When Fatima Sana Shaikh Signed Thugs Of Hindostan For Almost Free (Picture Credit: Facebook & IMDb)
Fatima Sana Shaikh is one of the few actresses who was launched with a bang but then was buried under the extraordinary expectations built after their performance in their debut films. While she made a brilliant debut with Aamir Khan’s Dangal in 2016 she had to struggle hard for her second film.
When Aamir Khan moved to Thugs of Hindostan from Dangal, rumors were rife that he tried hard to pitch his on-screen daughter Fatima in the film. However, at that time, Deepika Padukone was a part of the film.
Dp initially joined the film opposite Hrithik Roshan, who was the original choice for the Thugs Of Hindostan. But since Hrithik demanded a lot of changes in the script, he was unceremoniously dropped from the film, and Aamir was very keen to come on board immediately.

After a long time, Akshay Kumar once again tasted success with Amit Rai’s Omg 2. The film, which returned with a sequel in August last year, faced a box office clash with Sunny Deol-led Gadar 2. Ever since Omg 2 received an A-certificate, makers have often been expressing their disappointment with the Central Board Of Film Certification (Cbfc) for issuing the same. Now, in the latest interview, the filmmaker opened up about the less-than-expected box office performance of the film.
For the unversed, the film, which also stars Yami Gautam and Pankaj Tripathi in the pivotal roles, faced 27 cuts by Cbfc and received an A-certificate ahead of its release. Right from the lead actors to the filmmaker, many expressed this dissatisfaction with the same while bashing the Film Certification board.

Cinema has been a little duller for the eight-year absence of Tarsem Singh Dhandwar, the Indian-born auteur whose flamboyant formal style carried over from the music video realm into a distinctively sensuous strain of mainstream fantasy filmmaking — halted by the relative disappointment of 2015’s lackluster Ryan Reynolds vehicle “Self/less.” That makes Singh Dhandwar’s return with “Dear Jassi” something of an event, even before considering the film’s surprising expansion of his repertoire: Leaving behind Hollywood, genre cinema and his trademark maximalist mise-en-scène for his first film made in his homeland, the director keeps things simple but stately in this fact-based tale of young, star-crossed love in India’s Punjab region.
The result is sometimes slack but incrementally powerful, marked by a palpable sense of renewed purpose on the part of its helmer. Singh Dhandwar claims the true story of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, a young Indian-Canadian woman murdered by...

Tarsem Singh Dhandwar’s “Dear Jassi” starts with a declaration: This is a love story. Sikh singer Kanwar Grewal proclaims this directly to the audience while sitting in the lush fields of Punjab, visibly moved already by the the events about to be depicted. Over the next 132 minutes, Dhandwar weaves the stirring, tragic, and true journey of Jassi (Pavia Sidhu) and Mithu (Yugam Sood).
Jaswinder “Jassi” Kaur and Sukhwinder Singh “Mithu” Sidhu met in Punjab in the 1990s, where they quickly fell in love. “Dear Jassi” chronicles their courtship from that first serendipitous meeting and through years of love letters, phone calls, and a secret marriage. Dhandwar and his cinematographic collaborator Brendan Galvin instantly immerse viewers in the story, told through long takes and slow, steady panning that captures the stillness of rural India — and how love and hate can shake that peace to its very roots.

The quasi-narrator who bookends Tarsem Singh’s return to the big screen with the India-set Dear Jassi doesn’t quite know where to start his ripped-from-the-headlines true story-turned-folk-tale. His Juliet in the Canadian-raised Jassi (Pavia Sidhu), born to a good family that sends her back to their homeland to vacation with her cousin? His Romeo in the Punjabi-born but baptized Sikh, illiterate rickshaw driver / amateur athlete Mithu (Yugam Sood)? Or with the fateful meeting of these star-crossed lovers who serendipitously reside one street apart?
While the plot ultimately chooses the latter, it’s not before providing a glimpse of the future. Screaming. Abuse. Police. It’s a foreshadowing of the other shoe dropping almost 90 minutes before it does––a necessity for intrigue since that hour-and-a-half can’t help dragging in its familiar tale of forbidden, secretive love. In a perfect world Mithu would only have to ask for Jassi’s hand in marriage.

The first film, Omg – Oh My God, which released in 2012, a time when the situation wasn’t quite that volatile in our country, managed to be objective and question the commercialization of religion and godmen and how religion sells like hot cakes. With his long-in-development passion project Pinocchio now out in the world, director Guillermo del Toro has set his next stop-motion animation: an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2015 novel The Buried Giant. Currently in the process of co-writing the script with Dennis Kelly (Matilda: The Musical), the director tells The Telegraph that they’ll begin the design process in two months for the story of an elderly couple who live in a world with no long-term memories. When they faintly recall they may have had a son many years earlier, they go on an adventure to seek him out.

Road To Sangam (2010)Bapu is not shown in the film but I’m sure it will still spark off a debate on the relevance of his philosophy, methods and beliefs in today’s India, as a counteraction to the prejudices and bigotry around. Road To Sangam was inspired by a true-to-life incident in my life. In ’97, I discovered an urn of Bapu’s ashes in the vault of a bank in Orissa. Another incident, unrelated to the one I just narrated, involved a Muslim mechanic, Hasmutullah, who repaired Bapu’s Ford truck. The writer-director of the film, Amit Rai, brilliantly wove together the ...

Film: ‘Road To Sangam’; Cast: Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Pavan Malhotra, Javed Shaikh; Writer-Director: Amit Rai; Rating: ***
This is a small, tender idea, executed with a certain amount of elan and loads and loads of heart. Writer-director Amit Rai’s debut film is a Gandhian parable done up in shades that are at once, pristine, noble, gentle and funny.
The imaginative plot about the Mahatma’s ashes belatedly being taken out of Allahabad to be scattered in the Ganga gets its strength from the moral frailty of the times that we live in.
Miraculously while constructing a heart-warming morality.
