“Ultimately, this is a mystery show, grounded on characters in a world that we could believe in,” declares “Silo” creator and showrunner Graham Yost. For our recent webchat he adds, “What is real and what isn’t? Who controls the knowledge? And then the big thing for me is, why is this happening? Why are they living underground? That kept me going through the three books,” he says, adding with a knowing smile, “buy the books, but don’t read them until the entire television series is over, because we’re going to veer in some ways and stay close in others. But mostly we want to get the fun of revealing the answers to the mysteries!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“If you see the opening title, you see just echoes of people,” explains Morten Tyldum about the mystery that imbues every level of the behemoth silo structure that sustains thousands of human beings in a post-apocalyptic world. For our recent webchat he adds, “you see these are ghostly people walking around, and that is the idea that humanity doesn’t really matter, it is the silo that endures.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Updated with video: Before VFX supervisor Daniel Rauchwerger began his work on Apple TV+’s Silo, he was told the actual silo should be treated like a character — not a massive structure where 10,000 people are forced to live.
“The design was one open space, so very quickly, we treated it as one room,” Rauchwerger, whose credits include Inception and John Carter, said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen event. “Every time you look up, down and sideways, you see the next room. One of the main things that became a challenge was bringing all those people to life, just living their lives.”
Based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of dystopian novels, Silo is the story of the last 10,000 people on Earth, whose mile-deep home protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built, and any who try to find out face fatal consequences.

Plot: Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Review: Post-apocalyptics stories are bordering on burnout. After decades of zombies and plagues and reaching for creative twists on the genre, we are getting to the point of animal-human hybrids (Sweet Tooth), blind tribes (See), and even deadly fungus spores (The Last of Us). While the creativity in those aforementioned series is impressive, the genre seems to be petering out.

Rebecca Ferguson stars in Apple TV+’s ‘Silo’
The world inhabited by the characters in Apple TV+’s Silo is claustrophobic, devoid of vibrant colors, and incredibly bleak. Based on Hugh Howey’s book series, Silo’s dystopian future finds humans forced to live underground to survive. The surface world is uninhabitable, and the thousands who call the vast underground silo home have learned to adapt to their confinement and exist peacefully in this insulated environment.
Episode one sets up the rules the citizens must abide by, including restrictions on pregnancies. Possessing items from the past (historical artifacts) is strictly forbidden, and what information exists about the history of the silo is kept under lock and key. Punishment is swift and severe for anyone who disobeys the rules. Yet some members of this confined society are quietly skeptical about the limited information they’re being fed.

There’s a new sheriff in town, but it’s multiple hours of Apple TV+’s Silo before she takes office. Before that, not one but two of the sci-fi show’s 10 episodes explore the legacy of Juliette Nichols’s (Rebecca Ferguson) beloved predecessor, Holston Beckett (David Oyelowo), and the nature of the underground shelter they call home. Such is the time deemed necessary to acclimate viewers to the inner workings of this world, a vertical concrete structure housing 10,000 people who have no knowledge of what’s going on above beyond what they see of the ravaged, toxic landscape projected onto window-like screens throughout the silo.
Showrunner Graham Yost greatly overestimates the depth of this paint-by-numbers sci-fi dystopia, adapted from Hugh Howey’s book series. The people of this society have lived underground long enough to develop new customs and terminology, but little of it deviates from the trappings of...

It’s a rite of passage for actors, especially of a certain age, to play an addict. Drugs, alcohol, pills, anything you might chug or snort or shoot in an unhealthy, pain-numbing fashion — the specific substance or substances they’re abusing will vary. But for stage and screen performers (especially screen performers), it’s a challenge that allows them to play the emotional scales: anger, sadness, buzzed-out bliss, sickness, health, self-pity, self-acceptance, and/or self-destruction. Do it well, and you can plumb the depths of the human soul. Do it really well,...

In the new film "A Good Person," Florence Pugh plays Allison, a young woman whose life is derailed when she is involved in a fatal car accident with her soon-to-be sister-in-law. She spirals into an addiction to oxycontin, and while in recovery, she begins to write songs. Pugh performs them herself in the film, something that, as it turns out, the actor has a history with.
"A Good Person" is written, directed, and produced by Zach Braff, who wrote the role specifically for Pugh, who stars alongside Morgan Freeman, Molly Shannon, Chinaza Uche, and Celeste O'Connor. /Film's own Ethan Anderton recently got a chance to speak to Braff about "A Good Person," and asked him whether or not he worked with Pugh on the lyrics and development of the original songs.

Plot: Allison (Florence Pugh) seems to have everything going for her. She has a well-paying job as a pharma-rep, is on a clear, upwardly mobile path and is newly engaged to a fiancee (Chinaza Uche) she adores. But, a split-second error leads to the deaths of her future sister and brother-in-law, leaving her permanently estranged from her now ex-fiancee and with a crippling opioid addiction to boot. When she manages to drag herself to an AA meeting, she makes an unlikely connection with her ex’s father (Morgan Freeman), himself a recovering addict who can’t help but blame Allison for the death of his daughter.
Review: Zach Braff has become an easy target for critics recently, and I don’t understand why. In 2004 everyone thought he was a genius when Garden State became a cult sensation. However, in the years that followed, the film was suddenly retroactively condemned as cheese.

It’s been a hot minute, Mr. Braff, but we’re thankful that you have returned. Well, he hadn’t gone very far, of course, but A Good Person feels like a return of sorts, a re-emergence of a filmmaker who has struggled to get his films off the ground for a cavalcade of reasons. 2004’s Garden State, his debut feature which wowed audiences both at Sundance and then in cinemas, earning him a Grammy win for its sensational soundtrack. Then, not much.
Not for the want of trying, mind you, with countless directorial opportunities falling, followed by his eventual exploration and success with Kickstarter and the film born from it, 2014’s Wish I Was Here, which had a mixed reception, and taking on a studio comedy with Going In Style in 2017. Interested in what A Good Person might suggest about Florence Pugh’s past relationship with its writer and director Zach Braff? You won’t find many bones to gnaw on here. Their personal lives – they were a couple between 2019 and 2022 – are relevant only to the extent that Braff wrote his script with Pugh in mind. And as someone who knows what she’s capable of, he happily lets the film act as her own personal awards reel. You could count on one hand the number of scenes where the actor, playing an opioid addict enmeshed in guilt, isn’t screaming or crying.
A Good Person is also fuelled by Braff’s own emotions – he wrote its script after a period of profound grief, in which he lost his father, sister, and best friend in a short span of time. Yet as unimpeachable as his motivations may be, and as unvarnished as his work may feel,...

A wily old pro teams up with one of the most exciting young actresses of the day in the emotionally loaded drama A Good Person. Zach Braff’s latest feature excels at taking the measure of how people cope with personal tragedy and does so in a vital and engaging way that’s far more invigorating than depressing. Braff essentially makes one feature film every 10 years (Garden State and Wish I Was Here came before), and while he otherwise busies himself with music, television and other pursuits, his talent is such that you’d like to see him wade more frequently and deeper into film work than he so far has.
This may be melodrama, but it’s melodrama of a pretty high order, one that benefits from a first-rate cast led by Florence Pugh and Morgan Freema and shifts tones and moods that startle with their bluntness and honesty.

At this point, the dulcet rumble of Morgan Freeman’s omniscient voiceover could almost qualify as its own genre. The legendary actor lends his considerable gravitas to the opening screed of “A Good Person,” another New Jersey-set drama from “Garden State” writer/director Zach Braff.
The film opens with an obvious metaphor about model trains that is very quickly hammered into the ground, along with a few too many other themes and plot lines. With model trains, you see, one can construct “a world where the hobbyist plays omnipotent creator,” says Freeman, before sealing it with the winking clincher: “In life, of course, nothing is nearly as neat and tidy.”
The film centers on 26-year-old Allison, or Ali, played with unrestrained bravery by Florence Pugh, who finds herself stuck in the throes of opioid addiction after surviving a fatal car crash in which she was the driver. Ali had a...

We all contain multitudes. We can be good people who do bad things. And when we are pummeled by something sudden and horrific, the struggle to continue on after that trauma and grief can break us down if we don't have support, and sometimes even if we do. That's the premise of Zach Braff's "A Good Person," a film where the writer-director tackles a slew of difficult and complex issues, from grief to drug and alcohol addiction, to teenage sex and the difficulty of forgiving yourself or others.
The story centers on Allison (Florence Pugh), a woman whose life shatters after she survives a car crash that causes the deaths of her future sister-and-law and her sister-in-law's husband. After spending the first part of the movie establishing how happy and healthy everyone is before the accident, "A Good Person" jumps forward to one year later, when Allison and her...

The drama of addiction and recovery, as it takes place in the movies, tends to come at us like a series of rituals. There’s the rule-by-rule, day-by-day protocol of 12-step programs; a lot of us may feel we know it well from movies, even if we’ve never personally undergone the experience. There are the deeply engraved patterns of addiction itself: the highs, the lows, the cravings, the exploitation of friends and family members, the descent to the bottom, the grasping for the drink or the pill or the fix (or the one that isn’t there) and, in some cases, the criminal behavior. The reaching out to save oneself is also a kind of ritual — one that some addicts would say God built into us.
The ritual, in the case of this subject, extends to the audience. We live in a profoundly addictive society; whether or not you,...

The much-documented and discussed real-life romantic relationship between Zach Braff and Florence Pugh may not have lasted, but the writer-director has provided the actress a sterling opportunity to showcase her talents with his latest directorial effort. Pugh delivers a superb starring performance that serves to accentuate her growing artistic stature and co-star Morgan Freeman turns in his best work in years after appearing in far too many sub-par vehicles. Their efforts lift A Good Person, which otherwise too often feels familiar in its themes and self-conscious in its melodramatic plot contrivances.

For better or worse, 2022 has been the year of Florence Pugh.
“Don’t Worry Darling” reached a level of pop culture relevance that most arthouse films can only dream of, with film festival attendees and celebrity gossip addicts hanging on every detail of the rumored feud between Pugh and her director and co-star Olivia Wilde. But while the film’s reviews were mixed, nobody denied that Pugh gave a phenomenal performance in the lead role. Captivating industry observers while having the acting chops to justify the attention is the stuff that movie stars are made of.
Pugh won’t be leaving the limelight any time soon, as her upcoming film slate leaves her well positioned to capitalize on her current momentum. She’s currently working with directors ranging from Christopher Nolan to Denis Villeneuve, and will be seen everywhere from indie dramas to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Florence Pugh has a checklist when choosing roles: they must be intense, and the character must cry…a lot.
“It’s no secret that I only pick very intense roles,” Pugh said during the premiere of Zach Braff’s “A Good Person,” in which she plays an opioid addict grappling with grief following a fatal car accident (via Variety). “This isn’t the first time I’ve been reduced to tears pretty much every single scene that I’ve been in. I like finding the ugliness in humans. I love being raw. I love being given a script where it challenges myself and I have never picked a role unless I’ve been scared of it.”
Pugh added of writer-director Braff, with whom she was romantically involved with for years leading up to the film, “And this is someone that knew me, knew my potential and wanted to work with me.
