Last week, Nick Quested went to Washington and pulled off a rarity for filmmakers these days: He captured the public imagination without the benefit of Spider-Man or Tom Cruise.
Quested, as some of the 20 million people who tuned into the primetime hearings may recall, testified before Congress about the actions of the Proud Boys during the January 6 insurrection. A veteran documentarian who produced the Oscar-nominated “Restrepo,” Quested was on the ground at the Capitol trailing the extremist group when hundreds of them amassed in Washington. By then, he had been tracking the Proud Boys for months. The night before the riots, he even trailed Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio as he was released from jail and held a clandestine parking-lot meeting with the head of another extremist group, the Oath Keepers’ Stewart Rhodes.

“White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch” will debut on Netflix April 19, the streamer has announced.
Directed by Alison Klayman, who helmed the Alanis Morissette documentary “Jagged” last year, “White Hot” explores the rise in popularity of casual wear retail chain Abercrombie & Fitch, which was first founded in the 1800s, during the late ’90s. Under the leadership of CEO Mike Jeffries, the store became known for its sexualized advertising and its emphasis on an “all-American” look –– which, to many, was code for “white.” As the store developed a dominance in the retail world off of its brand, growing criticisms regarding discriminatory hiring and marketing practices eventually engulfed it in scandal.
“Abercrombie & Fitch said, ‘We go after the cool kids’,” One talking head in the documentary narrates. “If they didn’t look a certain way, they didn’t belong on our clothing. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

If you’re looking to make a killing in television, unscripted might not be your thing. Margins are tight, huge hits can be infrequent and accolades are often rare.
But now, for the first time in several years, a new wave of optimism is sweeping over the reality TV business. More buyers are in the marketplace as streaming services start bulking up on alternative fare. “In terms of the demand for unscripted and nonfiction reality, you can feel it,” says Tinopolis U.S. chairman and A. Smith & Co. Prods. CEO Arthur Smith. “More money is being spent on unscripted programming this year than any other year in history.”

With the brother and sister living together in the Hollywood Hills, having moved out West to pursue their dreams, they discover that L.A. is very different from their home in Nashville. And with Todd’s watchful-eye looming, the pressure is on to grow up or go home.

Still, many two-hour documentary films see theatrical debuts before they hit television, which makes them eligible for both Oscars and Emmys. This year’s Oscar winner, “Icarus,” came from Netflix, as did Oscar-nominee “Strong Island.” And they are among the five films in the Documentary Emmy race, along with “Jane” (National Geographic), Matt Heinemann’s “City of Ghosts” (A&E) and “What Haunts Us” (Starz).

Nat Geo Wild’s “SharkFest” is megalodon-sizing to two weeks, doubling in length as a counter-programming move against rival Discovery Channel’s popular “Shark Week,” TheWrap has learned exclusively. Additionally, the sixth annual “Shark Fest” has also shifted up on the calendar to beat “Shark Week” to cable airwaves by a week, as opposed to going (hammer) head-to-head again.
“What’s better than one week of shark TV? Two Weeks Of ‘Sharkfest,'” Geoff Daniels, executive vice president and general manager of Nat Geo Wild, told us in a statement. “We are literally jumping the shark this year by serving a supersized feeding frenzy of jaw-some shark specials, and by taking the first bite, we’re giving Nat Geo Wild viewers a bonus week of the shark shows they love. Why wait, when we need to inspire everyone to save our sharks now, more than ever? With so much ‘SharkFest,...

Nat Geo Greenlights ‘Hostile Planet’ Docuseries From Guillermo Navarro & ‘Planet Earth II’ Producers
National Geographic has given the green light to Hostile Planet, a six-part docuseries from Oscar-winning cinematographer and director Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Emmy-nominated producer Martha Holmes (The Blue Planet) and Emmy winner Tom Hugh-Jones (Planet Earth II). The pick-up comes ahead of National Geographic’s Further Front.
The series, produced by Plimsoll Productions, takes an intimate look at the way animals have found ways to survive in the world’s most inhospitable landscapes. Per Nat Geo: “Set against the backdrop of a more violent and volatile climate, the battles for survival take on a new urgency as animals face intensified wildfires, blizzards, droughts and downpours. To some, the new challenges are too much, but for others, it presents new opportunities.” Hostile Planet uses new camera technology to allow a close-up vantage point as the animals navigate through their changing landscapes.
