For nearly 40 years I have had an enjoyable and successful career as an actor. While I hope this will continue, I worry that Actors. Equity seems to be impeding the growth and development of the Australian film and television sector, where most of my work comes from. I have been an Equity member for all my career.
Until my recent resignation, I was an elected member of the National Performers. Committee (Npc) of the Equity division of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union.
The Npc.s regular meetings, chaired by Equity President Simon Burke, are supposed to discuss .leading industrial and professional issues and the best course of action to take to ensure a strong and vibrant entertainment industry and a safe and fair workplace for performers.. As an ex-insider, I am not convinced that the Npc.s interpretation of .the best course of action. is necessarily in...

Actors seldom complain about a lack of diversity in the casting of Australian films and TV programs, according to actress/filmmaker Pearl Tan.
The reason, she says, is that when actors do voice their opinions, they are .vilified. on social media. Tan has joined Equity.s Diversity Committee, which was formed in July and aims to promote and advocate the principles of diverse casting and to foster more opportunities for Equity members from diverse communities.
Reflecting the depth of feeling on the issue, the committee has 32 members including Amanda Bishop, Annette Shun Wah, Bali Padda, Eddie Tang, Jay Laga'aia, Jonathan Chan, Joy Hopwood, Kasia Kaczmarek, Kate Hood, Maria Papas, Ming-Zhu Hii, Robert Jago, Sachin Joab and Serhat Caradee.
Producers are supporting their cause. The new Australian Feature Film Agreement includes a section on diversity in casting which states .Spaa, Ipi and the Meaa recognise the need for expanding the participation...

At Home with Julia has been cancelled after only four episodes. The Australian parody series, which stars comedians Amanda Bishop and Phil Lloyd as Prime Minister Julia Gillard and partner Tim Mathieson, caused controversy after last week's episode showed the couple post-coitally draped in an Australian flag on the floor of Gillard's office. An ABC spokesperson said: "We are thrilled at the response the series has had, exciting and dividing viewers alike, but at this stage there are no plans for another series of At Home with Julia." Bishop and Lloyd allegedly wrote six episodes of the show, but the last two were never filmed and will not go to air. Tomorrow (more)...

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard has revealed that she is not interested in watching a parody series about her. Last night's controversial episode of At Home With Julia saw the Prime Minister - played by Amanda Bishop - and her partner Tim in a post-coital embrace draped in an Australian flag on the floor of her Parliament House office. Gillard told ABC Radio: "I'm not intending to watch tonight's episode. I've got more to do. Aspects of that first episode were funny, but seriously, I've got more to do than sit around watching ABC TV." The prime minister insisted that she does have a good sense of humour, but said that she will not be giving any further comments on the programme. A number of politicians have expressed outrage at At Home With Julia. Nationals MP John Forrest said: "I (more)...

Australian politicians have slammed a new parody TV series about the prime minister. Nationals MP John Forrest said that producers of ABC1's At Home with Julia went too far when they showed footage of Julia Gillard lookalike Amanda Bishop draped in an Aussie flag with her partner after having sex in her office. Forrest told News.com.au: "Having sex in the prime minister's office under the Australian flag is the last straw for me. I am sick, I am offended, and we should take a stand.'' Fellow Nationals politician Bruce Scott added: "[It's offensive] no matter who the prime minister is. How do parents then tell their children they have to be respectful to their elders and to leaders?" An ABC spokesperson has now defended the scene, saying: "If it's okay for others to drape themselves (more)...

At Home with Julia’s executive producer, Rick Kalowski is confident, his show will remain relevant for its full four week run on ABC1. Despite calls for Gillard to step down as Prime Minister after the mess of the ‘Malaysian solution’ Kalowski told Encore, “It would be annoying to see the Pm replaced in the next four weeks, but I don’t see it happening.”
The show, a political satire dressed up as a household sitcom sends up politicians but also looks at the way politics interferes with politician’s private lives. “It’s not a mean-spirited show,” said Kalowski, “but we do have a go at politicians and media reps, but above all it’s got a fun tone, that’s the intention.”
Some media and political commentators have suggested it’s disrespectful, but Kalowski is quick to point out, they aren’t taking sides, lampooning Tony Abbott, Bob Katter,...

The ABC’s latest political satire, At Home With Julia, wraps today. The series, which invites Australians into The Lodge and life of Prime Minister Gillard (Amanda Bishop) and her partner Tim Mathieson (Phil Lloyd) is set to air on ABC1 on Wednesday 7 September, 9.30pm.
The 4×30 minute series finds the Prime Minister and Mathieson struggling with alone time as they get harrassed by Bob Katter, live in fear of terrorist attacks and receive unsolicited advice from Paul Keating.
In a statement, Executive Producer/co-writer Rick Kalowski said, “We can’t believe the quality of the cast we got. Or how little we were able to pay them.”
With a cast of sketch and stage comedians, the production is set to spoof Kevin Rudd (Paul McCarthy), Paul Keating and Tony Jones (both played by Jonathon Biggins), Wayne Swan (Alan Dukes) Tony Abbott (Nicholas Cassim), Bob Katter (Drew Forsythe), and Rob Oakeshott...
