Kacie Anning.
When Kacie Anning met Greg Daniels, creator of the Us version of The Office, over breakfast in Los Angeles he discussed a futuristic comedy series he was developing.
He related his vision of the show and she responded with her ideas. That was in 2018. Several months later, Daniels made her the biggest offer of her career: direct two episodes of Upload, which had been commissioned by Amazon Prime Video.
Last year Anning went to Vancouver to work on the production, which, co-incidentally, had Simon Chapman as the Dop and Daina Reid among the directing cohort.
Now streaming on Amazon, Upload is set in the near future when people who die can be uploaded into a digital afterlife – if they can afford it.

Shannon Murphy and Courtney Wise on the set of ‘On the Ropes.’
After working on both sides of the fence as a screenwriter/producer and broadcasting executive, Courtney Wise is determined to build her own TV drama slate.
Since securing a Us manager, Fourward’s John Levin last April, she hopes to attract Us finance to productions made in Australia.
Among the projects in the pipeline is Dreamscapers (formerly The Gifted), which received Screen Australia’s Gender Matters funding. She has completed the pilot and a bible for the 13-part horror drama which follows a 16-year-old orphan who is suspected of killing her father and is offered refuge at the Phoenix Institute for Gifted Teenagers.
The girl soon discovers the school is run by a highly evolved supernatural race preparing for a war against humanity.

Sarah Bassiuoni.
When Sarah Bassiuoni started as a note-taker on the second series of the ABC’s The Heights, she seized the opportunity to write an episode on spec.
The co-creator and showrunner, Matchbox Pictures’ Warren Clarke, was so impressed he commissioned her to write an episode of the drama serial set in a social housing tower and the adjacent, rapidly gentrifying inner-city community.
Not only that, the screenwriter was invited to join the production as a trainee script editor under the guidance of script producer Romina Accurso and script editors Hannah Carroll Chapman and Megan Palinkas.
“Sarah’s journey from note taker to writer and trainee editor is real testament to her natural talent as a writer along with her work ethic and sheer determination,” says Clarke, who co-created the drama with Que Minh Luu and produces with For Pete’s Sake Productions’ Peta Astbury-Bulsara.

Tamara Asmar.
Screenwriting is often such a lonely pursuit that Tamara Asmar really relishes her time brainstorming in writers’ rooms, likening the experience to being in a confessional.
“These are places where people divulge the most personal, hilarious, moving and heartbreaking things about their lives,” says the prolific writer whose credits include Doctor Doctor, On the Ropes, Love Child and Beat Bugs.
“That feeds into stories, sparks ideas and takes you down different narrative pathways that you otherwise would not have. I have definitely contributed some stories, cleverly masked.”
Currently Asmar is juggling multiple projects in development including Aleph, an eight-part series created by Miranda Nation for Porchlight Films, a fantasy drama for Jungle Entertainment and a movie for Easy Tiger which she now thinks is better suited to TV.
