Kalup Linzy is the first in our series of visits to artists’ studios by Sarah Trigg, author and photographer of Studio Life: Rituals, Collections, Tools and Observations on the Artistic Process. She also happens to be the photo editor of Seen. Born 1977 in Clermont, Florida, Kalup Linzy is a visual artist working in video and performance. Kalup Linzy greeted me at the door to his ground-floor apartment in Crown Heights just as he was putting on a wig. “I wore it for Halloween but then realized, wait, I kind of like this look.” His sky-blue sweater had been bought for “either Kaye or his cousin Joshua,” two members of the extensive cast of characters that Linzy has created for his comedic soap-opera-riffing narratives. Since 2002, he has created and acted in numerous editioned videos and online series, including All My Churen, starring the moody drag queen singer Taiwan; Melody...

What’s grosser: the fact that James Franco drinks a spit-laced cocktail in Vulture’s new exclusive clip from his porn movie About Cherry, the fact that James Franco drinking a spit-laced drink is supposed to be sexy, or the fact that James Franco drinking a spit-laced drink is actually kind of sexy? Ugh, we know. We can’t help it! We suffer from severe Francophrenia! Of course, drinking another human’s saliva as a flirtation tactic isn’t the only weird thing James Franco has done for his art. In fact, it barely makes it into the top five:
Playing a serial-killing artist on General Hospital: Franco then made a movie about playing a serial-killing artist named, what else, Francophrenia. Filming this music video with drag performer Kalup Linzy: Remember when James Franco was trying to be a musician? Barely? Yeah, same here.

Hollywood's Renaissance man can now add recording artist to his CV, thanks to a funk-fuelled new dance music collaboration
Another day, another movie star embarking on a nascent pop career. On Monday it was revealed in The Sun that Harry Potter star Tom Felton was planning a career as a grime rapper (a story since rebuffed by the actor). Today, get your ears round the debut musical effort from one James Franco, dance track Turn It Up (So We Can Turn It On).
The Oscars host guests on the single by New York-based video and performance artist Kalup Linzy, delivering a spaced-out introduction: "That's right child, go on, turn it up, come on." His invitation also appears towards the end of the funk-fuelled track, which is available now on iTunes.

James Franco will make his musical debut this July with the release of his first Ep. As part of a collaborative duo with New York performance artist Kalup Linzy, aptly called Franco and Kalup, the 127 Hours star will release Turn it Up next month. The two became close friends and collaborators after first meeting in 2009, and Franco even helped secure Linzy a guest spot on General Hospital during his own stint on the soap. A clip from one of the album's tracks called 'Broken' (more)...

It’s hard to really predict the future career of one James Edward Franco these days, the Oscar nominated actor, film director, screenwriter, producer, author, painter, and performance artist who has become something of a jack of all trades lately. Though it would be wrong to call him a master of none when he has matured into such a good actor but for his other works of art, I’m not so sure how many people are really that interested in what he does outside of film. Case in point, it now seems we can add musician to the list of professions he dips his toe into.
Pitchfork revealed this week that Franco is teaming with Kalup Linzy, a video performance artist who usually dresses in drag for an Ep titled ‘Turn it Up‘ that is to be released July 12th on the Dutty Artz label. Not only that but...

James Franco is not content just acting in half a dozen films a year, portraying a serial killer on "General Hospital," writing books and having art shows, all while getting his Phd at Yale -- he's also ventured into music with performance artist pal, Kalup Linzy.
The two met at an art exhibition in 2009, in Miami, where Franco was struck by what Linzy was doing. The prolific actor told the Guardian that he "had one of those moments where you see art or read a book and it strikes you as a spirit that's akin to yours." Franco got Linzy a cameo on "General Hospital," and the two have since been collaborating on a bunch of admirably weird things they describe on their facebook page as a place "where dreams, art, music, films, soap operas, real life, and performance art collide."

Is there anything James Franco doesn't do? (No, really, we're asking.)
The actor, turned scholar, turned Oscar host has recently turned into… an avant-garde musician?
Word on the street is that Franco is collaborating with the, er, eccentric New York performance artist Kalup Linzy (aka the drag queen "Taiwan") on an upcoming three-song Ep entitled "Turn It Up," out July 12.
Coining themselves Kalup & Franco, the duo met at Art Basel in Miami Beach back in 2009, and, according to Franco, it was basically love at first sight. The Renaissance man said he "had one of those moments where you see art or read a book and it strikes you as a spirit that's akin to yours."
Powerful stuff, Franco.
Since that first serendipitous encounter, the pair has worked together on a number of projects and performances; Franco even gave Linzy a cameo on General Hospital!

In his eternal quest to fill all your face holes, and mind, with his greatness, James Franco’s album Turn It Up drops on July 12, the first of what will undoubtedly be a parade of bizarre musical offerings. Franco paired up with drag performance artist Kalup Linzy to form Kalup and Franco for the album; the two met when James invited Kalup to join him during James Franco’s General Hospital stint, which had we remembered to watch at the time, would have been the only reason we would ever, ever see General Hospital.
Vulture describes the duo, who release their song “I Love You” at New York’s Fashion Week this past February, as a true collaboration. “Linzy said he plays piano and comes up with basic chords, and Franco sends him music he likes and they riff off of that. Both do vocals and produce their own tracks.

James Franco is everywhere, doing everything. No matter what the genre or medium, if there’s an artistic endeavor taking place, Franco is sure to somehow be involved.
Movies? Sure. Television? Yes. Theater? Okay. Short stories? Naturally. Art exhibit? Of course. In fact, other than performing in a circus as a mime or recording a hit single, we’re not aware of anything Franco hasn’t done in the last year.
And now you can check one of those off as well.
Get ready folks, because everyone who has been wondering whether or not Franco will be flexing the golden pipes as Oscar host may now have their answer as New York Magazine has unearthed Franco’s latest artistic endeavor, and it isn’t miming — it’s a brand new song.
But is it good?
That, of course, is up to listeners to decide, but while you groove to the new track,...

Sundance 2011 will probably be most remembered for pretty boy auteur and jack-of-all-trades James Franco's Three's Company "art installation," which prompted the most amazing inquisitive looks from stars like Eliza Dushku:
He also karaoke'd with performance artist Kalup Linzy at the festival. Franco's known for making offbeat career choices (General Hospital?) and this infatuation with the vintage Suzanne Somers sitcom surprises approximately... nobody. However, this is kind of funny-the Three's Company estate saw the installation and got in touch with Franco, he told TV Guide.

What does Morrissey have in common with a Chippendale dancer? James Franco looked like both sex symbols at last night’s Rob Pruitt Art Awards show in Brooklyn. Contestants for Mr. Gay Netherlands
The kind folks at Mr. Gay Netherlands know me all too well and sent over the above picture of a pile of hot men who make up the 12 finalists this year. They include a Palestinian Muslim and an Israeli Jew according to the press release, so perhaps a peace accord can be hammered out? British goalie Joe Hart is adorable, and after Robert Green's oopsie over the weekend vs. USA, he's probably the new starter. He's also a gay icon according to the Daily Star.
James Franco likes to keep us guessing. Just last night, the Ivy League-educated actor was a surprise performer at Campari's 150th birthday bash at the Bowery Hotel. "He was singing lines like, 'Gimme ass,'" a source says, adding that James also belted out "Proud Mary." So he sings, he acts and he's college-educated—what's not to love about this guy?...
