One week ago was the second anniversary of the end of Killing Eve after four seasons. But as great as the show was, with no small amount of fascinating murderous dynamics between the leads, many of us were incredibly disappointed by the finale.
After all, not only did the writers utilize the generally despised 'bury your gays' trope by ruining one of the most vibrant, albeit insane queer couples on TV, but they also killed off one of the best characters ever created, the psychopathic but lovable assassin Villanelle.
Villanelle is a great character in her own right, thanks to the writing prowess of Luke Jennings, but she wouldn't be as well known and loved if it weren't for the performance of the great Jodie Comer on the show. The actress has come a long way from British soap operas to one of the best projects in television history, from...

Welp, apparently the Emmys hate Westerns.
The stunning lack of nominations for the popular and acclaimed series “Yellowstone” and “1883” were far from the only surprises in Tuesday morning’s Emmy nominations announcement, of course. Between the return of Emmy juggernaut “Succession” and the lack of previous winners like “The Crown” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” this year’s race was already primed for some unexpected nominations — and some surprising omissions.
Two shows weren’t overlooked, however: Season 3 of “Sex Education” and the inaugural season of “Heartstopper.” While both series earned wide acclaim and major buzz, Netflix elected not to submit either for Primetime Emmy consideration, given the steep competition they were respectively facing in the comedy and drama categories. Instead, “Sex Education” is being submitted for the upcoming International Emmys, and “Heartstopper” will vie for recognition in the Children’s & Family Emmys.

After the “Killing Eve” finale slaughtered fan expectations and received critical backlash, lead star Sandra Oh is setting the record straight on the ill-fated lesbian love story ending.
Spoilers: Mere hours after sharing their first kiss, assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) is shot and killed as she and MI5 agent Eve (Oh) try to escape through a river in the final episode, which aired April 10.
“Honestly, it was going to be the other way around,” Oh revealed in a Deadline video.
Oh recalled discussing how the series should wrap with Season 4 lead writer Laura Neal, who previously explained just how important the final moments were to signify Eve’s “rebirth” away from Villanelle.
Oh said she told Neal that Eve should die instead of Villanelle: “I was like, ‘You should kill my character,'” Oh said. “I thought that would be the strongest and the most interesting [ending] and I felt, emotionally,...

Killing Eve, you’ve got some explaining to do. Author Luke Jennings has chimed in with his opinion about the finale, which aired Sunday, April 10 on BBC America, and he didn’t mince words. Jodie Comer‘s Villanelle is shot dead in the last moments of the Killing Eve series finale, after much of the episode was dedicated to showing her and Sandra Oh‘s Eve’s acceptance of their feelings for each other. Fans got to see the women acting like a normal couple for what ended up being fleeting moments, including a tension-breaking, cathartic kiss that’d been brewing for four seasons, just for the psychopath assassin to be killed in the very last moments. It’s an unfortunate addition to the “bury your gays” trope, where Lgbtqia+ characters — frequently queer women — are robbed of having happily ever afters. Jennings wrote the book series on which Killing Eve is based,...

Spoiler Alert: This story includes details from the series finale of BBC America’s Killing Eve.
Television finales are an incredibly tough beast – just ask the team behind The Sopranos or Lost.
The finale of BBC America’s Killing Eve has also received its share of criticism from fans, disappointed with the way the series played out in its finale episode that aired earlier this month, during which Villanelle is gunned down and killed.
However, the author of the original material, Luke Jennings, has hoped to assuage fans’ unhappiness by declaring that “Villanelle lives,” at least on paper.
“I learned the outcome of the final episode in advance, and suspected, rightly, that fans would be upset. But to those fans, I would say this: Villanelle lives. And on the page, if not on the screen, she will be back,” he wrote in the Guardian.

If you weren’t happy with the way Killing Eve ended, you’re not alone: Even the man who originally created the characters of Eve and Villanelle agrees.

Luke Jennings, who authored the books the BBC America/AMC series “Killing Eve” is based on, wrote in The Guardian on Friday that he is less than pleased with how the April 10 series finale played out, saying the final episode took him “aback” and lamenting that it was “bowing to convention.”
Spoilers for the series finale:
Everything appears to be ending on a high note as Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and Eve (Sandra Oh) finally share a real kiss — until the final moments when Villanelle is gunned down and killed, with Eve left screaming.
Jennings notes that he was advised of the decision to kill off the colorful assassin ahead of time, and knew fans would be upset, particularly since TV shows kill off their LGBTQ characters so frequently that it’s become a well-known trope.
“A truly subversive storyline would have defied the trope which sees same-sex lovers in TV...

The divisive “Killing Eve” series finale even shocked author Luke Jennings, whose “Codename Villanelle” trilogy inspired the BBC America and AMC+ series.
The critically-acclaimed spy thriller stars Sandra Oh as MI5 agent Eve who is caught in an erotic cat-and-mouse game with assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Yet after four seasons of “will they, won’t they” tension, the last episode of the series, which aired April 10, offered a fatal finale to the would-be love story. Spoilers: Mere hours after sharing their first kiss, Villanelle is shot and killed as she and Eve try to escape through a river.
Fans took to social media to voice their disdain at the shocking finale, and Vanity Fair ran an article arguing “Killing Eve” ultimately bent to the “bury your gays” trope. Why couldn’t Villanelle and Eve finally just be happy in a relationship together?

“Killing Eve” kicked off season 3 in typically deadly fashion, with a suitably tragic character death.
Ratings-wise, the episode was watched by 1.1 million total viewers across both AMC and BBC America, which is down only a fraction on the season 2 premiere’s tally of 1.2 million, still the series high to date. However, that figure is still 4% higher than the season 2 Live+Same Day total viewership average.
In terms of the demographic breakdown, the premiere scored 424,000 total viewers among adults 25-54 and 330,000 among adults 18-49. The former numbers is down a little from the season 2 premiere (but up 33% from the finale and 8% from the season 2 average), while the latter is up a minute amount on last season’s debut (and also better than the season 2 finale by almost 30% and the season 2 average by 12%).

Great news “Killing Eve” fans, AMC has announced it is moving up the season 3 premiere by two weeks.

AMC, for instance, was forced to suspend production on both “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” meaning a substantial zombie-shaped hole will likely need to be filled in the network’s schedule.

Laura Neal has been tapped as the next lead writer on BBC America’s critically acclaimed and award-winning series Killing Eve, from Sid Gentle Films. Neal will work on the upcoming season 4. BBC America handed the series an early season 4 renewal last month, well ahead of its season 3 April 26 premiere on Bbca and AMC. Season four of Killing Eve will go into production later this year.
“Killing Eve smashes television tropes in every way, both on the screen and behind it,” said Sarah Barnett, President, AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “We have a remarkable squad of ferociously smart women writers passing the baton to each other on this show, aligned around a coherent vision but bringing it to life with their own specific sparkle and brilliance. BBC America will premiere the third season of its acclaimed drama series Killing Eve on Sunday, April 26 at 10 Pm. Killing Eve, which has already been renewed for a fourth season, continues to grow in ratings. Season two had the highest rate of growth of any returning TV drama since the final season of AMC’s Breaking Bad in 2013, doubling its season one audience in Live+Sd, according to Nielsen stats.
The third season continues the story of two women with brutal pasts, addicted to each other but now trying desperately to live their lives without their drug of choice. For Villanelle (Comer), the assassin without a job, Eve (Oh) is dead. For Eve, the ex-MI6 operative hiding in plain sight,...

The USC Libraries Scripter Awards honor the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
While Netflix dominated this year’s nominations with three adapted scripts, for movies “The Irishman” (Steve Zaillian adapted Charles Brandt’s “I Heard You Paint Houses”) and “The Two Popes” (Anthony McCarten adapted his own play), and Susannah Grant, Michael Chabon, and Ayelet Waldman’s limited series “Unbelievable,” the winners were Amazon’s “Fleabag” (play and series author Phoebe Waller-Bridge was in London), and Sony’s “Little Women,” whose scribe Greta Gerwig gave a heartfelt speech. This could presage another win at the WGA Awards next week and on Oscar night in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Greta Gerwig’s script for “Little Women” has won the USC Libraries Scripter Award for best movie adaptation and “Fleabag” has taken the television award.
The winners were announced Saturday night at USC’s Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library.
“Little Women” topped “Dark Waters,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “The Two Popes.” All but environmental drama “Dark Waters” are contending for the Academy Award in the adapted screenplay category.
Gerwig, who also directed, won the Scritper award in conjunction with Louisa May Alcott, author of the iconic 1868 novel about the lives of the four March sisters in a small New England town during the 1860s.
“This is extraordinary. I am very honored. I didn’t attend USC, but I truly love this library,” Gerwig said. “‘Little Women’ is the book of my life. I can’t recall a time when I didn’t know who the March sisters were.

BBC America is going ahead with a fourth season order for acclaimed crime drama Killing Eve while we wait for its third.
Killing Eve Season 4 is officially happening!
Oh, don’t worry, you didn’t miss Season 3. That’s still set to premiere on BBC America sometime this spring. However, the irreverently twisted crime series – a cross-continental offering that airs on BBC America and AMC in the U.S. – has nevertheless scored a preemptive fourth season renewal, buttressed by the supreme confidence of the network, and the array of mainstream accolades accrued last year, notably an “Outstanding Lead Actress” Primetime Emmy win for co-star Jodie Comer (highlighting the other eight nominations), as well as a "Best Actress in a Television Series" Golden Globe win for co-star Sandra Oh.

The USC Libraries has revealed the finalists for the 32nd-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. Last year’s Scripter winners were the exception that prove the rule: “Leave No Trace” screenwriters Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini were not nominated for the Oscar; they adapted Peter Rock, author of “My Abandonment.”
The year before was more typical, as the Scripter Award went to “Call Me by Your Name” screenwriter James Ivory (who won the Oscar), and author André Aciman; past winners include “Moonlight,” “The Big Short,” and “The Imitation Game,” which all won Oscars. In fact, before 2019 eight Scripter Award winners went on to win Oscars.

“Dark Waters,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Little Women” and “The Two Popes” have been nominated as the best film adaptations of 2019 by the USC Libraries Script Awards, which were announced on Wednesday morning.
The Scripter Award celebrates both the screenwriters of film and television adaptations and the original authors of the material on which they are based – which means that the nomination for “Little Women,” example, goes both to writer-director Greta Gerwig and to 19th-century novelist Louisa May Alcott, who wrote the 1868 novel on which the film is based.
“The Two Popes” is the only nominee in which the screenwriter and original author are the same person, with Anthony McCarten adapting his play “The Pope.” His script was judged to be an original screenplay rather than an adaptation by the Writers Guild of America, but the Academy classifies it as an adaptation for Oscar contention, and the Scripters agreed.

Jodie Comer is remarkably close with her family — which is why, ironically, the “Killing Eve” star didn’t bother to invite them to the Emmys this past weekend.
It’s not that she didn’t want them to fly in from Liverpool and be there to cheer her on. But Comer had no expectation of winning the bloody trophy and didn’t want them to be disappointed.
“It’s nice to bring your parents to these things,” she says. “But I just said, ‘Oh no, sit this one out. Now’s not my time.’ I’m probably not going to ever live that one down with them, or they’ll be coming to every single thing now!”

Villanelle got the better of Eve Polastri as Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer nabbed the lead actress in a drama series award over her co-star Sandra Oh.
Comer, who plays elegant and talented killer Villanelle, beat her co-star Oh, who plays Polastri, the British spy searching for Villanelle, in the BBC America drama.
This comes after Oh was pipped to the crown by Claire Foy at last year’s award, meaning that the former Greys Anatomy star is still waiting for her first win.
It is Comer’s second major award of the year – after scoring the BAFTA – and on her debut Emmy nomination.
In addition to beating Oh, who was widely considered the favorite in the category, Comer beat Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, Ozark’s Laura Linney, House of Cards’ Robin Wright, This Is Us’ Mandy Moore and How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis.

“Game of Thrones” has already won more Emmy Awards (47 to be exact) than any other primetime series in TV history, and that number is expected to increase for its final season. According to Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets, one of the trophies HBO’s fantasy epic is predicted to take home on Sept. 22 is Best Drama Series. It’s already won this top category three times, so another victory would tie it with fellow four-timers and record-holders “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. Law”, “The West Wing” (2000-03) and “Mad Men” (2008-11).

The third season of “Killing Eve” has begun production and added Harriet Walter and Danny Sapani to its cast, BBC America revealed Monday.
As fans of the Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer-led drama will remember, Season 2 left off with a cliffhanger, as Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) seemingly betrayed Eve (Oh) before Villanelle (Comer) shot Eve, leaving her for dead in Rome.
Walter is known for her role as Caroline Collingwood on HBO’s “Succession,” who is the second wife of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) and mother for Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Kendall (Jeremy Strong). She also played Clemmie Churchill on the first season of Netflix’s “The Crown. Sapani played Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah on the second season of that series.

This is what we call a landslide. All of Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts are confident “Game of Thrones” is about to tie the four-time record for Best Drama Series that’s currently held by “Hill Street Blues” (1981-84), “L.A. That’s right — there’s not a single outlier in the bunch that thinks anything else can prevail on September 22, but there’s slightly good news for BBC America’s “Killing Eve” as that has the most #2 votes from our pundits.

Twenty years ago, David E. Kelley made Emmy history as the first producer to win Best Drama Series (“The Practice”) and Best Comedy Series (“Ally McBeal”) in the same year. No one has duplicated the feat since, but someone has the chance to do so this year: Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The TV academy released the official vetted list of producer nominees for program races on Monday, and as expected, Waller-Bridge is up in Best Comedy Series for “Fleabag” and in Best Drama Series for “Killing Eve.” Could she actually win both? Well…

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Killing Eve” Season 2, Episode 3, “The Hungry Caterpillar.”]
On “Killing Eve,” certain people just cannot resist the strange allure of Villanelle (Jodie Comer), and now that her handler Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) came back from the dead in the last episode, he wastes little time in reuniting with his former assassin partner. In an interview with IndieWire upon his resurrection, Bodnia revealed that he was never sure of his character’s status because Konstanin dies much earlier in the Luke Jennings novels on which “Killing Eve” is based.
“Konstantin should have been dead in Episode 5 or 6 or something like that. Really dead. No question about it,” he said. “And so I was so surprised when I got the script we were shooting and that kept changing. I was in [Episode] 7 and 8 and, eventually, shot in the stomach.”
Even then, Bodnia held out hope that somehow Konstantin survived and would return for Season 2. “BBC America...

Saving the world is serious business, and so is finding the right balance of James Bond badassery and insouciance. As such, the confirmation that Phoebe Waller-Bridge has been hired onto the upcoming “Bond 25” to help polish the script bodes well for the franchise. Ever since the 1960s when “Dr. No” became the first big-screen adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 007 novels, Bond has continued to stay relevant by continuing to update and reinvent itself for every generation.
Enter Waller-Bridge, who’s made a name for herself by creating BBC America’s spy thriller “Killing Eve” and the dramedy “Fleabag” on Amazon. The British actress, writer, playwright, and director may not seem like the most obvious choice to tweak the most masculine of franchises, but her voice and sensibilities actually make her uniquely qualified to give it the punch up it needs. ‘Killing Eve’ and ‘Fleabag’ creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has jumped on board the good-ship ‘Bond’ to give the script an injection of life.
At the request of Daniel Craig who thought the script needed to “introduce more humour and the offbeat style of writing she is best known for”, Waller-Bridge has been brought onto the project before the main shoot is due to begin, which is imminent. Some scenes have already begun filming in Norway but rumour has it that the script hasn’t actually been finished, hence the delay in getting the main shoot off the ground.
Cary Fukunaga is directing the film which has a current working title of ‘Shutterhand’. Ben Whishaw, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Lea Seydoux are expected to return to their roles. Rami Malek has been rumoured to be playing the villain. At one stage Barbara Broccoli and director Cary Fukunaga were keen to get...
