“America’s Got Talent” has gone through many different facelifts at the judging panel, but one person has stayed put for the past 11 seasons: Howie Mandel. This Canadian comedian originally joined up with NBC’s reality TV show in Season 5, where he had big shows to fill as David Hasselhoff‘s replacement. Howie sat beside Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne for two seasons, with Howard Stern stepping in for Piers in Season 7 and Heidi Klum & Mel B taking over for Sharon in Season 8.
Over the past decade Howie has made a name for himself as the funniest and wildest panelist, but also someone with a keen eye for talent. In fact, his Golden Buzzer Grace VanderWaal ended up winning Season 11 and becoming one of the most successful “Agt” acts of all time. Below, see our four reasons why Howie Mandel is simply the best judge on “America’s Got Talent.”

Stand-up comedian Tom Cotter has a friend in supermodel Heidi Klum. After curmudgeonly judge Simon Cowell pushed his red X midway through Tom’s act during the third episode of “America’s Got Talent: The Champions,” Heidi told Simon, “That was totally wrong!” Tom previously came in second place to Olate Dogs during Season 7 of “Agt” in 2012, which he mentioned during his new routine in the spinoff series. Unfortunately, Simon thought that his jokes about losing to dogs and about having twins were just “ordinary,” which is why he hit his buzzer. Watch Tom’s performance video above and read the judges’ comments below.

Monday’s premiere of America’s Got Talent: The Champions was an even crazier blast from the past than we expected. We knew we’d be seeing a few familiar faces — including cat lady-turned-singing sensation Susan Boyle, who has somehow become even more humble and inspirational in the years since her big break — but we weren’t prepared to revisit the judges and hosts of yesteryear. Brandy Norwood? Reba McEntire? Regis Philbin?! (Heck, even he admitted to forgetting he was ever part of the Agt family.)

Over the next five weeks, “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” will feature 50 acts including five winners apiece from America and Britain as well as eight others from around the world competing to be declared the best of the best. Each of these first five episodes will showcase 10 of these acts. The series kicks off on January 7 with a two-hour premiere packed with, dare we say it, talent.
Sitting in judgement will be the regular “Agt” panel: Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel. However, there is a new host Terry Crews, who’s replacing Tyra Banks. As with the regular show, each of these will get a Golden Buzzer that will send one act straight through to the final. Only one other act will get put through each week. By performing last during the “America’s Got Talent” Finals, singing father of six Michael Ketterer is the latest act to be presented with the so-called “Agt” curse. Over the first 12 seasons of NBC’s reality TV show only two acts — Grace VanderWaal and Olate Dogs — performed last during their finale nights and went on to win the $1 million prize. Will Michael’s performance of Diana Ross‘ “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” break the curse? Three and a half months after the first audition episode of “America’s Got Talent” aired on NBC, we’ve finally gotten to the two-night final. On September 18 the 10 finalists will take to the stage for one last time. Each is hoping to win over America with their performances on Tuesday’s live show, which is episode 21 of season 13.
Among the 10 acts still in the competition are three that were singled out for special treatment at their auditions. They earned the coveted Golden Buzzer, which sent them straight through to the live shows. Judges Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell both buzzed singers — 13-year-old English songbird Courtney Hadwin and father of six Michael Ketterer respectively — while host Tyra Banks was bowled over by dance troupe Zurcaroh.

Courtney Hadwin may regret being the “America’s Got Talent” frontrunner from the very start of the season. With just hours left before she performs in the “Agt” final on Tuesday September 18, this teenage singing sensation has seen her lead over magician Shin Lim shrink. Indeed the latter, a sleight-of-hand artist, has pulled perilously close to her in our predictions. However, Hadwin still has the edge according to our exclusive odds, albeit a very small one.
Hadwin and Lim have not faced off against each other since the first quarterfinal when they numbered among the seven acts put through. They went on to appear on separate semifinals. Lim was the stand-out act on the first semifinal on Sept. 4 while Hadwin stole the show on the Sept. 11 second semifinal. Tuesday’s live final on NBC will bring us the much-anticipated title bout of Courtney Hadwin vs. Shin Lim.
Are you on Team Hadwin or Team Lim?...
