This month, FX aired something insane and magic and impossible to describe. It came courtesy of a show you are likely not watching – unless you’re a diehard fan of Denis Leary and/or single-camera comedies about rock music. Denis Leary discussed at today’s Television Critics Association press tour how his FX series Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll will wrap up its second season this summer. As Johnny Rock, the lead singer of The Heathens, there was always a plan for the band to come apart. “The second half of season two is where everything falls apart. The last four episodes, there’s a lot of things that tumble down.” A clip of a hysterical, drag-out fight scene with the band was shown prior to the…...

The second season of Julie Klausner's blisteringly funny sitcom Difficult People is now in full swing on Hulu, in which Klausner and partner-in-crime Billy Eichner portray lightly fictionalized versions of themselves as they struggle to land a date, a showbiz connection, or just a quick payday. The show follows Denis Leary as washed-up rocker Johnny Rock, who’s asked by the daughter he never knew he had (Gillies) to make her famous. When you think Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll frontman Johnny Rock, think Mick Jagger without the mindbending fame. Bono without the gravitas. Steven Tyler without the scarves. David Bowie without the longevity.

Denis Leary’s relationship with FX continues with the debut of his new show “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.” While the show rehashes a lot of familiar tropes about all three titular topics, it also deals with the ideas of reinvention, second chances and living vicariously through your children. Once in a while, a show comes a long that blows you away, but is unfortunately difficult to describe. It isn’t that it’s taxing to try to convey what you appreciate about the effort, but that it’s actually hard to describe the show itself.
That may be a surprising statement, given that Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll has an official synopsis, was pitched, and has been and will be described countless times.
Sure, Denis Leary plays an aging rocker who never made it, and the series begins with him finding the daughter he never knew he had. The pull is that she sought him out so that he would write songs for her, because she wants to be famous, and he can’t afford to turn her down. Hilarity ensues.

Nearly four years after wrapping his acclaimed firefighting drama Rescue Me, Denis Leary is back on FX in a much different role. On the comedy Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll he plays Johnny Rock, a washed-up, substance-abusing singer whose heralded '90s band broke up the day of their debut album's release. Thanks to the sudden appearance of a daughter he never knew he had, Johnny tries to get the band back together, and things unfold from there. Featuring cameos by Dave Grohl, Joan Jett, and the Afghan Whigs' Greg Dulli, as well as live performances by Leary and his co-stars, the show mines some great, true stories from rock-and-roll history and shows how dysfunctional even the not-so-famous bands can be. Vulture caught up with the 57-year-old Leary to talk about his egomaniacal character, the dangers of acting like a rock star, and how he and Jon Stewart have been fighting...

The hedonistic comedy "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll," created by Denis Leary, features Leary at his most Leary-ish; a leather pants-wearing ego monster coasting on the vague idea of what a "rock star" is. Johnny Rock's been living something approximating the dream for over 20 years, and it's gotten him nowhere. But his heretofore-unknown daughter Gigi (Elizabeth Gilles) might be the one to change that for him. Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is superficial title for a superficial show. Created by Denis Leary, this half-hour FX comedy, which premieres tonight, follows Johnny Rock (Leary), the lead singer of the Heathens. The band apparently flamed out in the '90s — or was it the '80s, or the '70s? It's often hard to tell — when they were right on the cusp of stardom. In the present, Johnny learns that he has an adult daughter, Gigi (Elizabeth Gilles), by a former bandmate, and that Gigi can really, really sing; this inspires him to try to get the band back together to write some new material and finally claim the megastardom that he believes was their destiny. So he reassembles Flash (John Corbett), bassist Rehab (John Ales), drummer Bam Bam (Robert Kelly), and one of his old backup singers Ava (Elaine Hendrix), who happens to be his girlfriend of 25 years,...

Questions I have after watching two episodes of "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll," the new FX comedy created by and starring Denis Leary, which debuts tomorrow night at 10: In what year does this show think it takes place? Leary plays Johnny Rock, former lead singer of The Heathens, a band that had a meteoric rise and abrupt fall in the early '90s. Dave Grohl appears early in the pilot to explain that The Heathens were a huge inspiration for Nirvana. But Johnny, in both past and present, sports a rooster haircut that hasn't been fashionable since Rod Stewart and Ron Wood abandoned it in the mid-'70s. The Heathens' signature song, which provides the show its title (albeit one borrowed from a much better song — also from the '70s — by Ian Dury) is catchy, but sounds like a mix of punk and glam rock that had little place...

"Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll" may be brand new, but it shows its age from the outset. In the series premiere of FX's single-camera comedy, washed-up musician Johnny Rock (writer/creator Denis Leary), dissolute frontman of the fictional '90s supernova The Heathens, rages against creatively bankrupt tribute bands and reality TV stars with a curmudgeon's confidence. "I'll suck Bruce Jenner's cock right here," he pledges in one ill-timed scene, desperate for the paparazzi's attention. "That's if he still has one." Though surely written before Caitlyn Jenner's Internet-breaking Vanity Fair cover, the line is of a piece with the series' uncomfortable relationship to our pop cultural moment, portraying Johnny as both miser and sage. He may be right, when he bumps into his estranged daughter, Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies), on a New York sidewalk, to see something distinctive in the stars of the past, but "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll" stacks the.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is pretty damning evidence that the narcissist is killing television. From the bizarrely popular Two and a Half Men to the thankfully short-lived Weird Loners, there seems to be a constant flow of unlikable, self-absorbed assholes leading half-hour comedies, with show creators across all networks seemingly convinced that the most endearing trait a sitcom character can possess is consummate unpleasantness (yes, HBO, you too, don’t think for a second that Girls is growing on us). FX’s latest is the natural end-point of this unfortunate small-screen phenomenon: a series populated entirely by painfully unlikeable people, and that’s (funnily enough) painfully unlikeable itself.

Two weeks ago, it looks like "Survivor: San Juan Del Sur" was coming down to a pair of solid alliances, one masterminded by Josh Canfield and the other led by Jeremy Collins. While "Survivor" history has taught us that we should never expect alliance leaders to run the table, we've only occasionally seen two post-Merge alliances so swiftly stripped of their leaders. First, Jeremy seemed like he was heading toward elimination, but he won Individual Immunity and was able to steer power duo Jon & Jaclyn against Josh, seemingly leaving that alliance in a weak minority position. But the following week, after Jeremy pushed Jon a bit too hard to reveal his Hidden Immunity Idol, the former college football player decided that the need to get rid of Jeremy had gone from "eventually" to "immediately." Viewers saw Jon make his pitch to Jeremy's ally Missy and saw her hesitation. We...

Denis Leary’s upcoming comedy show, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, has been ordered to series by FX, with 10 episodes now in the pipeline. The show sets up his character as someone who, back in the early 1990s, led a band called The Heathens to the height of the New York rock scene. He was headed for greatness, along with best friend and lead guitarist Flash (John Corbett), until he precipitated their downfall with his predilection for drugs, alcohol and the wives of his friends. We learn that the band released one record and broke up on the same day. Two decades later, Johnny has reunion on his mind.

Fans of Rescue Me, and/or Denis Leary, have something to be happy about as FX orders a new series, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, from the comedian.
This one is quite a different effort from the surprisingly dramatic Rescue Me, but looks as though it is going to mix a lot of elements. Leary is likely just the guy who can deliver an aging, washed out musician who barely had a career in the first place, and is now trying to make something happen for himself. That’s especially true if this is angling for a comedy that can also deliver some weightier moments, which looks to be the case.
Catch all the info below, and let me know what you think. Will you be tuning in?

FX announced in January that it was reteaming with Rescue Me mastermind Denis Leary for a rock-and-roll-set sitcom, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, in which Leary plays Johnny Rock, the washed-up musician who was on track to be the next big thing in the early '90s until he ruined it all with addiction and a variety of other bad choices. Now the network has ordered ten episodes of the show, and more importantly, released these bananas images of Leary and his co-stars John Corbett, John Ales, and Robert Kelly all done up as "The Heathens." Whaaaaat is going on with these wigs? As a period piece or in flashbacks, sure, but present-day spiky mullets? Especially with a comfy-cozy white cardigan/blazer thing? File these photos under "confusing but intriguing."...

FX is continuing its aggressive recent push into comedy with a series order for Denis Leary's typographically controversial "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll." The "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll" -- no spaces, silly FX -- order is for 10 episodes, with the series set to premiere in 2015. Nearly everybody involved wanted to have comments in the official press release. "I am extremely elated at the opportunity to once again be working with John Landgraf and the fine executive talent over at FX," blurbs Leary. "They have a great platform for comedy, an award-winning marketing team and an amazing new Nespresso machine in the conference room. The Gran Maestria C520 Platinum? Get this: it heats the cup! Also, doing this show with FX will allow me to live one of my last show-business dreams: Emmy-winner Peter Tolan will be playing my gay stepdad. I know what you're thinking - isn't Peter just a few years older than Denis?...

Denis Leary has created and will star in a new half-hour comedy on FX in the near future, the network announced today. Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is about Johnny Rock (Leary), the onetime lead singer of a critically beloved rock band that disbanded — on the day their debut album came out — thanks to Johnny's substance abuse and bad behavior, like sleeping with his bandmates' wives. Now 50 and washed up, he wants to get the band back together in the hopes of achieving the fame and glory they missed out on the first time. According to the statement, the show will also include original music and occasional cameos from rock stars. It's set to start filming in the spring. If the show is anything like Leary and FX's previous show Rescue Me, expect a stunningly good first season or two, an okay mid-range, and then a weird "holy crap, that's still on?...
