AmericanaFest has announced new safety guidelines for this year’s event in response to the Delta variant of Covid-19. All attendees will now be required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative Covid test prior to entry to any of the festival’s concerts, showcases and panels. Masks are also encouraged for any indoor functions, including for people who have already been vaccinated. AmericanaFest runs September 22nd to 25th at venues throughout Nashville.

Auto-tuned beardo Justin Vernon might give the appearance of a loafer, but you’d be surprised: In between recent collaborations with Kanye West, Alicia Keys, and songwriter Kathleen Edwards, the Bon Iver front man miraculously found time to reconvene with his other, other side project, Volcano Choir, his group with Wisconsin sound-collagists Collections of Colonies of Bees. The group’s second album, Repave — another gorgeous swirl of droning, falsetto-fueled post-rock — is out on September 3.You’ve been busy. I’ve been living in my recording studio, so it’s like, I’d rather not book the recording studio for other people to use. I’d rather use it myself. You’re in at least five different bands. Is it easy to switch back and forth? In Bon Iver, it’s just me kind of making every shot, or working with Kanye, it’s just like, “Hey, what does Kanye want?...

Singer-songwriter Suzie Ungerleider -- known to many as Oh Susanna -- revealed this week plans for her new album "Namedropper" have been delayed after being recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
In a Facebook post on her site, Ungerleider said she noticed a lump in her breast a few months ago, "went to see some doctors, they took some tissue samples and came back with a positive result for breast cancer."
If there's any positive from the diagnosis it's the fact "all scans have indicated that the cancer has not spread deeper into my body."
Ungerleider also revealed she began chemotherapy roughly a week ago, describing it as if "I have drunk some kind of metallic cocktail and now I am suffering from a chemical hangover." The chemotherapy is expected to be in three-week intervals for around five months before she undergoes surgery with radiation to follow.

The National Hockey League playoffs are back!
Now, this could be very bad news for people who don't enjoy hearing the same old Gary Glitter riff belched through the loudspeakers of every NHL event ever, or people who loathe watching Nickelback besmirch Hockey Night In Canada broadcasts with that unfortunate cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)," but the return of the playoffs — this year featuring four Canadian teams: the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks — needn't be a complete tragedy for music lovers.
The passionate emotions and the questionable "beards" that seem to come hand in hand with the playoffs have become genuine sources of inspiration to all sorts of artists from the most cutting edge of indie stars to the biggest of stadium acts.

Sunday night’s broadcast of the 2013 Juno Awards in Regina wasn't just light on awards — it was light on surprises.
As predicted, Carly Rae Jepsen was queen of the night. She won single of the year for “Call Me Maybe” which actually Was the undisputed single of the year. That never happens!
“I feel so blessed. It’s crazy to think how one song can change your life,” she said onstage. “Kiss,” the career-making record that has plenty more songs on par with “Call Me Maybe,” by the way, also snagged Album of the Year. (Carly Rae also won a Juno on Saturday for Pop Album of the Year, beating out Justin Bieber, who made her career with a few tweets and an adorable viral lip-dub video.)
Backstage, Jepsen was still awestruck. “I’m moved beyond words,” she said. She’s also feeling the weight of the “Call Me Maybe” phenomenon.

Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards released a bloody, violent video for her song "Chameleon/Comedian" yesterday, a song found on her latest album "Voyageur." And if gore or inadvertent body piercings from saw blades and axes isn't your thing, be forewarned.
The nearly five-minute video opens with a series of shots of household items, some with post-it notes with a "K" on each note to show possession, obviously signifying some sort of break-up. "K-The rest is yours. Take care of yourself. - n" a letter reads which she picks up as she walks through the house and into the kitchen (with Edwards getting dibs on the toaster over).
However, things take a dark turn when a large knife levitates before stabbing Edwards in the right side of her lower back. Ouch. Edwards gives a quick grin though, so she's okay so far.
From there, Edwards leaves the house for a walk,...

If you ever needed evidence of the diversity in Canadian music – or the fact that the Junos can be a bit of an Oprah “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!” love-in – you couldn't do better than the Juno Fan Choice category, which bundles together Drake, Carly Rae Jepsen, Metric, Celine Dion, Justin Bieber, Leonard Cohen, Marianas Trench, Michael Buble, Nickelback and Hedley.
But let’s be less cynical and instead appreciate an award show that dares break down to a metaphorical cage match between Leonard Cohen and Rush against Carly Rae and Bieber.
That said, both legendary oldsters got shut out of the album of the year prize, despite Cohen's number one debut for "Old Ideas." Instead, the Junos' top category comes off more like six degrees of "Call Me Maybe" with hat tips for Carly Rae Jepsen's "Kiss," her hit song's co-songwriter Josh Ramsay's emo-rock outfit,...

14. Raymond Byron and the White Freighter: Little Death Shaker (Asthmatic Kitty)
Castanets frontman's more rockin' project still plumbs emotional depths. Review here.
15. Kathleen Edwards: Voyageur (Zoe/New Rounder/Concord)
"[M]oodily bittersweet songs with catchy melodies, sung with tightly coiled intensity by a woman with a haunting voice." Review here.
16. Grizzly Bear: Shields (Warp)
Brooklyn favorites who went national a few years ago follow up not by playing it safe, but by using an edgier production style that retains their strengths while providing more challenging and compelling listening.

As most of North America and the world watched, Hurricane Sandy put a huge dent into the day-to-day life for millions along the Eastern seaboard. While West Virginia was getting hammered with a severe snowstorm, New York City and the surrounding areas were nailed with high winds, heavy rains and high waves which caused devastating flooding and destruction. And some of the musicians in the area were directly affected by what transpired.
According to TMZ, New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg posted a 43-second video of his apartment was completely flooded. In the video Wahlberg and a friend can be seen sloshing through his apartment picking up items which are floating in the kitchen, including cereal bowls.
"So much for bacon. My entire building is under a foot of water," Wahlberg tweeted as the storm continued overnight. "Awesome neighbors all banding together to help each other! Stay safe!

Well, this might just be the most interesting news you read today. Exclaim reports that singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards has formed a (possibly fake) new all-girl band called Modern Beaver. “I have some time off in November and I’m working on this all-lady band called Modern Beaver,” Edwards told the site, calling it a “Canadian explosion of sexual fantasy and sloppy rock ‘n’ roll.” When the site tried to insinuate the everything wasn’t on the up-and-up, the band took to Twitter demanding a correction. Spinner has some more information on Modern Beaver, such as its members, which will reportedly include Edwards,...

Last night was a big red carpet night but also a big night for music. The Festival Music house kicked off. 3 days of music at the mod club featuring Canadian artists.
Tonight Kathleen Edwards performed as did Adam Cohen ( yes Leonard’s son!). Imogene Poots was on the red carpet for A Late Quartet. I aske her who some of her fave musicians/artists were and she professed her love for Leonard Cohen's music. Her jaw dropped when she heard Adam was in town!
Christopher Walken was also on the carpet for A Late Quartet and yes I did ask him for more cow bell! Hey why not! Catherine Keener told me she wants to learn to play the guitar now.
Like every other night...after a carpet comes a party! Now I don’t want to sound like I’m complaining "Oh poor me, I have to go...

Nada Surf: The Stars Are Indifferent to Astrology (Barsuk)
I know it's early, but this sure feels like the album of the year. In fact, I'm even ready to crown this the power pop album of the decade. Oh, there's an occasional ballad ("When I Was Young" is especially notable) that reminds of Matthew Caws's twee side, but mostly this rocks out, with guest Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, etc.) an important presence -- that wild guitar on "Teenage Dreams" has gotta be him. Rarely has bittersweet sounded so tough. Nada Surf's made lots of excellent albums, but this is their best yet. A limited edition version comes with a second disc containing acoustic versions of five of the album's songs.

On her fourth LP, singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards gets an assist from her new beau, Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon, who adds lush arrangements to her tales of heartbreak and anguish, inching her development forward even if the results are, ultimately, uneven. At its best, the fuller production adds heft to Edwards’ usually sparse folk. Trembling guitars and a haunting choir provide moody accompaniment to the forlorn woe of “Pink Champagne.” Distorted violin and marching snare drum bring a sense of roiling urgency to Edwards’ folk-pop ballad formula on “A Soft Place To Land,” co-written with The Long Winters’ John Roderick ...

Riding high on the overwhelming critical success of their self-titled sophomore release, Bon Iver are set to curate a new music festival in Paris this fall. The Chicago-based Pitchfork Music Festival is expanding overseas and asked Bon Iver to help curate the event. Seems rather fitting for singer Justin Vernon’s falsetto coo to swoon audiences in the city of love.
Vernon and his bandmates will play the La Grande Hall in the French capital as the main headliner on October 29 with Cut Copy, Kathleen Edwards and Pantha du Prince in tow and more artists expected to be announced.
Bon Iver is the latest artist to curate a music festival, a growing trend as the number of stateside festivals surges. In the last year alone, Wilco, Portishead and Animal Collective have all worked to select bands for various festivals. And, of course, there’s Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction,...

In celebration of the Parks Canada centennial this stunning collaboration of Canada’s elite in filmmaking and music combine to create a visionary glimpse into the unique terrains of Canada’s national parks. Spanning our country, the diversity of landscape is showcased through the exquisite portrayal of time and memory and by the exceptional scores produced by the equally diverse roster of Canadian musicians. The film episodes serve as an ode to the terrains that give Canada it’s identity, and celebrate how as a country we can showcase our beauty and talents, but also make evident that with change of weather and life needs to be change of action and perception.
The films, chunked into episodes for each park, encapsulate a microcosm of sound, stopping the idea of filmmaking to allow the effortless landscapes to reveal themselves and accentuate the music of nature, whether it be silence, animal calls,...

The Long Winters are not exactly known for churning out albums at a breakneck pace. It took three years after their sophomore album, When I Pretend to Fall, to get 2006’s Putting the Days to Bed. While there have been many promises of a follow-up, we’re a few months into the new decade now with no fourth album in sight. Roderick did tell us recently that he’d been collaborating with country songstress Kathleen Edwards, and the two recently did a song for the charity Give Seattle....

I spent most of last week in Montreal, and I’ll soon be blogging about Schwartz’s, poutine, graffiti, an amazing beer bar and, most importantly, the M for Montreal festival. But before looking at the next great artists coming out of Canada, I’d like to give a run down of my Top 10 Canadian musical acts of all time (including bands made up primarily of Canadians). For a country of only 33 million people, our Northern neighbors have had an enormous impact on popular music. Even the list of great Canadian musicians who didn’t make my Top 10 (Barenaked Ladies, Feist, The New Pornagraphers, Destroyer, Kathleen Edwards, Stars, Daniel Lanois, Broken Social Scene, etc.) is impressive. So, Canadians, the comments section is where you try to convince us how great The Tragically Hip really was—or let me know who else I'm missing.
