Since Dancing with the Stars has been around for so many seasons, viewers have grown accustomed to how the show runs.
Interestingly enough, the show’s boss decided to make a major format change recently.
One of the women in charge of Dancing with the Stars is named Deena Katz.
Back in the day, the judges’ save mechanic became a highly controversial topic of conversation.
It allowed the judges to override public votes on final decisions about who should get kicked off.
As of Season 32, this particular format from the show has been completely removed.
Why did Deena Katz get rid of the judges’ save mechanic?
When asked by TVLine about why Dancing with the Stars removed the judges’ save mechanic, Deena gave an honest response.
She explained that America’s voice should be the most important voice of all. It’s not all about the judges!

Dancing With the Stars did away with its judges’ save, with little fanfare, during Season 32 — and now we know why it was missing.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, executive producer Deena Katz told TVLine that the judges’ save — which had been in place since Season 28 — was, at least in the eyes of Dancing‘s creative team, diminishing the impact of viewers’ votes.

Since Dancing With the Stars launched in 2005, it has featured some questionable celebrities, including Carole Baskin, Sean Spicer, and more we’d rather not think about.
Now, producers are opening up about why these “clickbait” names are necessary for the competition series.
During ABC’s part of the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Saturday, EP Deena Katz said that the show needs “a little bit of that clickbait wow that gets people there.”
It makes sense. Specific names will generate headlines when their names are announced, as evidenced by both Baskin and Spicer’s castings.
Neither made it far into the competition, but it certainly got people talking about the show, and there’s also that curiosity factor about how well they fare in the process.
While that may be the case, Katz also stressed during the panel that there’s also the pressure to bring in new...

Producers of Dancing with the Stars are opening up about controversial casting decisions over the years, like Sean Spicer (Season 28), Carole Baskin (Season 29), and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among many more.
Speaking to reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Saturday, EP Deena Katz said “clickbait” casting is something that has to be done.
“Unfortunately, in this day and age, have to do a little bit of that clickbait wow that gets people there,” Katz said. “But the hope is that all of us are great storytellers. And at the end of the day, we’re all telling really great stories in all different ways on this panel.”
Katz noted that during casting of the reality competition, “it’s really important every single season to bring new people in that audience members may not know.”

The producers of “Dancing With the Stars” are responding to the controversial casting of Sean Spicer (Season 28) and Adrian Peterson (Season 32), among others.
“We’re a silly ballroom dance show, we’re teaching people how to cha cha. The country is divided, so half of the people may have one political view and the other half have the other. At the core of it, we always just go for nice, good people,” executive producer Deena Katz told Variety following ABC’s unscripted panel at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.
Katz added that former White House press secretary Spicer became friends with many members of the cast during his time on the show. However, there was a great deal of controversy amid his casting, with former host Tom Bergeron among those expressing disappointment over how the show was being politicized.
“I think everyone needs to, for the two hours you’re watching,...

The October 24 episode of Dancing With the Stars is more than the traditional “Most Memorable Year” show. Eight, count ‘em, eight “Og” dance pros are coming back to the program to take part in a special dance to honor late lead judge Len Goodman, who passed away in April at the age of 78. Pro dancers Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson Chmerkovskiy are choreographing the tribute dance, set to the iconic Henry Mancini song “Moon River.” Returning for the special occasion are Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Kym Johnson-Herjavec, Tony Dovolani, Anna Trebunskaya, Edyta Śliwińska, Karina Smirnoff, Louis van Amstel, and (last season’s mirror ball champion) Mark Ballas. TV Insider chatted exclusively with van Amstel and Śliwińska (as well as a few current pros) about their returns and the dance that will honor Goodman. “[Co-executive producer] Deena Katz reached out to us personally and asked us to participate,” shares van Amstel, whose celebrity partners have included Trista Sutter,...

Ariana Madix is showing the world who she really is through dance!
The “Vanderpump Rules” star took to the ballroom on Tuesday for the Season 32 premiere of “Dancing With the Stars”, where she delivered a performance alongside pro partner Pasha Pashkov.
The pair delivered a stunning routine set to a particularly appropriate track — Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself”.
Madix addressed the “Scandoval” drama head-on in the pre-taped segment before her dance, which she introduced by explaining, “My life has been a rollercoaster in the past year.”
Madix recalled the scandal involving her ex-boyfriend and “Vpr” co-star, Tom Sandoval, cheating on her with her close friend, Rachel Leviss, after nine years of dating, and how it all came to light as part of the show.

“Dancing With the Stars” premieres on Disney+ this coming Monday, making it the first competition series to debut live on a streaming service — a feat that executive producer Conrad Green says is sure to get everyone’s adrenaline pumping.
“It’s like a NASCAR pitstop,” the producer told TheWrap.
Green is returning to the series after launching the show on ABC in 2005. After exiting in 2014, he said it felt only right to come back to the show when it’s going through another landmark transition. And for Green, the key to success will be “pushing the boundaries” to create a show that’s even more spectacular than it was on broadcast television, he added.
In a new interview with TheWrap, Green laid out just how he’ll do just that, including breaking out of the confines of the two-hour time window, as well as bringing back some fan favorites like...

“Dancing with the Stars” stunned fans in July when Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews were fired in favor of new host Tyra Banks, but it was a move that showrunner and executive producer Andrew Llinares believes was necessary to help the series evolve.
“I think it’s all about evolution. I think any show like this that’s been on for many, many seasons needs to continue to evolve,” Llinares said Wednesday during ABC’s “VirtuFALL” virtual panel for the show. “I think changing the host was all about evolution. It was about making the show feel fresh, making it feel new, kind of make it reach out to a new audience, as well as the audience that’s been there for years.”
Llinares believes there’s a “real danger” when a long-running show sticks to the status quo year in and year out. “The audience almost gets bored of the rhythm of it.

Dancing with the Stars has waltzed off to a flying start this season with its highest ratings in three years.
Showrunner Andrew Llinares, new host Tyra Banks, new judge Derek Hough and casting director and co-exec producer Deena Katz talked about a variety of subjects including making the show during Covid-19, the departure of host Tom Bergeron and the controversy of casting Tiger King’s Carole Baskin. The quartet were speaking as part of an ABC virtual press tour.
While some were concerned that a show like Dancing, which sees dancers in close contact, would suffer at the hands of Covid-19, Llinares said he believes the virus has forced them to make creative measures that have improved the show.
“There’s lots of changes we’ve made because of the situation we’re in this year, which I think has improved the show in a really big way,” he said.

Add Witney Carson — and her husband Carson McAllister — to the long list of people who were shocked that “Dancing with the Stars” axed Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews as hosts.
“Nobody saw that coming,” Carson told “Entertainment Tonight” in an interview with McAllister, with whom she’s expecting their first child (watch below).

All episodes of “The Masked Singer” seasons 1 and 2, and the first 11 episodes from the current season 3, will be available on Tubi’s ad-supported VOD service beginning Thursday, April 3, at 5 p.m. Pt.
“The Masked Singer” — in which lavishly disguised celebrity vocalists compete for votes, revealing their identity when they get booted from the competition (or win) — is emceed by Nick Cannon with panelists Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke. The singing-competition show has been a ratings powerhouse for Fox, averaging a 3.3 Live + 7 Day rating and 15 million viewers across all platforms.
Going forward, new “Masked Singer” season 3 eps will be available on Tubi at least a week after they air on Fox, according to a Tubi rep.

Audrey Morrissey can’t stop the feeling.
The showrunner and executive producer of NBC’s “The Voice” spends most of her professional life thinking about songs. She thinks about the new and not-so-new tunes that should be in the repertoire of her hit singing-competition series. She thinks about how music can be a signpost for shifts in the culture. More than anything, she thinks about songs and artists and how to present them onstage for two very different sets of viewers at the same time: those in the studio audience and those watching on couches and beds and Barcaloungers at home.
Now, after a long run as a highly sought-after producer of concert specials, awards shows, live events and musical moments for the screen, Morrissey, 52, is getting her first shot at launching a series, which she co-created with famed songwriter-producer Dave Stewart and her husband and longtime collaborator, director Ivan Dudynsky.

On Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer,” the Raven was unmasked and it was exactly who you thought it was: Ricki Lake. And she thought it was kind of obvious too.
“I kind of knew [people were guessing me]. The clues seemed like a dead giveaway,” Lake said Wednesday during the show’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour following a screening of the episode. “I was, like, ‘They are going to know it’s me.'”
Among the Raven clues over the last few weeks: A pregnancy test — Lake made the 2008 birthing documentary “The Business of Being Born” — and that she had hosted a talk show. On Wednesday’s episode, her physical clue was a Daytime Emmy Award (definition of a #humblebrag); Lake won Outstanding Talk Show Host for “The Ricki Lake Show” in 2013.
“The hardest part of this job was trying to keep my mouth shut [when people were guessing it’s me] on Instagram,” Lake continued. “Everyone is like,...

"But this time I actually didn't ask him because I thought he might be a little busy." Katz revealed she has approached numerous current Olympians about the possibility of joining season 23 of the ABC reality dance competition. "You know it worked with Shawn Johnson,...

Despite the recent addition of a transgender celebrity to Dancing With the Stars 2011 season 13, there will be no same-sex couples on DWTS any time soon. While adding transgender man Chaz Bono to the cast this season stirred up questions about possible same-sex couples in the future, executive producer Conrad Green is totally against the idea.
“We’ve discussed (such) pairings in the past,” Green said, according to Today.com. “But the traditional role in ballroom (dancing) is for men to have a female partner, so that’s what we’ll do.” Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star Carson Kressley will be dancing with a female partner this season, which has irritated some gay activists who thought he should be partnered with a guy.
“I’m surprised when people get upset about the partnering,” DWTS senior producer Deena Katz said. “This is not a social dancing show, it’s a dancing competition.

Los Angeles — It's become a proud athletic tradition: Winning "Dancing With the Stars."
When Hines Ward took home the mirrorball trophy on the hit show Tuesday, he joined its winningest group of alumni: Athletes. Professional athletes have taken the "Dancing" title six times in the past 12 seasons.
Since the show premiered stateside in 2005, three Olympians, two football stars and one race-car driver have been named "Dancing" champs. Three other NFL stars and an Olympic skater finished the popular show in second place.
Ward, a Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and former Super Bowl most valuable player, credits his professional dance partner, Kym Johnson, with their dance victory. He plans to keep his new mirrorball right next to his Super Bowl trophy.
"It's special," the 35-year-old said, glittery trophy in hand. "With football, it takes all 53 guys. With this mirrorball, it was just Kym and I together in the studio putting in the hours.

No time to rest on one’s laurels: The producers of Dancing with the Stars returned to the drawing board this week to begin casting the show’s 12th edition that’ll bow in late March. Executive Producer Conrad Green and casting guru Deena Katz definitely have their work cut out for them: Though the show has featured its share of headline-grabbing contestants (Hi, Marie Osmond, Melissa Rycroft and Kate Gosselin!), no one has been quite so polarizing – and great for ratings – as season 11′s Bristol Palin.
