics
Act Three of the biggest DC Event yet begins here and like the issues preceding it…you begin to see the connections and plot threads begin making steps forward to what’s no doubt going to be a phenomenal endgame in the next few issues.
Wonder Woman remains the anchor for the events that go down, and it’s nice of Geoff Johns to call on relationships of characters and events that reference past Justice League arcs (Some greater than others.). After going through versions of their personal Godhood, members of the Justice League finally begin to realign and focus their efforts on the one common enemy that’s been plaguing them since the beginning. There are certain bits that start to feel like they’re replaying scenes from different views and more...

Cyborg #5

Pencils by Felipe Watanabe and Daniel Hdr
Layouts by Ivan Reis
Inks by Albert Oclair, Júlio Ferreira, Andy Owens, and Juan Castro
Colors by Adriano Lucas and Pete Pantanzis
Lettered by Rob Leigh
Publisher: DC Comics
The Techno Apocalypse is well underway in the penultimate issue of Cyborg’s first arc. The S.T.A.R Lab Team and the Alternate Universe Tekbreakers retreat for a reprieve against the Technosapiens and the battlefield. They’ve turned Detroit into for a last ditch effort to end this war. In this dialogue heavy issue, there are doses of supporting characters gaining a voice and some spotlight while Cyborg and company take a backseat for the revelation heavy portion.

Published by DC Comics
Batgirl #45 is a shining example of when a superhero comic takes a break from the punching, kicking (Even though there is some slick acrobatics featuring Batgirl and Dick Grayson in the middle part of this comic.), and bad guy fighting to focus on the hero and the important relationships in his or her life. In Barbara Gordon’s life, she gets to celebrate the marriage between her friend, old roommate, and the longest tenured member of her civilian supporting cast Alysia and her girlfriend Jo, start to develop a relationship with her wedding date Luke Fox (formerly Batwing) through bowtie flirting and little kisses, and in the main development of this issue, come to terms with her feelings for Dick Grayson. This week, I am deciding to eat my vegetables before dessert and am reviewing the Ultimatum crossover series many weeks before I get to it in my History of the Ultimate Universe series. I am also combining my column with our mini event “Worst Comics Month”. This is because after I finished binge reading Ultimate Spider-Man Volume One and decided to read this “Ultimatum” series, which filled the gaps in some of the final issues, I (the neophyte comics fan) felt like I had truly experienced a bad comic with its ugly art, “shocking” plot reveals with little or no build-up, and jarring switches in tone from Hulk switching from dumb to smart to in between in the space of a panel to...

For comic book fans of a certain age, few comic book stories are remembered as fondly as Marvel's 1984 mega-hit Secret Wars. A yearlong series that birthed countless Marvel fans, Secret Wars was memorable, even if the story—standard rock 'em, sock 'em stuff—doesn't hold up. Now, thirty years later, Secret Wars is happening again. The news was announced Thursday night at the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. exhibit in Times Square at New York Comic-Con. Marvel exec Dan Buckley only had the scantest of details to share: the event will be written by Jonathan Hickman as...

Former Green Lantern and current Justice League writer Geoff Johns sat down for an in-depth interview with IGN, released today on their website. At the conclusion of Forever Evil, iconic Superman villain Lex Luthor joined the team, apparently sincere about reforming himself. "We're about to do a storyline this October called The Amazo Virus that really delves into Luthor trying to put the past behind him," Johns explained. "But because of all the things he's done, the past catches up with him." The storyline was previously revealed in solicitations, and will be the first issue illustrated by series-newcomer, Jason Fabok -- a fan-favourite artist on many of the Batman titles for several years (including Batman: The Dark Knight and more recently, Batman Eternal). "I can't wait for people to see his pencils. I tend to work with the same artists a lot, because there's nothing more important than a collaborator when you're working in comics,...

By rights, 2011's Green Lantern should have kicked off a DC Cinematic Universe the same way that Iron Man did for the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2008. Unfortunately, the divisive movie was not a box office success - mainly because the budget spiralled out of control - and we've seen nothing of Hal Jordan since. At a recent Los Angeles Q&A for the release of Forever Evil, Comic Book Resources quote comic book and television writer and DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns as saying the following about the possibility of a Green Lantern reboot. "There's always talk of everything," he told one fan at the event, before adding: "I can't talk about anything else." We may be clutching at straws here, but there's been "talk" of rebooting the franchise? That could be a good sign for fans of the character, and while Warner Bros. and DC Comics...

We've known for a while that both Lex Luthor and Captain Cold (who each helped save the world in the pages of Forever Evil) would soon join the Justice League, but that doesn't make the scene below from issue #33 of that series any less shocking! After working out that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same, Luthor tried blackmailing his way onto the team, leading to the Caped Crusader convincing Superman and Wonder Woman into allowing the villain to become a member in a bid to leep an eye on him. While it seems unlikely to happen for a long time - if at all - you have to admit that it would be interesting to see this play out in live-action between Henry Cavill and Jesse Eisenberg in a future Justice League movie! What do you guys think?...

DC Comics’ massive Universe-wide event Forever Evil was way too large to amass in one volume. The story continues in the graphic novel Justice League Volume 5: Forever Heroes. It collects issues 24 through 29 of the dramatic action-packed monthly series.
Dick Grayson and a band of super heroes come against the Crime Syndicate when it appears the Justice League has been eradicated by Ultraman and his group of evil doppelgangers. However, Owlman has ulterior motives for Batman's former sidekick and wants Nightwing alive.
Cyborg is one of the last remaining Justice League members ready to do battle and needs to recruit some fresh soldiers for his army. After being upgraded by his father, the cybernetic warrior turns to the only group he is sure can defeat Ultraman and his gang. Will the Metal Men join him in his crusade against Earth's malevolent enemy of the hour? Geoff Johns pens the...

Two worlds collide again in DC Comics’ event graphic novel Forever Evil. The book collects all seven action-packed issues of the limited series. Although many might say they’ve tread familiar ground before through Grant Morrison’s Jla: Earth 2, there’s a lot of intrigue and excitement to take in here.
Reports are coming in from all corners of the world that the Justice League is no more. A villainous group calling themselves the Crime Syndicate claim responsibility for their demise and ownership of the Earth. The surviving super heroes must join forces with a formidable army of foes fronted by a man who can't be trusted. His name is Lex Luthor and he's leading the Legion of Doom to battle alongside our planet's greatest protectors.
Geoff Johns once again gives comic book fans a reason to jump for joy with Forever Evil. With all the drama, danger, and...

After the Crime Syndicate exposed his identity in Forever Evil, Dick Grayson is now a top secret super spy for the Spyral organization. This organization first appeared in Grant Morrison’s Batman Inc and exists to hunt down errant metahumans. Writer Tim Seeley and co-plotter Tom King revive this concept to give Dick Grayson something to do in an universe that unfortunately knows his secret identity. Seeley and King give Dick an intriguing first mission that seems simple on the outside, but ends up having multiple layers of intrigue along with some plot twists and cameos from high profile DC Universe characters. Meredith Finch and her husband/Forever Evil artist David Finch are set to take over Wonder Woman from Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang. Their run will begin with Wonder Woman #36 this November, and the focus will apparently now be on Wonder Woman's, "interpersonal relationships and her responsibilities to the Amazons and her fellow heroes in the Justice League." That sounds like a far more traditional take on the character than the current creative team's exploration of Diana's ties to Greek mythology, and Meredith (who has so far written short stories for Zenescope Entertainment) is quoted as saying, "It makes sense if you're going to try to attract that female market that you appeal to them on every level -- your writing demographic reflects the demographic of your readership." What do you guys think about the new creative team?...

Several days ago, we uncovered some details on DC's mysterious April 2015 project - dubbed "The DC Band-Aid" by Bleeding Cool - and now an alleged "DC Comics creator" has provided more on the event. We knew that it will hit during the company's relocation to Burbank and will be produced in advance, and the creator confirms that pre-52 and New 52 characters will feature, but it seems that the conclusion of Geoff Johns' Forever Evil doesn't have anything to do with it despite previous speculation. Here's the full statement, courtesy of BC: There still seems to be confusion among editorial, and thus, creators, as to what the title and plot actually are, and it has changed several times. The current plot might be comparable to Marvel’s Contest of Champions/Secret Wars from back in the day. As of now, it is intended to be in-continuity and not an Elseworlds-type story.

I'll be the first to admit my pessimistic attitude when it was announced a few months back that Dallas Comic-Con was sold to FanExpo out of Canada. I felt as if my hometown event was being invaded upon and diluted. How could a company out of Canada know what us hard-to-please folks in Texas really want? After this year's Dallas Comic-Con, I can tell you they know a whole lot about what we Southerners are looking for than you would think.
With the exception of maybe one show, I've attended every Sci-Fi Expo and Comic-Con that's taken place for the past thirteen years. I was there when the events alternated between the Plano Centre and the Richardson Civic Center. I covered the very first show at the Irving Convention Center. Justice League United #0 and #1
Jeff Lemire, Mike McKone, Marcelo Maiolo
DC Comics
Jeff Lemire and Mike McKone’s Justice League United #0 presents part one of a five-part story, making issue #1, the second comic DC has released this month, that is wrongfully billed as a first issue. It’s essentially just the second chapter of a quinary story arc.
Following the “Forever Evil” crossover, Justice League United kicks off with a fresh spin and an alternative super team, set in Canada, and that includes several favourite B-list heroes, and 2 new characters never before seen.
Written by Canadian native Jeff Lemire, famous for Essex County, and who’s since gone on to establish himself as an important writer for DC and respectively Vertigo, Justice League United is just good enough, to keep all the DC Comics crazed readers out there happy while keeping the rest of us earthbound types in moderate thralldom.

Justice League United #0
Written by Jeff Lemire
Art by Mike McKone
Colored by Marcelo Maiolo
Published by DC Comics
First of all, I feel a bit odd as an American is reviewing a book that was originally called Justice League Canada for a Canadian website. Nonetheless, Justice League United #0 is a weird, little book filled with laughs, obscure characters, and a bit of science fiction tinged mystery. It features some underused and potentially interesting DC Universe characters, like Martian Manhunter and Animal Man, as well as a new teen Cree hero from rural Ontario. Writer Jeff Lemire and artist Mike McKone really commit to the rural Canadian setting even if “Justice League Canada” currently has one member who is actually Canadian. McKone and colorist Marcelo Maiolo depict the snow drifts and trees near Moose Bay, Ontario with care and detail contrasting the dreary Canadian winter with the colorful and mysterious alien visitors.

After a quiet couple of weeks, there was an absolute deluge of new comics from all of the publishers this week!
Marvel unleashed a ton of even more All-New Marvel Now! #1s and followed up their #1s from last month with some #2s and #3s – Marvel are simply relentless in their quest for more readers at the moment! They want every demographic picking up their comics and, with all these new releases, they’ve got the range to appeal to nearly everyone.
DC put out their regular assortment of titles with the penultimate issue of Forever Evil hitting shelves. Their releases so far this year have been very muted and uninspired compared to the fanfare of Marvel’s new wave of comics. DC are much more restrained with the #1s these days, saving up their big releases like weekly comics Batman: Eternal and Futures End for later in the year.

Robot Chicken and DC Comics are teaming up again and it's front-page news — literally. The comic book publisher is producing variant covers for 22 of its March issues to celebrate Robot Chicken DC Comics Special II, the second edition of the Adult Swim hit's parody of the DC Universe.
The first special, which aired in 2012, showcased DC's super friends — including Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman — in Robot Chicken's trademark stop-motion style and irreverent humor. The second chapter, subtitled "Villains in Paradise," premieres this spring and puts the spotlight on the Legion of Doom, including Lex Luthor, the Joker and Catwoman. Robot Chicken creators and Stoopid Buddy Stoodio's co-founders Seth Green and Matthew Senreich worked with Geoff Johns, DC's chief creative officer, on both episodes.
Last time around, DC offered a special variant cover to its Aquaman comic. To celebrated "Villains in Paradise" they are producing 22 special versions, some of them delightfully disturbing.

This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson’s anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day.

In comics news this week, it’s all change at DC in April. Justice League of America and Teen Titans are both coming to end, Jla with #14 and Teen Titans with #30 and an annual to follow. Kyle Higgins will also be leaving Nightwing behind as a new creative team takes over. In the Jla’s place will be Jeff Lemire’s Justice League United, previously billed as Justice League of Canada.
Justice League United will mostly be holdovers from the Jla with Stargirl, Martian Manhunter, Hawkman and Green Arrow returning with new members Animal Man, Supergirl and Adam Strange. Also included will be a new character created by Lemire – a superpowered Cree teenager from the Canadian area where the team are headquartered. The reason behind the name change was because it’s a partial cosmic series that takes place in Rann and Thanagar as well as Canada. Justice League United is out in the Spring.

On The Decision To Make Lex Luthor A Member Of The Team: As Forever Evil wraps up — and I don't want to totally, obviously, spoil the ending of it all, but things lead to Luthor feeling like he is the world's greatest hero and that he belongs with the world's greatest heroes, and he's going to give it a go, despite the fact that he doesn't have a code name, and he doesn't have any experience being a superhero. Ultimately, that's a big part of what he's going to deal with in Justice League, is what happens when he has an arch-enemy, or when he's going to get attacked by somebody, and they hit him on a personal level? When he puts himself out there, it becomes very clear to him that he's going to experience things, when he's on the Justice League, that he never really considered. On His...

Kord Industries has been teased repeatedly on The CW's Arrow so it wasn't too much of a stretch to expect some synergy to materialize within DC Comics' New 52. The link between the two, comes from Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics, occasional script writer on Arrow and the architect of Forever Evil. Speaking to Newsarama, Johns would only state, "Ted Kord returns to the Dcu in Forever Evil #7, and plays a role in Justice League post-Forever Evil." However, this was enough to set the internet afire with speculation and fan theories. With Superman, Flash and Green Lantern departing the 'League' and Lex Luthor, Captain Cold and (presumably) Ted Kord joining, the New 52 should be a very interesting place, post-Forever Evil. And what does Kord's return mean for Jaime Reyes, the teenage Blue Beetle that had his series cancelled back in February...
