Ridley Scott didn’t make “Napoleon” for history classes.
The director shrugged off criticisms over historical inaccuracies of the upcoming period piece starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French ruler during an interview with The New Yorker. The article cited TV historian Dan Snow’s viral TikTok that called out the locations and stylings shown in the film’s trailer, including having Napoleon Bonaparte show up in places he did not travel to in real life.
“Get a life,” Scott replied.
“Napoleon” looks at Napoleon’s origins and climb to power through the lens of his relationship with his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). The Apple epic aims to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, ambition, and strategy as a military leader and war visionary. The distributor doesn’t appear to be touting its historical accuracies.
The feature is set to have a four-and-a-half-hour director’s cut streaming on Apple TV+ in 2024.

From designer-turned-filmmaker and former creative director Tom Ford to the fashionable family themselves, many have weighed in on House of Gucci, Ridley Scott’s film based on author Sara Gay Forden’s book of the same name that chronicles the sensational murder-for-hire of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) by his ex-wife, Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and the glamorous world of the Italian luxury house. Released in November 2021, the MGM film also stars Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci and Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci. Salma Hayek and Jack Huston round out the cast. House of Gucci costume designer Janty Yates explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Italian movie star Gina Lollobrigida inspired Gaga’s onscreen wardrobe, while hairstylist Frederic Aspiras (who is also Gaga’s personal hairdresser and wig designer) revealed that he created more than 55 coifs for the Oscar-winning star’s character.

In Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci," Jared Leto plays Paolo Gucci, the son of Aldo Gucci and grandson of the Italian fashion house's founder Guccio Gucci. The actor's portrayal was met with polarizing reviews — some thought his character to be excellent comic relief; others thought his role came across as a joke that didn't deliver any laughs. While there are many things to say about Leto's accent, tonality, and acting in the film, if there's one thing all of us can agree on, it is that the actor is unrecognizable.

The Gucci family saga isn’t quite over.
Just months after the release of Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” — a film that could see Lady Gaga nominated for her second Oscar — a TV drama and documentary focusing on the Gucci family is in the works from Comcast-backed Sky Studios.
The company is in early stages of development on a high-end TV series, and is in pre-production on a documentary series, both of which will tell “the story of a great family and a great brand,” says producer Nils Hartmann, senior VP for Sky Studios Germany and Italy.
Both projects were brought roughly a year ago to Sky by Marco Belardi for Leone Film Group, which led to an agreement with several members of the Gucci family, including Alessandro Gucci, Guccio Gucci Jr. and Giorgio Gucci. Giorgio Gucci is a young Italian producer who will serve as executive producer on the still-untitled docuseries.

Lady Gaga has had three major acting roles. All have been anything but lighthearted material.
She first showed her dramatic chops as a vampire on “American Horror Story: Hotel” in 2015. Three years later, her big-screen debut in “A Star Is Born” earned her a best actress Oscar nomination for her work as Ally, a superstar singer married to a washed-up alcoholic musician (Bradley Cooper). Now, she’s back in the awards race in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” with her portrayal of Patrizia Gucci, who served 18 years in prison for plotting the murder of her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci (played by Adam Driver), heir to the Italian luxury fashion house.
Even Gaga thinks it may be time to switch things up. “I’d love to do a romantic comedy,” she tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast.

Ridley Scott is mincing no words on his no-apologies press tour for his latest period piece, “The Last Duel.” The 84-year-old director took a journalist to task in a junket video that’s gone viral on Twitter when the interviewer remarked that his new film is “more realistic” than Scott’s past period efforts like “Robin Hood” (2010) and “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005). The Oscar nominee’s response? “Go fuck yourself.” Check out the clip, which originated from a larger Russian video, below.
“It’s a very realistic film. It looks more realistic than ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ or ‘Robin Hood’ if you’re talking about —,” the interviewer said, before Scott cut him off, saying, “Sir, fuck you. Fuck you. Thank you very much. Fuck you. Go fuck yourself, sir. Go on.”
Scott has two movies out this year, with the “Rashomon”-like rape-revenge odyssey “The Last Duel” and his soapy fashion murder drama “House of Gucci.

The House of Gucci controversy continues... Just days after the highly anticipated crime drama hit movie theaters, the heirs of Aldo Gucci, who served as chairman of the Gucci fashion house, didn't mince words when slamming the on-screen portrayal of their famous family. "This is extremely painful from a human point of view," the family said in a statement. "And an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today." The movie, which premiered worldwide in theaters on Nov. 24, follows the real-life story of socialite Patrizia Reggiani (played by Lady Gaga), who served nearly 20 years in prison for hiring a hit man to murder her...

The Gucci family is not too happy with Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.” The heirs of Aldo Gucci put out a statement this week calling Scott’s film “an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.” Even before the film was released in theaters, Guccio Gucci’s great-grandchild Patrizia Gucci came forward to denounce the project on behalf of her family. Patrizia called out the casting of Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, saying, “My grandfather was a very handsome man, like all the Guccis, and very tall, blue eyes and very elegant. He is being played by Al Pacino, who is not very tall already, and this photo shows him as fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly. Shameful, because he doesn’t resemble him at all.”

Not everyone is going gaga over House of Gucci. Following the movie's highly anticipated release, the heirs of Aldo Gucci, who served as chairman of the Gucci fashion house for over 30 years (from 1953 to 1986), issued a statement slamming the portrayal of the family behind the iconic brand. "The production of the film did not bother to consult the heirs before describing Aldo Gucci—president of the company for 30 years [played by Al Pacino in the film]—and the members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them," the Nov. 29 statement read per Variety, adding that the movie has "a tone and an attitude to...

The Gucci family has hit back at Ridley Scott’s soapy murder saga “House of Gucci” in a scathing statement outlining why they are “a bit disconcerted” over what they believe to be inaccuracies in the movie. Tom Ford was a fast-rising designer in Milan in 1995, the year Maurizio Gucci was shot and killed in a hit job ordered by his estranged wife Patrizia. In Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” he’s played by Reeve Carney in a few scenes of the film, which of course meant Ford himself would inevitably watch. In a new essay for Air Mail, Ford aired out his grievances with the movie, which he felt missed the mark despite strong performances from Lady Gaga (as Patrizia) and Jeremy Irons.
“The shiny, ambitious, beautifully filmed and costumed tale of greed and murder is stunning by the sheer number of stars that have been cast. The movie rivals the nighttime soap ‘Dynasty’ for subtlety but does so with a much bigger budget,” Ford wrote. “Directed by master filmmaker Ridley Scott and starring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, and Salma Hayek,...

From the moment the “House of Gucci” trailer was released, Jared Leto’s transformation from svelte, long-haired actor to pudgy, balding fashion designer Paolo Gucci has been the talk of the film world.
Leto’s Paolo is the family black sheep — a dreamer with a vision that deviates from the fashion house’s tasteful colors and designs. Hours of makeup each day went into Leto’s look for the Ridley Scott movie, which hits theaters Nov. 24. The concept began with prosthetics designer Göran Lundström, who worked off a 3D scan without having met the actor. “I didn’t know his hair color, his hairline and skin tone,” explains Lundström, who had just three weeks to prepare.
Instead, Lundström relied on pictures and videos of Leto: “He had so much hair — thick hair and a low hairline.” The designer started piecing together a puzzle that included a three-piece bald cap that...

House Of Gucci is based on a true story, one filled with wealth, power, ambition, family, tradition, high fashion, and murder, a story that plays like Italian opera, equal parts tragedy and farce. Ridley Scott directs, and the lush production stars Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Jared Leto.
Filled with gorgeous period clothes and cars, lovely sets and locations, mostly in Milan, and fine photography, House Of Gucci delivers visual delights and jet-set style in this story that runs from the ’70s to the ’90s. Lady Gaga’s journey as an actress has been remarkable. Once the vamping vampire in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story—where she wasn’t asked to do much more than strut—she soon revealed herself to be genuinely effective in A Star Is Born. With palpable insecurity and a hell of a ballad written by Gaga herself, that character believably lived in the singer’s world if not her personal headspace. Now in House of Gucci, Gaga finds a real high note, announcing she’s a major thespian and feasting on a role so vain and consumed with avarice that it perhaps took a pop star to know you can never underplay it.
Gaga commands the screen of Ridley Scott’s second film in as many months so thoroughly that it might as well be taking place on a stage in Madison Square Garden. But as good as she...

Janty Yates‘ first film with Ridley Scott, 2000’s “Gladiator,” earned her an Oscar for Best Costume Design and she has been the director’s go-to costume designer since. However, it wasn’t Scott who introduced “House of Gucci” to Yates, but rather his wife, producer Giannina Scott, about 20 years ago.
“It certainly did the rounds, this movie, because Giannina would come on set and she’d be talking to Ridley about it and I’d go, ‘Don’t forget me! Don’t forget me!'” Yates tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Costume Design panel (watch above). “And then it would go away for a couple of years and it would come back and go around directors at Ridley Scott’s company. … Then it came back two years ago and I kept saying to Giannina, ‘Don’t forget about me!’ And they very kindly allowed me to have a go at it.

Kristen Stewart’s clear path to the Oscars 2022 Best Actress award hit a speed bump this week as the first reactions to Ridley Scott’s star-studded “House of Gucci” put Lady Gaga immediately in the awards conversation.
“There’s a true standout performance here from Lady Gaga, funny and fearless and — crucially, in a movie prone to losing the thread — completely commanding,” Vanity Fair awards writer David Canfield wrote in his analysis of the film, reviews for which are embargoed until November 23 — just one day before its theatrical release. “She centers, even grounds the movie while having a grand time doing so. Accordingly, she’s firmly in the conversation for a second best-actress nomination, but how far she can go largely depends on the movie around her.”

In building the backstabbing, outrageous, high-fashion world of “House of Gucci,” director Ridley Scott relied both on his own visual acuity and an openness to collaboration with his cast to bring the story of the murder of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) at the hands of a hitman hired by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga).
“The most important thing to do, apart from the script, is cast it well and learn to trust your actors’ intuition. You should be a partner with the actor in that process that allows his intuition or her intuition to kick in and help guide you,” Scott said during a post-screening Q&a last week at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, where he was joined by many members of his cast.

First reactions for Ridley Scott’s star-studded murder drama “House of Gucci” are trickling in following the movie’s official world premiere in London. The film is Scott’s second major release of 2021 following “The Last Duel,” which launched to strong reviews out of the Venice Film Festival but flopped at the box office. Will “House of Gucci” be a rebound for Scott? Based on the first reactions below, it appears the director has made a messy and soapy fashion epic that’s bound to be one of the buzziest films of the holiday movie season.

Three years after “A Star Is Born,” Lady Gaga is back in the Oscar race for her latest acting tour de force in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.” She stars as Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of orchestrating the killing of her ex-husband and ex-head of the Gucci fashion empire Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) in 1998, and served 16 years in prison. From the looks of this latest trailer from distributor MGM, Lady Gaga tears down the house in Scott’s soapy murder saga, and is gunning for that Best Actress statuette. Watch the new trailer below before the film arrives in theaters on November 24 via MGM distributing arm United Artists Releasing.

"You picked a real firecracker!" "She's a handful." MGM Studios has finally unveiled the first official trailer for House of Gucci, the other new Ridley Scott-direted movie arriving this year. He also directed The Last Duel, and they're both aiming for release this fall within months of each other. Set mostly in 1995, House of Gucci depicts the events and aftermath of the murder of Maurizio Gucci, Italian businessman and head of the fashion house Gucci, by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. The film stars Lady Gaga as Patrizia & Adam Driver as Maurizio, with Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci, Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo Gucci, Jack Huston, Camille Cottin, Reeve Carney as Tom Ford, plus Mădălina Diana Ghenea as Sophia Loren and Salma Hayek as Giuseppina "Pina" Auriemma. A very talented ensemble cast! And Leto is unrecognizable as Paolo. This looks damn good, as expected from Ridley Scott.

It makes perfect sense that Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci,” based on the book “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed,” should create a frenzy for costume designs, courtesy of Scott’s go-to designer, Oscar winner Janty Yates.
When Lady Gaga posted the first official look at the film from Italy, where the drama is shooting, sharing an on-set Instagram photo of herself with co-star Adam Driver, the internet almost broke. Driver plays Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of the house’s founder, Guccio Gucci. Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, his wife, who was convicted of orchestrating his murder by a hitman in 1995. Captioned “Signore e Signora Gucci,” the photo became a sensation for the couple’s vintage 1980s-era fashions, as well as Driver’s Aran cream-colored cable-knit sweater.
It only helps that Gucci has given the production unlimited access to the fashion house’s vintage archives,...

Ridley Scott has two movies coming down the pike with “The Last Duel” (October 15) and “House of Gucci” (November 24). Both star Adam Driver, with the former centering around best friends facing off over a horrifying crime in 14th-century France, and the latter about the story of Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), as she is tried and convicted of orchestrating the assassination of her ex-husband and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci (Driver).
Scott’s cinematographer Dariusz Wolski recently sat down with The Film Stage to tease the upcoming movies. Of “House of Gucci” he said, “This film, because it’s high fashion ’80s and ’90s, it’s going to be a little different. I’m still trying to find a look for it. The ‘80s weren’t a particularly good-looking period. The fashion world or these fashion shows, they were not that great looking. You look at the...

Patrizia Reggiani, the former Gucci heiress who was convicted of ordering former husband Maurizio Gucci’s murder, is calling out Lady Gaga, who is starring as Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie “House of Gucci.” A first photo of Gaga as Reggiani and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci debuted this week to explosive fanfare from moviegoers, but the real Reggiani says she’s “rather annoyed” that Gaga never contacted her or met her prior to filming “House of Gucci.”
“I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me,” Reggiani told Italian news agency Ansa (via The Independent). “It is not an economic question. I won’t get a cent from the film. It is a question of good sense and respect.”

The upcoming crime drama House of Gucci dives into a tale of murder and scandal surrounding Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the famed fashion house. Thanks to one of its stars, Lady Gaga, we have a first look at filming for the movie, as she and costar Adam Driver (who plays Gucci) pose in '80s-esque glam winter wear.
If the photo really is depicting the Guccis during the early 1980s, it seems almost certain that the movie will cover the intrafamily feuds that dominated the Gucci family and business during that time. According to the New York Post, in 1981, cousins Maurizio and Paolo Gucci were feuding over the future of the company, with nasty results. At first, Paolo wanted to start his own line, so his father, Aldo Gucci, fired him; Paolo then launched several lawsuits and threatened to tip off the IRS about his father's tax evasion.
