On Dec. 19, the Miss Universe pageant crowned its 2012 winner: and Olivia Culpo, Miss USA, took home the coveted crown. Culpo, who is rumored to be dating Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, takes over for 2011 winner Leila Lopes of Angola.
The 20-year-old Boston University student and cellist put her studies on hold to perform the duties involved in being Miss USA. She'd only been participating in pageants for a year when she was crowned Miss USA, after having been Miss Rhode Island.
Raised in Edgewood, Rhode Island, Culpo comes from a family of musicians, and has four siblings.
She's a relatively controversial contestant. Miss Pennsylvania, Sheena Monin, quit the Miss Universe organization last year after Culpo won, first citing the organization's policy regarding transgendered contestants (who are allowed to participate) and later claiming she quit because she felt that Culpo's win was rigged.

Latinas' beauty has been celebrated by many and awarded over the years by international organizations such as Miss Universe, where contestants must excel physically and orally in performance and projection.
For decades, Venezuela and Puerto Rico have maintained a strong rivalry, since their contestants have been the only ones to win the competition at least once each decade over the past 40 years.
The South American country is ahead, boasting six crowns, while the Caribbean island has earned at least five victories. And in 2009, Venezuelans set a world record when they became the first to crown two queens consecutively.
Furthermore, in the past 20 years, Latinas have won more than half of the top positions provided by the organization, including the most recent winners: Mexican Ximena Navarrete (2010), Venezuelans Stefania Fernandez (2009) and Dayana Mendoza (2008), and Puerto Rican Zuleyka Rivera (2006).

Audiences who know Michael Winterbottom as the director of such wry Brit flicks as "24 Hour Party People" and "The Trip" may be surprised by his latest release, "Trishna," a melodramatic adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" set in modern-day India. Freida Pinto plays the title character, a poor but beautiful girl from rural Rajasthan whose affair with a half-English hotel heir (Riz Ahmed) lifts her out of her life of drudgery, only to deposit her in a fresh (if better-decorated) hell. The exotic locations give audiences plenty to "ooh" and "ah" at, and the elaborate rules of Indian society -- both in conservative Rajasthan and permissive Mumbai -- lend contemporary credibility to Hardy's 19th-century storyline. Pinto's Trishna, meanwhile, is a haunting if frequently frustrating feminine icon, utterly hemmed in by her low status -- except during one fateful moment.

In a social media twist on "Et phone home," citizens of Earth are invited to participate in a global Twitter event to send a message replying to an unexplained signal from deep space observed by scientists 35 years ago.
Coinciding with tonight's premiere of the National Geographic Channel's new series, "Chasing UFOs," you can create your own tweet that will be combined with others from around the world and they'll all be transmitted into space back to the area where the original signal came from.
The 'Chasing UFOs' team promotes the Wow! Signal Reply.

On Monday night, the world was a joyful place full of smiles and rainbows when Leila Lopes, Miss Angola, was crowned Miss Universe 2011 with all the requisite tears and confetti.
But of course it couldn't last.
After the pageant Premiere.fr, a French magazine, chatted with Miss France, Laury Thilleman, who was a Top 10 finalist. Thilleman said lots of positive things about making it to the final rounds, but also threw in some less-than-positive details about the ultimate winner, Lopes.
Of Miss Angola, Thilleman said, "She's the only girl I did not know too well. We did not see her much, she was very discreet. She was often in jeans and no makeup" (a high crime on the pageant circuit, we're sure).
Thilleman also added, "We were all surprised by her victory. Many girls efforts have been made which have not been rewarded."
She also added a strange statement connecting the win for Angola,...

With the summer unofficially over, we were starting to mourn the rapid loss of hot babes on the beach in bikinis. But then we realized last night, wait, who needs the sand and surf when there's plenty of skin right on our very own TVs? We're referring, naturally, to the 60th Annual Miss Universe Pageant, which was broadcast on Monday from São Paulo, Brazil, and featured plenty of scantily clad women in skimpy swimwear. Of course, the one that definitely caught our eye—and, obviously, everybody else's—was lovely Leila Lopes from Angola, who ultimately sashayed off with the crown. But, as you peruse our gorgeous new gallery of the top 16 ladies, we think you'll agree...

When a contest with important world repercussions takes place, there is bound to be controversy surrounding the results. Think the contested 2000 U.S. presidential election or, to look to a more recent example, Monday's (Sept. 12) Miss Universe 2011 pageant.
Apparently fans of the pageant are not universally on-board with winner Leila Lopes, Miss Angola. A vocal group of Filipinos -- and possibly one big-name erstwhile daytime talk star -- are convinced that Shamcey Supsup, Miss Philippines, was basically robbed of the title.
A poorly sourced quote making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter, and attributed to Oprah Winfrey, questions the results:
"I have reservations with the results. If the only basis is the Q and A portion, after having been trimmed down to 5, Ms. Philippines deserved to win. What made her different from the rest is that she had no seconds to rethink of her answer as she had no interpreter to break the ice.
