When Andre Agassi was rising the ranks as a professional tennis player — en route to becoming one of the greatest American men to ever hit the circuit — he often felt forced to defend his hometown of Las Vegas.
“I was born and raised here,” Agassi said last Saturday during a press conference to promote The Netflix Slam featuring superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. “When I turned pro in 1,972 years ago, there was about 300,000 people that lived in this town. I would travel the world representing Vegas, having to answer some very basic questions such as, ‘What’s it like to live in a hotel?’ It was like, wait a second, Vegas is more than just a strip [of hotels]. To watch it evolve to a point where now we’re seeing not just sports come here, but we’re seeing the greatest environments for sports to participate in the Super Bowl and Formula 1 now here.

“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. Carlos Alcaraz booked a semifinal showdown against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic at this year's Atp Finals, but Nick Kyrgios backs the Serb to win the fifth installment on Saturday.
The Spaniard's loss of form was apparent coming to the tournament, having lost back-to-back matches in his last two events of the regular season. Alcaraz's form took a turn for the worse when he fell in three sets to Alexander Zverev in his debut match in Turin.
But his performances and results have picked up and comfortably ended up topping the group thanks to wins over Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev. Having looked like a player in dire need of the off-season, Alcaraz has summoned his best tennis just when it mattered.
And there is no bigger match in men's tennis right now than the world's top two players locking horns at the year-end championships. That's the situation at the moment,...

Former World No. 1 Jim Courier is perturbed by Rafael Nadal's comeback next year, having similar vibes to that of Roger Federer when he returned from a career-threatening operation.
Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, last played in January this year, where his Australian Open title defense came to an end in the second-round stage at the hands of Mackenzie McDonald. The Spaniard injured his psoas muscle and required surgery to repair the damage.
After exhausting all nonsurgical options and his condition getting significantly worse, he announced that he would go under the knife during an emotional press conference on the eve of the 2023 French Open. Nadal also revealed that he would miss the remainder of the season.
The Spaniard's operation in June was successful, and he embarked on preparing for the upcoming season, which he stated would be his last on the professional circuit. That decision has been revoked...

Jim Courier has interviewed many players over the years, and the former Atp player finds Roger Federer the best to talk to.
The Big Three have been compared in many ways, so why not compare them according to their interview prowess? It's not really an important thing, but it adds to the perception of a very complete image for an athlete.
If you can speak well, then it certainly adds more to it. We've seen players improve significantly over the years in their speaking ways, and it's just a nice way for fans to get to know the players better.
Roger Federer has always seemed very approachable, and this was confirmed by Jim Courier, who talked to him many times and revealed it in a talk with the Tennis Channel. He called him the best among the players which we've heard for many things, not just speaking.
Look, Roger's the best.

Stefanos Tsitsipas seemingly had a less successful year in 2023, but former Atp player Jim Courier actually thinks it was a year of growth for the Greek player.
If you compare the 2022 and the 2023 campaigns of Stefanos Tsitsipas, you'll probably see a downward trend. He finished last year with 64 wins and 25 losses, while he finished this year with 52 wins and 25 losses. He played in 7 finals last year, winning two.
He played in only three finals this year, winning only one, so again, it seems like a worse year, which can be disappointing for the Greek. He should be trending upward at this stage of his career, but former player Jim Courier, who talked to the Tennis Channel, actually thinks it's been a good experience for him - growing pains.
It was a year of growth is the way that I would kind of pinpoint this one for Steph [Tsitsipas]. He went through a lot this year.

Holger Rune played his first Atp Finals event, and he impressed a few people with his approach, notably former player Jim Courier.
The Dane had a really interesting experience at the Atp Finals, losing two very close matches and winning one. The victory came after a retirement so basically, he didn't really win any matches but lost two, which he played really well,
It was a strong finish after a really shaky few months due to back issues. Tennis Channel analyst Jim Courier talked about Rune a lot after his exit, including the back issues that prevented him from playing well as well as the coaching carousel, which probably didn't help him.
Well, I think we were surprised. And then when we found out that he'd been suffering from a pinched nerve in his back, it made a lot more sense. Yeah. And there had been a lot of complications...

If you've been watching this year's Atp Finals, you would easily notice the absence of American players in the eight-man cohort for the year-end championships.
Historically, the Atp Finals have not been a staple for the American men for over two decades. 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras remains the country's last winner, back in 1999. Former World No. 4 James Blake remains the last player to contest a final, back in 2006.
Taylor Frtiz qualified last year for the first time in his career and was knocked out in the semifinal stage. In spite of being one of the most dominant nations in the Top 50, with as many seven players, not a single one of them earned a ticket for this year's showpiece event.
Fritz looked like the closest player to qualifying again until an abdominal injury at a crucial juncture stopped him in his tracks. He missed the cut-off points by a very small margin.

Since Novak Djokovic became World No. 1 for the first time 12 years ago, he has rendered almost every tennis record irrelevant in that timespan and potentially in the unforeseeable future.
Djokovic has reduced the accomplishments from some of the most illustrious names to have ever picked up a racket to just a mere stat sheet. This week, he kicks off a mind-boggling 397th week as the Atp 's No. 1. Djokovic has now reigned at the top of the men's rankings as many times as 18 former Atp No. 1s.
The list features retired greats like Stefan Edberg, Carlos Moya, Jim Courier, Gustavo Kuerten, Boris Becker, and Andy Roddick to the current roster of active players that includes Andy Murray, Daniil Medvedev and even Carlos Alcaraz.
What makes Djokovic's current reign even more special and unique is how he's been able to grasp and improve the technicalities of his game, learn to adapt...

20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer recounted his farewell match at last year's Laver Cup , calling his last hurrah a 'beautiful' and 'perfect' way to go out.
In 2022, Federer picked up his racket one final time before retiring for good, taking to the doubles court with his greatest rival and friend Rafael Nadal in London's O2 Arena. It was a poignant swansong to what had been a storied career so cruelly ended due to a knee injury.
Federer would still be playing had it not been for injury, according to his ex-coach Ivan Ljubicic , but the Swiss legend held no regrets 12 months later as he recounted his farewell match in front of a packed house in Vancouver, Canada, where he is a bystander at this year's Laver Cup.

Roger Federer honored his promise of appearing in Vancouver at this year's Laver Cup in a non-playing role and held a special Q&a on Day 1 to mark one year since his official retirement.
Federer answered some interesting questions during the session chaired by former player Jim Courier on the court. And one of those questions came from his great tennis rival and friend Rafael Nadal who arrived virtually on the giant screen, and who amplified decibel levels of applause. The Spaniard is unable to partake in this year's tournament due to injury.
Nadal cheekily posed a question question to Federer to name his favorite doubles partner. The Swiss legend cracked a smile before he struggled to conceal his laughter. Federer mentioned that his wife Mirka was his favorite doubles partner. Federer once played alongside Mirka (who was his girlfriend) at the 2002 Hopman Cup.

Coco Gauff can reach the latter stages of the 2023 Roland Garros according to former Atp number one Jim Courier.
Gauff underperformed at the 2023 Italian Open recently and was eliminated in just the third round by 27th seed Marie Bouzkova. The early exit followed a difficult spell for the American player, who also departed from the earlier rounds of other clay events at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and Madrid Open.
But, despite her dip in form during the 2023 clay season, Gauff has performed well at the Roland Garros in previous campaigns and reached the final last year and the quarter-final in 2021. The 19-year-old has shown her ability to perform on the biggest stage and, when speaking to the Tennis Channel, Courier said this experience will help Gauff to bounce back at Roland Garros this season.
"I feel Coco deserves to be in that discussion, given her run there last year.

Bollettieri died Sunday night at home in Florida after a series of health issues, his manager, Steve Shulla, said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press on Monday.
“When he became sick, he got so many wonderful messages from former students and players and coaches. Many came to visit him. He got videos from others,” Shulla said. “It was wonderful. He touched so many lives and he had a great send-off.”
Known for his gravelly voice, leathery skin and wraparound sunglasses — and a man who called himself the “Michelangelo of Tennis” despite never playing professionally — Bollettieri helped no fewer than 10 players who went on to be No.

Exclusive: Tennis great Michael Chang, who became the youngest winner of a major tournament singles championship when he beat Ivan Lendl in the 1989 French Open at age 17, will be the subject of a ’30 for 30′ documentary by ESPN Films.

The film, titled American Son, has completed production. It is the directing debut of Jay Caspian Kang, a writer, podcaster and TV correspondent. Amazon is scrambling to improve its coverage of the U.S. Open in the U.K. after being deluged with complaints.
The online giant bought U.K. rights to the tournament in April as part of its new gambit of offering live sports to Amazon Prime Video customers. It already streamed the Queen’s Club tournament, a Wimbledon warm-up event, in June, but its coverage of the far larger and more prestigious U.S. Open, which began Monday, quickly spawned numerous complaints over picture and sound quality, the inability to watch replays of completed matches, and “bizarre” camera angles.
More than 80% of customer reviews posted to Amazon in the opening days of the tournament gave the coverage just one star, calling it “woeful” and “very disappointing.” One customer wrote: “If I could rate this zero stars then I would!”

A Svengali of the tennis world gets his close-up in the diabolically well-titled Love Means Zero, an on-its-toes documentary about the legendary and/or notorious tennis teacher and coach Nick Bollettieri. The man behind (at least part of the time) an all-star list of champions that includes Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Jim Courier, Venus and Serena Williams, Boris Becker, Mary Pierce and many others, Bollettieri talks like a goodfella, doesn't know from sentimentality, has the skin of a lizard, refuses to countenance regrets and bluntly states that, “If you ask me right now to give you the names of...

Remember Anwar Congo, the aging mass-murderer profiled in Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Act of Killing?” Well, imagine if that guy had been born in the United States instead of Indonesia, and had become a children’s tennis coach instead of the genocidal leader of a North Sumatran death squad, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of who Nick Bollettieri is and what he’s all about.
Of course, that’s not at all to suggest that these men are equally evil — one slaughtered untold numbers of innocent people, the other just ruined Andre Agassi’s chances of winning the 1989 French Open — but rather to say that both of them personify the same type of narcissistic madness. It’s not a rare condition; we all know people like them: people who dehumanize the rest of us as a defense mechanism. People who pretend that the past can’t hurt them.

Jason Kohn’s documentary “Love Means Zero” is a film about tennis, but at it is also a kind of match in itself, in which the filmmaker serves and volleys and probes for weaknesses in the implacable foe on the other side of the net. That foe, in a way, is also the subject of “Love Means Zero”: Nick Bollettieri, the controversial tennis instructor whose Florida academy taught such luminaries as Jim Courier, Maria Sharapova, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce and most of all Andre Agassi, whose relationship with Bollettieri began when he was barely in his teens, reached heights of glory.

It’s that time of year again. It’s the “Eye of The Storm,” that eerily calm time between the end of the French Open and the start of Wimbledon. It’s also time for our annual “Hot Guys of Tennis” post. In the past we’ve looked at the hottest players over 30, and counted down the top 20 ranked players, but this year we’re going to put all our balls on the court, and bring you the definitive Forty Hottest Tennis Players Of All Time!
There are two caveats – These are players from the Open Era of Tennis (sorry, Don Budge fans), and all of the players must have achieved a ranking of at least #25 on the Atp Tour. There have to be rules!
Three names you will not be seeing on this list are Andre Agassi, Janko Tipsarevic and Goran Ivanišević. Why? They’ve all made public homophobic comments,...

The game is simple: we take two relatively similar celebrities, strip them naked, lube them up, and make them wrestle each other five rounds for sexual domination (basically). Since Tonight will see big screen funny man Adam Sandler going up against small screen-er Kevin James in a thrilling doubles Us Open exhibition game, we figure this is the much better arena to match talent against talent. See, Sandler will be siding with tennis extraordinaire John McEnroe, while James will attempt a brutal takedown with another Hall Of Famer, Jim Courier. But here, in the Ology Face-Off, all you've got are your balls. Let's get dirty!
Track Record In reality, this bout should have come when the pair starred in I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry as two straight men pretending to be a gay couple. But while that may be the thing you know James most for—that, or his...

No one tuning in to the U.S. Open men's and women's semifinals and finals this weekend is going to want to hear this, but I have bad news: the vaunted American "tennis boom" of the 1970s and '80s was a fluke. We were supposed to see tennis broken out of its country-club, upper-crusty enclaves and delivered to the masses. And for a while, it worked. The result, in fact, is the massive National Tennis Center complex, which annually hosts the U.S. Open. America took to tennis for a while. Public courts sprang up everywhere, young kids got racquets and took lessons, and a generation of marketable American stars -- Chris Evert, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, even a naturalized Martina Navratilova -- emerged. It inspired a mega-generation, which included Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, and the Williams sisters. But then the...

Lunch with Kingston Rossdale is one of his musician dad's favorite weekly gigs. "I have so much fun taking Kingston out for lunch; it is something I look forward to on a regular basis," Gavin Rossdale tells People about his 2-year-old son with wife Gwen Stefani. "He really loves noodles. I think that has become his favorite food. We try to find new places to order them." Rossdale, 40, says that he takes Kingston out alone so mom can take care of their 3-month-old son, Zuma. "Gwen is amazing with Zuma and does most everything while I just hang out," he admits.
