We Are Scientists have said that up-and-coming band Sky Castles know more about music than they do. The Us band wrote and recorded a song with the Belgian seven-piece after they won the Play and Stay at Aloft competition. Asked how the competition had gone, Chris Cain told Digital Spy: "It went exactly as we predicted. Do you remember the eerie details we gave you? They all came true - they all came to pass! "They are one fresh-faced little gang. We're excited to see if they can even lift their instruments. " Keith Murray added: "They're very young. Seven people, one of them female, six of them... undetermined! No, six male, they're from Antwerp in Belgium. "I've been telling other people that this is their first time out of Antwerp... I think it's their first time out of continental Europe. "There (more)...

We Are Scientists have launched a search to discover the world's best unsigned band. The Californians have teamed up with Aloft Hotels for the 'Play & Stay at Aloft' contest, which will give one group the opportunity to write and record a track with them. Hopefuls must first submit a demo to playandstay@aloftlive.com. Finalists will be selected and given the chance to perform at one of three Aloft hotels worldwide. We Are Scientists will judge the acts and choose which one to work with. After a 12-hour writing and recording session, the winning band will play their track live with We Are Scientists (more)...

Give me a D! Give me an E! Give me a…. Ok basically I was going to spell Demos but the repetition would probably have gotten on your nerves. So, getting to the point, Demos – the starting point of any aspiring group, artist or producer. They are your buzz-maker, your informal greeting and your slightly awkward bio page all rolled in to one. If an artist is going to progress in to the realms of Major-Label-Dom (or if one is too hipster for this thou shalt aim towards Respected-Indie-Label-Dom) then the demos have to be top-notch or at least demonstrate some noticeable potential.
Therefore say a welcoming H.E.L.L.O to music newcomers, Cheerleaders (hence all my earlier letter-based chant efforts). For starters they’re a three piece outfit based in Leeds, a city that’s sprung forth a whole plethora of indie/alt...

Apparently, it's never supposed to stop snowing (at least in the immediate area of MTV News headquarters in New York), which means that getting to your local movie theater could be something of a challenge this weekend. But you should really go out of your way to try to take in some cinema over the next few days, as not only do you have a fresh batch of Oscar nominees to catch up with (including "127 Hours," which goes wide this weekend after several months in limited release) but also a fresh batch of new titles. As far as the Oscar stuff goes, now is your opportunity to catch Javier Bardem's performance in "Biutiful," which earned him a nomination for Best Actor. (The film was also nominated in the Best Foreign Language category.) Away from the Oscar race, there's Anthony Hopkins battling the devil in "The Rite," the "Sense and Sensibility...

You know how I always sometimes write about things that are more self-indulgent than not? Like my Brendan Fraser updates? We’ve decided to cleverly group these items into a segment called Walker’s Wheelhouse. It’s self-serving, assumes that you care about what’s in my wheelhouse and that you know what a wheelhouse is. But it also herds these ideas together into one palatable whole, so you can chose to get in my wheelhouse or stay out of my wheelhouse. Whatever floats your wheelhouse. Welcome to the first edition of Walker’s Wheelhouse! For the inaugural post I’m going to show you pictures I took on my vacation to the UK last week. You might have noticed my absence? Or not, whatever. Anyway, a few weeks ago I got my mom black out drunk and asked her if I could skip Thanksgiving. She said yes (or so...

We Are Scientists is (are?) a band. They are (is?) two dudes named Chris Cain and Keith Murray. Or, Keith Murray and Chris Cain, depending on your preferences regarding alphabetical order. In addition to playing rocking rock music, they also wrote a funny web series in the UK. Because why just be a successful band when you can also write funny sh*t? D*cks. It’s called Steve Wants His Money, and if follows Keith and Chris (Chris and Keith) as they try to make money in order to pay back a dude named Steve. Who wants his money. This is Episode 4 because this is the episode I want to show. But, funnily enough, the series begins with Episode 1 and goes on from there. I chose this episode because, spoiler, the phrase “white wine sangria” is used. I didn’t want to tell you that the word “tipple” was...

For a band that shares its name with a Cap’n Jazz song, We Are Scientists sports a pretty straightforward sound, channeling any emo impulses it might have into well-polished, tidy little dance-rock tunes. And really, frontman Keith Murray seems more comfortable when he’s flaunting his bad-boy skills and blaming things on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol than when he’s letting his emotions get in the way. (Really, lines like “Although it may seem unconventional / sometimes indiscretion is worth a try” sound better atop a catchy groove than under a pile of unhinged post-hardcore.) Barbara is the latest addition to the ...

Former Razorlight member Andy Burrows has reportedly announced plans to join We Are Scientists, as well as complete a second solo album. The drummer, who quit Razorlight in March, has been recording in New York with the 'After Hours' rockers, working on new material for the band's third record, according to NME. "There was no plan from me to go solo," Burrows explained, speaking about his 2007 solo debut The Colour Of My Dreams. "I've always been comfortable behind the drums, but I've always written songs too and I had a bunch sitting around, and it dawned on me once I'd left Razorlight I had enough for an album." Burrows also revealed for the first time why he felt he had to leave his old band. "I'm a fan of Razorlight, but by the end I wasn't (more)...

Good morning Boxwishers and here’s hoping you’re getting to enjoy this happy wave of sunshine. If instead you’re stuck indoors, never mind as we’ve got just the thing to bring a smile to your faces – this week’s crop of new DVDs and they’re quite a mixed bag with something for everyone. For those that fancy feeling the heat there’s sultry Latin spice in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, or if you burn in the sun why not cover up like masked vigilante Jonathan Preest in British sci-fi thriller Franklyn. Alternatively, if you’re more in the mood for music there’s biopic Notorious and teen rom-com Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Click over for more…

It’s been a busy couple of weeks recently for cinema releases. In the past month we’ve had most of the heavy-hitters hoping for Oscar glory come 22nd February, some of Hollywood’s biggest names (Tom Cruise, Will Smith) and breakout Brit sensation Slumdog Millionaire. So, we’ll have to forgive the powers that be for this week’s slim pickings as there are only two newbies on this week’s block – Revolutionary Road and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. It could be a good chance to catch up with some of these past films that you might have missed, but if you do head out to see one of the new movies here’s all that you need to know…
If you see… Kate Winslet reunite with her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio to star as a married couple frustrated by the shackles of 1950s American suburbia in the intense drama Revolutionary Road.

With its title and indie rock soundtrack, "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" tries to pass itself off as the underground music lover's dream romantic comedy. But while its characters claim to listen to music and even occasionally play music, they never talk about it in any convincingly intelligent way. Nick (Michael Cera) and Norah (Kat Dennings) have exactly one minor conversation about the thing that allegedly is the source of their magical compatibility. Nick supposedly makes the best mix CDs with clever titles like "Road to Closure: Volume 2"; we don't hear them. He loves an elusive but supposedly incredible band called Where's Fluffy; we don't hear them. The movie is like a kid who likes to wear the T-shirts of cool bands but doesn't actually listen to their albums.
Nick is the only heterosexual member of a band named The Jerk Offs. According to the press notes,...

At the multiplex this week, we have some pre-Halloween gothic fancy, films about the two things guaranteed to start a fight in any elevator . religion and politics . and a little music from Nick and Norah and Jonathan Demme's infinite playlists.
"Allah Made Me Funny"
When Albert Brooks went looking for comedy in the Muslim world, he perhaps didn't consider that it was alive and well inside our shores. Filmmaker Andrea Kalin picked up her camera and hit the road with Muslim American stand-up comics Azhar Usman, Mo Amer and Preacher Moss, who started the tour in 2004 to combat the negative stereotypes associated with their faith by sharing their unique brand of humor. The film intersperses their routines with personal vignettes that show how the comedians employ laughter as a tool of information to entertain, to educate and to show that a good mother-in-law gag simply knows no boundaries.

Due in stores and online on September 23rd, the album features tracks from some of indie rock’s best and brightest, including Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, We Are Scientists, Bishop Allen, and Devendra Banhart. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is slated to open in theatres nationwide on October 3rd. In addition to songs by such artists as Richard Hawley, The Real Tuesday Weld, and the late, great Chris Bell, the soundtrack also features a previously unreleased tune from L.A.-based newcomers Army Navy, as well as an exclusive selection from the film’s score, performed by its legendary composer, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo, Rugrats, Big Love...

It's generally easy to figure out which bands are coming from a genuinely creative place and which are avoidable bandwagoneers, but every once in a while, along comes a group whose seemingly questionable intentions are outweighed by a pile of great songs. One enjoyable dance-rock album could be passed off as a fluke, but With Love And Squalor's follow-up suggests that not as much guilt should be attached to the pleasure derived from We Are Scientists. Brain Thrust Mastery's 41-minute running time contains very little filler, and the album might be worth storing away in a time capsule to someday show how alternative rock has evolved over the past two decades. Once again produced by Ariel Rechtshaid of Foreign Born (whose Garrett Ray filled the drum seat here), Brain Thrust Mastery wouldn't exist without the '80s, but...
