The actress is mostly remembered for her good looks, but what about her impressive performances?
In Richard Dyer’s book Heavenly Bodies: Film Stars and Society, he writes that Marilyn Monroe was “the most visible star”: an actress whose life was put on display, and remains so over 50 years after her death. She is one of the most iconic Hollywood stars of all time, her face instantly recognizable to even those who have never seen any of her movies. She is a symbol of beauty, glamor, cinema, femininity, blondness, sexuality, and tragedy. While the world speculates about her personal life — who was she romantically involved with? How did she die? What was she really like? — her career as an actress is overshadowed by her fame.
While she may not have been the greatest actress of all time, she certainly had her fair share of talent and intelligence, and always worked incredibly hard to bring her...

The writer of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was an extraordinary, barbed genius of the silent era, Hollywood and Broadway
Anita Loos, the screenwriter and author, claimed – in typically waggish style – to be furious at the women’s lib movement. “They keep getting up on soapboxes and proclaiming that women are brighter than men,” she said. “That’s true, but it should be kept very quiet or it ruins the whole racket.” Loos was a veteran of silent-era Hollywood, when women worked at all levels of the film industry – directing, editing, producing and designing. Scriptwriting, Loos’s forte, was the most feminine department: a “manless Eden” of female screenplay writers, scenario authors, story editors, intertitle artists and “script girls”. Loos may not have been the most successful screenwriter during Hollywood’s silent years (that honour falls to Frances Marion), but she was one of its greatest wits, most popular characters and one of its key storytellers.

★☆☆☆☆ The ignominious face of pornography has slowly become a multi-billion dollar commodity, constructing an image of collective tolerance that undermines the social perception of achieved gender equality. In Stephen Elliott's Cherry (2012), the seedy underbelly of porn is captured in soft hues, painting a pastel portrait of a business it fails to comprehend. Charting the migration of the industry from the sordid shadow of the San Fernando Valley to the vibrant streets of San Francisco, we observe 18-year-old Angelina (Ashley Hinshaw) as she goes from discontented alcoholic's daughter to liberated adult starlet.
A beautiful and innocent teen ready to blossom under the bright lights of the camera, Angelina represents the corruptibility of a generation challenged with the global economic downturn. Yet, through her vapid and exasperating demeanour, she instead comes to symbolise a vacuous nation of self-entitled consumerists, driven by money, fame and superficial beauty. Throughout Cherry, we're given no...

Writer-director Jill Soloway is no stranger to pointed dialogue. Having worked on critically-acclaimed shows like "Six Feet Under," "The United States Of Tara" and "How To Make It In America," Soloway broke away from the pack this year with her first feature, "Afternoon Delight." The film garnered attention at the Sundance Film Festival and packed the house in June at the Los Angeles Film Festival.
"Afternoon Delight" is smart, witty and funny as hell. It takes place in a modern, hipster world of young parents, wealthy peers, ever-blinking iPhones, carpools, kids and sexual dry spells. Actor Kathryn Hahn plays a mom struggling with competitive parents and something missing in her own marriage. When she, her husband and another couple go to a strip club to spice things up, she ends up making a connection with a young stripper,...
