When race fans buckle up for a Memorial Day weekend motorsports marathon, they’ll be keeping an eye on driver Kyle Larson. On Sunday, May 26, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion becomes the fifth driver to attempt “The Double” by racing in the Indianapolis 500 and then jetting off to Charlotte, North Carolina, to drive in NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. The last driver to do it was Kurt Busch in 2014, while the only driver to actually complete all 1,100 miles was Tony Stewart in 2001. The ideal plan is for Larson to start and finish the Indy 500 and leave the track by helicopter, board a plane for the 50-minute flight to Concord, North Carolina, then take another helicopter flight to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Weather could be a factor, as thunderstorms are predicted for Sunday afternoon in the Indianapolis area. Hendrick Motorsports will monitor the situation and decide Sunday morning whether or not Larson will race.

Jeopardy!‘s Amy Schneider is responding to her recent first pitch at the San Francisco Giants’ Pride Day game being left out of the Fox Sports broadcast. The champion game show competitor revealed to TMZ that Fox Sports sent her a personal apology after some viewers accused the network of purposely leaving her first pitch out of their broadcast. The accusation came after Fox Sports aired NASCAR driver Kurt Busch’s first pitch from the prior week’s game on June 12. “They say the reason they misled their viewers was for cross-promotion, not anything to do with me, so I’ll take them at their word,” said Schneider, who is one of the current Jeopardy! season’s best competitors and the first transgender contestant to compete in the upcoming Tournament of Champions. The director of the broadcast at Fox Sports reportedly reached out to Schneider to make sure she knew...

As a Black man in America with admittedly preconceived notions about the seemingly insular world of NASCAR, I’ve had little interest in watching any of its annual competitions or even learning about the sport. However, when Netflix debuted the trailer for its docuseries “Race: Bubba Wallace,” it had my attention. The draw was its title character — a Black man thriving in, and disrupting the lily-white world of professional American auto racing, with its staunch Southern traditions, and all that the term historically implies. So if there’s any justification for “Race’s” existence, it’s that it has the potential to draw curious African American non-fans (and possibly others), who may then become new fans of a sport that has historically shut them out.
“I think for all accounts, it was a win in that regard,” director Erik Parker, also an African American, told IndieWire during a recent interview.

The Daytona 500 ran Monday night (Feb. 27) after being rescheduled twice due to heavy rains on Sunday. This 54th running of the race was peppered with bizarre occurrences on the way to Matt Kenseth taking the checkered flag, edging out Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s last-lap effort.
On the way to the victory, the race lasted almost six hours (the longest Daytona ever) and featured several crashes. On lap 2, Jimmie Johnson spun out and took David Ragan, Danica Patrick, Trevor Bayne and Kurt Busch with him.
Then during a caution flag around lap 160, Juan Pablo Montoya lost control and hit an equipment truck with a jet-powered dryer. The ensuing inferno lasted nearly 10 minutes and the repairs took nearly two hours.
And then welcome to the post-modern age, Nascar. During all of this, driver Brad Keselowski was tweeting from his racecar:
Fire! My view http://pic.twitter.com/RWn3xMn6No worries We stopped @LisShoe: @keselowski please!

Danica Patrick got her first Daytona 500 race off to a nasty start. The racer, 29, crashed her green car on the second lap in an accident that also involved Jimmie Johnson, Kurt Busch, Elliott Sadler and other drivers. "Wow," exclaims the Nascar.com blog. "The wreck was triggered when Elliott Sadler shoved Johnson." Patrick didn't appear to be hurt as her car got struck in the rear and shot sparks before she steered it off the track to safety. "Danica made two great dodges to avoid worse damage," notes USA Today's blog. The crash sent the car to the garage for...

The twice-delayed 2012 Daytona 500, the race that kicks off the Nascar season, got off to a less-than-auspicious start Monday night (Feb. 27) when Jimmie Johnson, a favorite going into the season, rather inexplicably spun out of control on the second lap and caused a five-car crash.
Looking at the replays, there's really no way to tell what caused Johnson to spin out, but once he did, he got hit hard by David Ragan, then hit again by Danica Patrick. Patrick then went spinning across the track into the middle area and managed to slide right in between the wrecking Ragan and Trevor Bayne (the defending Daytona champ). Kurt Busch and Elliot Sadler were also involved in the crash.
It remains to be seen which of the drivers will be back out on the racetrack. Sadler and Ragan stayed in the race, while Patrick, Busch and Bayne headed for the garage. Jimmie Johnson is likely finished,...

Nascar driver Kurt Busch lived up to his last name on Sunday, unloading on Dr. Jerry Punch when the veteran Espn race reporter attempted to ask him a question after his car limped into the garage during the season-ending Ford 400 in Miami. “Can you get this motherf—– out of my face,” Busch said after Punch tried to ask him what the automotive problem was. When Busch continued his expletives, Punch finally walked away.
Yesterday, Busch and his Penske Racing team officially apologized. “Unfortunately, our result in the season-ending race at Homestead on Sunday was not what we had hoped for as a team,...

Those were rookie part-time Nascar driver Trevor Bayne's odds going into the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 20. Clearly, the odds didn't have any part in Sunday's race. Bayne won the 53rd running thanks to two caution flags late in the race.
Bayne, who turned 20 on Saturday, used a push from Carl Edwards and Bobby Labonte and withstood a late charge from Tony Stewart to win. Edwards came in second and David Gilliland in third, which helped Ford sweep the top three spots. Labonte came in fourth and Kurt Busch finished in fifth.
Bayne is the race's youngest winner ever and it was only his second career Cup start. The race featured a record 74 lead changes among 23 drivers. It also set a record for the most cautions: 16.
