Sabrina Carpenter's character isn't exactly the best dancer in Work It, but in real life, she certainly knows how to move. The film, which hit Netflix on Aug. 7, follows a studious teenager named Quinn who tries to get into her dream school by creating her own dance team. The only catch is that she has never danced a day in her life. Unlike her character, the 21-year-old actress is no stranger to dance and has been known to show off her moves on YouTube. While Carpenter did film her own dance sequences, she admitted that it was a bit of a struggle nailing down all the routines.
"It's actually really funny because I definitely hadn't danced for a minute before we shot this movie," she told Popsugar. "So it was the perfect rehearsal that I didn't know that I needed going into making it." Since her character Quinn isn't exactly the most coordinated dancer,...

Once in a weird while, a movie mimics the flaws — and charms — of its protagonist’s journey to an uncanny degree. Like high schooler Quinn Ackermann, a two-left-footer who does a crash course in dancing in order to get into her first-choice college, “Work It” often feels like it too crammed in hopes a becoming a hit. Directed by Laura Terruso and written by Alison Peck (Alicia Keys is a producer), this fairly routine dance-off outing streams on Netflix starting Aug. 7.
Disney Channel-crafted pop star Sabrina Carpenter leads a cast packed with amiable lovelies, including Liza Koshy as best friend Jas, Josh Taylor as Quinn’s love interest, and Keiynan Lonsdale as the haughty head of the high school’s championship dance team.
A straight-a student, Quinn wants to attend her deceased father’s alma mater, Duke University, aka “the Harvard of the South.” On a campus visit, she...

"You can't think your way through this... you gotta let your body drive you." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a spunky dance competition film titled Work It, the latest from filmmaker Laura Terruso. When Quinn's admission to the college of her dreams now depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a ragtag group of dancers to take on the best squad in school... now she just needs to learn how to dance. Sounds cheesy and fun and we already know how it's all going to play out. Of course. The film stars Sabrina Carpenter, Liza Koshy, Keiynan Lonsdale, Drew Ray Tanner, with Michelle Buteau and Jordan Fisher. Featuring dance choreography by Aakomon Jones. This looks like they followed a check list of ticking off every dance movie trope they can think of. It wouldn't be a real dance movie without them. Here's the official trailer...

Imagine if Bring It On was combined with Pitch Perfect with a dash of The House Bunny. That is the vibe I get from the new trailer for Step Sisters. Overall this movie looks like it has quite a bit of potential. It was directed by Charles Stone III (Drumline) and choreographed by Aakomon Jones (Pitch Perfect) which will help. Here’s a synopsis for those that can’t watch the trailer:
Jamilah has her whole life figured out. She's the president of her black sorority, captain of their champion step dance crew, is student liaison to the college dean, and her next move is on to Harvard Law School. She's got it all, right? But when the hard-partying white girls from Sigma Beta Beta embarrass the school, Jamilah is ordered to come to the rescue. Her mission is to not only teach the rhythmically-challenged girls how to step dance,...

I don't expect biopics to ever give me the full story or even an accurate story for that matter. In fact, many documentaries are only giving us one side of the argument and sometimes less than that when compared to films based on a true story. So when it comes to Tate Taylor's take on the life of the "Godfather of Soul", James Brown, Get On Up plays like a film that gives us a small taste of the darkness that was in Brown's soul after a rough upbringing and a life in which he felt he was always on his own. The result is entertaining and inspiring while also being a little bloated in the middle. One thing, however, is for certain, Chadwick Boseman continues to impress, following up his performance in 42 with another "out of the park" portrayal of an iconic, bigger-than-life star. The screenplay by Jez...

To play James Brown, the hardest-working man in show business, Get on Up star Chadwick Boseman took an appropriately industrious approach. “The man did his homework,” Jill Scott, who plays Brown’s second wife, Deedee, told The Hollywood Reporter at Monday night’s Get On Up premiere in New York. “He worked so hard; he practiced five hours a day — every day. Even on his time off he was still practicing those dance moves. Chad couldn’t even dance when he took this film.” Photos 25 Summer Movies for Grown-Ups The film’s choreographer, Aakomon Jones, who also plays a

Natchez, Mississippi. It's mid-December on the Mississippi set of "Get On Up" and it's possible that the hardest working man in show business is the young actor playing The Hardest Working Man in Show Business. We're between shots in a scene recreating James Brown and The Famous Flames' iconic performance in the concert film "T.A.M.I. Show" and everything is resetting. For Chadwick Boseman, though, there's no such thing as a reset. The cameras may not be rolling, but Boseman's feet keep shuffling across the shiny green linoleum of the Natchez Auditorium stage, which is standing in for the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. He only pauses to run over to the monitor to see how his footwork looks, but then he returns to the stage, dancing his way there and back. Chadwick Boseman has become something of a perpetual motion machine, but if you watch old videos of James Brown,...

Natchez, Mississippi. If you greet biopics with a certain amount of trepidation, "Get On Up" director Tate Taylor is right there with you. "I’ve never been a big fan of biopics," the well-dressed helmer of "The Help" tells a pair of visiting reporters, pausing between shots in mid-December, more than eight months before the scheduled August 1, 2014 release date. "The last one I really loved was 'Coal Miner’s Daughter.' I loved that," Taylor continues. "Coal Miner's Daughter," which won an Oscar for Sissy Spacek, opened in 1980. "For me I think what makes them successful is I approached this as, 'This is a movie about an amazing man. And, oh yeah, he’s James Brown.' That’s how I approached this, is who he was and what made him the man he was," Taylor explains. "And what I honed in on, what I thought was special is you...
