We don't have a lot of info on this one, but following its premiere earlier this month at South Korea's Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, some sales art and early details have landed in our inbox for Camera.
The Chinese language film, directed by James Leong and written by Leong and Ben Slater, comes our way from Fortissimo Films and producers Lynn Lee and Jacqueline Lui.
Camera stars Sean Li, Venus Wong, Calvin Poon, and Yuen Leung.
Synopsis:
Ming is a surveillance expert with an obsession - he wants to film everything he sees. It’s a compulsion born of a childhood accident, which left him blind in one eye. Following a design he believes his father left him, Ming builds a miniature camera, which he installs in his bad eye, restoring his sight and allowing him to record everything he sees.

The debut feature from James Leong showcases the director's strong visual sensibility, but with an unimaginative and wasteful screenplay, Camera fails to capitalise on its intriguing premise.Set in a near-future Hong Kong, a gaping class and wealth divide has seen the city's older neighbourhoods fall into squalor and disrepair. While powerful corporations battle for the land in both the commercial and political spheres, the masses are left to eke out a meagre living however they can.Ming (Sean Li) drifts between these two worlds, trading off his skills as a surveillance expert to expose the crimes and vices of the elite. Blind in one eye - the result of a clouded childhood incident that still haunts his dreams - Ming lives alone, developing miniature, high-tech surveillance...

If you feel like it's been a while since a new talent came out of Hong Kong to seize the public attention with something edgy and exciting ... well, you're not alone. With the established players continually chasing the mainland Chinese audience it feels that Hong Kong's output in recent years has become increasingly homogenized with little room for fresh young voices but James Leong looks to buck that trend with his upcoming near future set techno thriller Camera. Ming is a surveillance expert with an obsession: he wants to film everything that happens to him. It's a compulsion linked to an accident which left him blind in one eye. When a new technology becomes available that can restore his eyesight, Ming jumps at the...

Far from stripped down, the massive 2013 edition will kick off with the world premiere of The Manor, a documentary by first-time Canadian director Shawney Cohen, about a Jewish family running a Guelph strip club. Growing in popularity and acclaim with each edition, the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival is one of North America’s most anticipated film festivals and a haven for lovers of great documentaries — its sold-out screenings and long line-ups attest to the festival’s ever-growing importance and impressive status. Yesterday, Hot Docs unveiled its full line-up (which runs April 25th to May 5th) of 205 official selections from 43 countries, chosen from over 2,300 submissions, with 44 World premieres.
If the subjects and titles are any indication, it promises to be yet another fascinating year in documentaries. 2012 was highly successful for the festival with 9 of its selections making up the 15 documentaries shortlisted for the Best Feature Documentary at the recent Academy Awards.

Michael J. Werner’s Fortissimo Films was surprisingly almost shut out from showing in any of the sections at Cannes (they’re repping the Un Certain Regard title Miss Lovely), which only means they’ll got plenty in the coffers for the near future. Loaded in Asian fare, among the titles that stick out from the pack is recent Tribeca winner Una Noche from Lucy Mulloy, and for the near future Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s next film, What Masie Knew (see pic above), John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties and let us not forget the best picture of the year so far in, Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer.

Now in it's third year, the It Project is a production market organized by PiFan - the largest genre film event in Asia - and their industry arm Naff. For those unfamiliar, a project market is a forum for film projects to be presented to interested investors and potential partners, a sort of highly focused meet and greet where the participants are strictly limited and chosen by a board of industry professionals. It's a setup that allows investors to be confident that they'll be seeing the best of the current crop of developing projects and just being selected for a market such of this is a fairly big deal. So I've been rather happy to spend the past five days attending the It Project as a producer on Gareth Huw Evans' upcoming feature Berandal - his second feature built around silat martial artist Iko Uwais. And I'm even happier...

The fifteen projects selected to take part in the 2010 It Project co-production market at PiFan 2010 have been announced and while - as is the case with any co-production market - a good number of these will never actually get made, the list is an intriguing chance to see what's in the works and what the next couple of years may look like.
Big names in the list this year? Pang Ho-Cheung, in with a project titled Demonstrate Loyalty and Gareth Huw Evans with a new Indonesian martial arts project, Berandal.
The only information given at this stage are the titles but knowing that these are all genre projects, my money is on the Pang being somehow triad related. Berandal, however, I'm directly involved in so I can be a bit more specific.
The film once again will pair writer-director Evans with stars Iko Uwais (Yayan in Merantau) and Yayan Ruhian...

Like James Leong and Lynn Lee’s Passabe, Jason Lai’s documentary Brother No. 2 touches on similar themes of reconciliation, but not just after atrocities committed in a village, but an entire nation with almost 2 million perishing under the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in the late 70s. It’s genocide that the world had turned its back on when it happened, only to wake up in recent times, and to pursue justice against humanity after some 30 years.
