London-based PR maven Matthew Freud, joined by fellow Brit and collaborator Charlie Mackesy, offered his apologies for winning the Oscar for Short Film (Animated) for The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse.
“I’ve never made a film before, so this is bewildering,” Freud said in accepting the trophy. “I know the protocol is to say ‘thank you’ a lot, but I’m British, so I’m more comfortable saying ‘sorry.’ So, I’m really sorry to all the people who should be on this stage with us,” alluding to the large crew and voice cast who teamed up for two years during Covid to make the film. Freud closed by quipping that he was “also really sorry to my children, my girlfriend and my colleagues at [PR firm] Freuds for basically being absent over the last two years.”
The Boy came into Oscar night as a heavy favorite in the category.

What defines the actions of an innovator?
To Anitta, the Brazillian singer honored for her musical contributions at the WSJ Magazine 2022 Innovator Awards, it’s the freedom of “not being afraid.”
“It’s when you’re not really thinking about other people, and what they’re gonna say if you’re gonna fail or not,” Anitta told Variety on Wednesday night at the Museum of Modern Art. “When you have courage, you just do whatever you feel like doing.”
The 12th annual Innovator Awards honored industry heavyweights such as Margot Robbie, Maya Rudolph and Anitta for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields. Guests were treated with a nutritious three-course meal, an autumn-inspired cocktail menu and a WSJ Magazine tote bag that contained a 1000 Roche Bobois gift card.
Other honorees included Italian fashion designer Anthony Vaccarello, urban architect Jeanne Gang, neo-conceptual artist Jenny Holzer, former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive...

Anna Matthiasson, Vice president of online retail, and Chief Information Officer Mary Demby are leaving the company, reports Bloomberg.
Both women executives held key roles at Apple. While Matthiasson was in charge of Apple’s online store, Demby managed the technology that ran that store, as well as Apple’s services and manufacturing.
According to the report, Karen Rasmussen will now be in charge of online retail but there is still no clarity who will replace Demby.
Apple didn’t comment on the report.
Last month, reports surfaced that Evans Hankey, vice president of industrial design at Apple who had replaced the iconic designer Jony Ive at the company, was moving on.
Hankey will remain in the post for the next six months during the transition period.

San Francisco, Sep 8 (Ians) Tech giant Google’s executive Hiroshi Lockheimer has criticised Apple CEO Tim Cook after he said that iPhone users are not asking for Rich Communication Services (Rcs) messaging support.
In a panel discussion at the 2022 Code Conference with Jony Ive and Laurene Powell Jobs, Cook stated that it appears Apple users are not requesting Rcs capability for the iPhone in response to a question from the audience, reports Android Authority.
“It is clear why Apple is opposing interoperability. But people should be able to send high quality videos and photos to their mom without having to buy her a new phone,” taking a dig at the Apple CEO’s comments, Lockheimer, Google’s Android SVP, tweeted.
The question was asked by a member of the audience in the context of improving how iPhone and Android users communicate over text. That person, along with Google as of late,...

San Francisco, Sep 8 (Ians) As Apple co-founder late Steve Jobs’ 11th death anniversary inches closer, his friends and family have launched the first-ever Steve Jobs Archive online with his quotes, video/audio addresses and more.
Laurene Powell Jobs, his wife, launched the online archive at Vox Media’s Code conference in the US on Wednesday.
“While we do have some artefacts and some actual real material, the archive is much more about ideas,” she was quoted as saying.
The archive starts with a poetic email Steve Jobs sent to himself about his admiration for humanity.
“I did not invent the transistor, the microprocessor, object oriented programming, or most of the technology I work with. I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well being,” he wrote.
The online archive also has his famous 2005 commencement address at Stanford University in the US,...

Ove the past few years, documentarian Gary Hustwit has been putting out entries in his so-called Design Trilogy. Beginning Friday, January 13th, to highlight the release of the third entry in the trilogy, the Tiff Bell Lightbox will be presenting all three films with Gary Hurstwit in person.
Helvetica
The first entry in the Design Trilogy was 2007′s Helvetica. You wouldn’t think a documentary about a ubiquitous font would be interesting, but Helvetica proved to be one of the best documentaries of recent years. While the topic was typography—and one font in particular—the documentary was really an exploration of the prevalence of design and how it shapes our perception of the world around us. I don’t say this about documentaries very often, but Helvetica actually changed the way I see the world around me. I look at things differently and I’m much more aware of...

Objectified Directed by: Gary Hustwit Have you ever wondered why the handle of your potato peeler is shaped the way it is? Well after watching Gary Hustwit's documentary Objectified you won't be able to stop thinking about it. You'll also start looking at all the everyday things that surround us in our lives, questioning whether or not they are useful, and asking how we got so attached to them in the first place. This follow-up to the well-received documentary Helvetica is actually the second in what Hustwit now says will be a trilogy of design-related films. Considering the multitude of issues and questions that he managed to squeeze into this one, however, I am not quite sure that he has anything left to explore. When I saw Helvetica a couple years ago, I was blown away. I thought that the idea of making a documentary about a font might have been kind of gimmicky,...

At a recent London screening of the new documentary about industrial design, Objectified, Apple's lead designer Jonathan Ive joined Marc Newson to introduce the film. The event wasn't exactly a love-note to contemporary design--the film itself is deeply ambivalent about consumption, and Ive and Newson took the chance to unload about design's present condition.
As Design Week reports:
...Ive expressed nostalgia for the days before rapid prototyping.'When we started out we made all our own models. Just pressing "print" is an obstacle to designers being close to the materials and the object. There is a lot of lousy design,' he said. Ive also attributed the 'awful arbitrariness of form' to technological advances on electronic products. 'Form being divorced from a product's function is a huge and incredible challenge for design,' said Apple's senior vice-president of industrial design. He declined to comment on the state of the U.

"Your movie made me physically sick," one audience member told Gary Hustwit (left), the director of Objectified, the eagerly anticipated film about industrial design, last night at a screening in New York.
Far from being miffed, Hustwit grinned. "Maybe that's what we were trying to do," he said slyly.
The film, which chronicles the back story of the people and processes that create the vast array of designed objects that surround us every day, was screened before an audience largely made up of the very folks who toil in front of Cad programs and rapid prototyping machines to churn out those products.
But there's an essential tension at the heart of this story. On the one hand, Hustwit, who created the hugely popular film, Helvetica, celebrates the masters who have created some of the most successful products of our time--Jonathan Ive of Apple; Bill Moggridge, the "father of interactive...

The 2009 Hot Docs lineup has officially been announced and I'm extremely excited. For one, this will be a good opportunity to catch up on many of the films I missed at Sundance. Also, I'm currently not working, so I will have all of free time to dedicate to the festival. Nice. Luckily, there's a shit ton of movies that I'm interested in, so it won't be hard to fill out my schedule (It never really is). I've posted some crucial picks below, but you can also check out the full schedule for yourself over at the Hot Docs website [1]. What are you looking forward to this year? Objectified [2] Directed by Gary Hustwit [3] From telephones to toothpicks, nearly everything that fills our world is designed. Objects look and work the way they do because someone made them that way. Director Gary Hustwit examines industrial design's sweeping cultural impact with the same...

I never thought I’d be so interested to see a documentary about the design of objects, but the trailer for Objectified has me sucked in. And what better trailer to post on the morning of MacWorld, a computer convention of a company which has made a business on it’s minimalistic design. In fact, you see a glimpse of Jonathan Ive, the genius designer behind the iPod, iPhone, iMac and Macbook Pro, in the later moments of the trailer. The film is directed by Gary Hustwit, who you might recognize as the director of the Helvetica font. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
