Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.
Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.
In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.
To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
‘ Twas the night before Christmas not a creature was stirring. Except for the dude on fire. Twenty years go by and Butler Mansion sits empty waiting to be sold. A lawyer representing the heir comes to town to close on the property. The Mayor, Sheriff, and a mute John Carradine are all eager to be rid of the place. Seems to have a lot of bad mojo. But unfortunately a serial killer breaks out of an asylum making a bee line...

There are a few fan favorites from the VHS era that are favorites solely because of they are completely indicative of the VHS boom in the mid 80’s. One movie that would qualify for this distinction would be Terror on Tape. It’s got one of the sexiest covers in the history of media packaging and is ripe for the nostalgic horror fan who sees a VHS tape being squeezed by a monster hand as a symbol of their own frustration and adoration for this somewhat lost medium (somewhat lost because it’s making a creeping comeback). Comet Video and Continental (same thing different name) put this one out as a sort of advertisement for the titles that Continental was distro-ing. Little did they know that the film itself would take on its own life as a piece of iconographic advertising. It’s a collection of short clips from some...

Ashley Bell has been a working actor since her teen years, appearing in plays in Los Angeles and in guest spots on TV shows, most notably the Showtime series "United States of Tara." Last year Bell signed on to play a girl seemingly possessed, in the low-budget horror film "The Last Exorcism." The weekend it opened, Bell flew into Los Angeles International Airport and was promptly swamped by paparazzi. "I didn't understand why there were all these photographers," Bell recalls with a laugh. "I actually asked somebody who they were there for, before I realized they were taking pictures of me."Horror has always been a tough genre for actors. Though the films traditionally do well at the box office, the actors' performances are not often singled out for praise. In the past, particularly in the 1970s, some actors saw their careers launched by scary movies: Think Amy Irving in "Carrie" and "The Fury,...

The Alamo Guide
for January 8th, 2010
Apologies for the late email this week. I was celebrating 2010 out of town, and then when I got home I was distracted by the intensity of the Texas vs. Alabama game. Bummerrrr. Oh well. We can all drown our sorrows in some Alamo fun this weekend! First of all, The Monster Squad screening was so popular that we added a second one later that night so there’s still a chance to see the Cast And Creators In Attendance! Youth In Revolt, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, and Crazy Heart all open up this weekend. Girlie Night presents Romy & Michele’S High School Reunion on Tuesday, so get your business women outfits ready (but please have your fake job description ready)! If you’re a foodie and love our Alamo feasts, The Alamo Iron Chef competition returns with a battle between Alamo kitchen and...
