New Delhi, March 30 (Ians) Gary Mehigan, who was behind the humongous success of ‘MasterChef Australia’, has become a registered Indophile by the look of it.
Somewhat like the Australian (and also Delhi Capitals) cricket star David Warner, who almost became the face of Tollywood during his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mehigan knows more about India than any homegrown desi would on a good day.
Not surprising, considering that he has been here 12 times in 18 months, travelling across the country from the highlands of Munnar in Kerala to Ladakh, soaking in the Hemis Festival, to Nagaland, chilling at Hornbill. Sampling ‘langarwali dal’ and roti at Anandpur Sahib one day or, on another, riding a truck in Kolkata carrying an idol of Goddess Durga being taken for immersion to the Hooghly, shooting for Nat Geo’s ‘India Mega Festivals’ series.
And of course, if you’re a chef who spends more time...

Sandeep Pandit left Kashmir with his family when he was all of 8. Now he is exploring the culinary heritage of his roots as a contestant on "MasterChef Australia", leaving judges of the international reality TV show impressed.
A Kashmiri Pandit, Sandeep has been preparing Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Muji Chetin, Dhungar, Kahwa, Kabargah and Tehr, on the show judged by Gary Mehigan, George Calombaris and Matt Preston.
According to Sandeep's contestant profile on the show's website, he was born in Kashmir in the early 1980s and spent eight years there with his family before militancy forced them south, leaving all their possessions and migrating to Bengaluru in 1990. It was here that Sandeep's passion for cooking grew.
The family didn't have a fridge, so his mother taught him how to cook 'dal' without having it stick to the hotplate, and how to boil food to prevent it spoiling.

Beverley McGarvey chief programming officer for the Ten Network talks about her media habits and media trends in a Q&A first published on Encore.
Who is the most powerful person in Australian media and why?
Government policy and regulation touches pretty much everything we do on a day- to-day basis, so I would have to say communications minister, Stephen Conroy. From the amount of advertising we can sell, to the accuracy of our electronic program guide data, we have to check the rules every time we take a breath. Importantly, though, I think Senator Conroy gets the fact that this industry is going through a period of major structural change and he has taken some positive steps to make sure we can keep doing what we do, particularly for local content.
What one medium could you not live without?

The first week’s outing of MasterChef: The Professionals has paid off for the Ten Network with all three episodes topping the million mark.
Last night’s eviction episode attracted 1.020m capital city viewers, and was again the top rating non-news program for the third night running according to preliminary OzTAM figures.
Ten’s decision to start the program a week earlier than Seven’s My Kitchen Rules has given it a head start on the heavily promoted Seven show. Mkr averaged 1.8m viewers last year.
MasterChef: The Professionals was fourth for Tuesday overall behind Seven News (1.192m, Nine News (1.163m and Today Tonight (1.108m).
However, in the key advertising demographics of 16-39 and 18-49, MasterChef was most watched show of the night.

The Ten network’s gamble on MasterChef: The Professionals paid off last night with the show being the most watched non-news program of the night.
Rain in Sydney dented Nine’s one day cricket game between Australia and Sri Lanka, giving the cooking program more than enough air to breath in its debut and setting it up for a healthy series run. The show features chef Marco Pierre White and regular Masterchef judge Matt Preston.
According to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTAM, 1.165m viewers in the five capital cities tuned in, bumping the Australian Open tennis into second place after the tournament dominated nightly viewing last week.
The ABC’s Upstairs Downstairs (761,000) was the only other entertainment program to make the top five capital city to make the top 10 shows of the night.
Meanwhile, Nine News Sunday was the most watched program of the night with 1.5m viewers, followed by Seven News with 1.243m.

Amnesty International has cast a former child soldier in an ad that calls for greater control over the global arms trade.
The ad was created by M&C Saatchi Sydney, the first work the agency has produced for the human rights campaigning group.
The pro-bono campaign aims to put pressure on the United Nations, which is due to negotiate a global arms trade treaty in July to end arms abuses.
The campaign will involve Facebook ads, guerrilla stickers and postcards as well as an interactive petition that allows the user to sign their name, which will be turned into an underground tunnel or ‘Path to Freedom’ for a child soldier to escape through.
Aussie celebrities such as Blue King Brown’s Natalie Pa’apa’a, MasterChef judge Matt Preston, and political comedians The Chaser team have signed up as campaign ambassadors.
