Portuguese director Susana Nobre explores the sadness of bereavement with deadpan obliqueness in this story about a woman’s reaction to her mother’s death
There’s a studied impassivity to this elegant Portuguese movie about grief from Susana Nobre. It’s a film that maintains its near-affectless deadpan style from first to last, and declines to offer a conventional emotional payoff, or indeed the usual narrative shape that might lead to such a climax – although there is an emotional outpouring of sorts. It isn’t exactly that sadness finds its outlet in oblique or unusual ways but the way it is represented on screen is indirect.
Helena (Raquel Castro) is a production manager on a film shoot, dealing with a difficult director. She is divorced, sharing custody of a teen daughter, and in a relationship with a musician who is away on tour. Her elderly widowed mother, who lives...

Portuguese director Susana Nobre’s first scripted fiction film, “Cidade Rabat,” is about a producer who grew up in the Cidade Rabat neighborhood in Lisbon, and who suddenly has to come to terms with the death of her mother.
The title is partly inspired by her own life, since she grew up in the “Cidade Rabat” district of Benfica in Lisbon. Much of the action takes place in the nearby mixed-race neighborhood, Reboleira. Nobre describes the film as a “melancholic comedy about a woman who is about to turn 40, whose life enters a period of chaos when she loses her mother and suddenly lives a second adolescence.”
There is a nostalgic feel to the film, of a district that was once brimming with energy but is now crumbling. This nostalgia is mixed with hope for a new life, embodied by the main character Helena’s 12-year old daughter, for which Nobre cast her own daughter.

After his heart attack in 2018, Kevin Smith isn't even supposed to be here today — but boy, are we glad he still is! The New Jersey native with the gift of the gab has spent the better part of the past three decades willing his whimsy into reality. They say write about what you know, and Smith has made a solid career out of doing precisely that, much to the adoration of his die-hard fans across the globe.
It's more than that though. As one of the original indie filmmakers of the early '90s, Smith proved that anyone could make a movie. While Quentin Tarantino splattered us with blood and Wes Anderson perfected immaculate shots, Smith seemed like one of us — just a regular guy, with a regular life, who loved dissecting the big issues of the day like movies, TV, and the logistics of building a Death Star.

“Songland” hitmakers Ester Dean, Shane McAnally and Ryan Tedder took a moment out of quarantining at home and Zoom songwriting sessions to host a listening party prior to the April 27 episode with guest H.E.R.
The NBC series is only three episodes into its new season and has already charted two No. 1s on iTunes — “Champagne Night” by Lady Antebellum reached the top of the iTunes country chart and No. 1 on the overall chart, and “Sway” by Luis Fonsi hit No. 1 on the Latin chart as well as the overall chart as well. Monday night’s winning “Wrong Places,” from former “Voice” contestant (and star of the Kevin Smith film “Jersey Girl”) Raquel Castro’s winning collaboration and recorded by H.E.R, is already at No. 2 on the R&b Soul chart and No. 3 overall.

Netflix released the opening credits for its upcoming animated “Carmen Sandiego” series, and it features a theme song that’s quite different from the classic Rockapella tune used on PBS’ 1990s-era game show, “Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego.”
The new version, which you can listen to below, was written by Jared Lee Gosselin and sung by Raquel Castro.

After it bowed at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, director Matthew Newton’s (“Three Blind Mice”) latest feature “From Nowhere” took home the Audience Award in the Narrative Spotlight section, and now the festival winner is due for its theatrical release.
The film will arrive in theaters on February 17 in both New York City (at the Village East) and in Los Angeles (at the Laemmle Music Hall). Its timing couldn’t be more appropriate, as the film reflects the fear of deportation that many people now have regarding the stance our current administration has on immigration.

Ideally, singing competitions like NBC’s The Voice offer undiscovered contestants the chance to become almost famous. But in season 5, which began on Monday, we’re seeing contestants who are already famous.
During last night’s blind auditions, E.G. Daily — the voice of Rugrats’ Tommy Pickles, a sometime movie actress (Pee-wee’s Big Adventure), and a singer with a top 10 hit (1987′s “Mind Over Matter”) — competed for a second chance at a music career. And during Monday’s premiere, host Carson Daly told Briana Cuoco, actress Kaley Cuoco’s sister, that she will get to audition in an upcoming episode.

Last night’s The Voice did not waste any time getting to the results for the night, giving viewers an immediate payoff and sparing the unnecessary suspense. While a two hour broadcast, The Voice does not play games with its audience and gives them what they want when they want it. Good job NBC!
Coach, Christina Aguilera got emotional within the first five minutes of the show and less than five minutes later, two artists from her team were eliminated. After host, Carson Daly announced America’s save as Beverly McClellan, Aguilera took a moment to congratulate McClellan and praise each of the remaining members of her team before saying goodbye to two of her artists. Getting right to the results after her tearful speech, Aguilera chose to take Frenchie Davis to the semi-finals. This does not come as a surprise, given Aguilera’s praise towards Davis in the past.

Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera each send two contestants home on tonight’s episode of ‘The Voice’. Did they make the right decision with their saves?
Today was tough on The Voice judges Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera, they had to choose who to save from their respective teams while America’s saves were announced. Christina cried right from the start and said quite a few words about how hard of a decision it was while Blake says he “hate[s] this moment” and was “dreading” the elimination. Ultimately, he chose to save Xenia after Dia Frampton was saved by her voters for her Heartless rendition by Kanye West. (She told us she felt “dizzy” when she heard her name called.)
“I can’t affect change with Jared Blake or Patrick Thomas like I can with Xenia, so I am going to pick Xenia,” Blake said, and you could hear an audible gasp from the audience.

Finally, a chance to find out what people are really thinking when they watch The Voice—besides "These judge sure are nutty!" "The Voice" is gearing up for the semi-finals, but it will do so without four contestants.
Two singers from both Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera's teams were eliminated on Tuesday night.
Going home on Christina's team were pint-sized pop singer Raquel Castro and teen Lily Elise, and leaving Blake's band were country crooner Patrick Thomas and rocker Jared Blake.
Carson Daly revealed that America's votes over the last week had saved Beverly McClellan, the shaved-head rocker on Christina's team, and Dia Frampton from Blake's bunch, the pretty brunette who took on Kanye West's "Heartless" last week.

Tonight on 'The Voice,' we'll say goodbye to two contestants from both Team Christina and Team Blake. But who will it be?
Last week's first live performance show was a strong one, with Christina Aguilera's team of ladies -- Beverly McClellan, Frenchie Davis, Lily Elise and Raquel Castro -- battling it out in between performing 'Lady Marmalade' with their coach.
We also saw Blake Shelton's team -- down to Patrick Thomas, Xenia, Dia Frampton and Jared Blake -- perform strong solos before belting out Maroon 5's hit 'This Love' with their country star coach.
I voted online, and I'm dangerously close to downloading a few of the songs on iTunes as well -- a sure sign of obsession -- but I'm still not sure how the eliminations will play out.

We adore 16-year-old "The Voice" contestant Raquel Castro, who represented for Christina Aguilera's team this week by singing Ke$ha's dance anthem "Blow." Her performance included plenty of backup dancers and stage tricks, but we loved her voice most of all.
"There's no lying in live television and that was wonderful," Cee-Lo said. "Everybody agrees, right?"
"I don't dance," Adam Levine added. "You're amazing, because it's hard enough to sing, let alone dance at the same time. You were running everywhere. I got tired looking at you."
Blake Shelton simply said, "Damn it," disappointed that she wasn't a member of his own team. "She is awesome," he says. "Raquel, you seriously are one of my favorites in this whole competition. Dang it, I can't believe [Christina Aguilera] did something right."
As for Aguilera, whose influence could definitely be heard in the song, she had this to say: "You made me get up out of my chair,...

But Tuesday night, after the first live show of NBC's The Voice, the celebrity coach - who sang Queen songs with her fellow coaches, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green - praised her team of contestants for their poise and determination. The inaugural live performance episode of NBC’s The Voice was like a mashup of Adam Levine’s magnetism, Cee Lo Green’s missing shades, Christina Aguilera’s cleavage, Blake Shelton’s ad-libs, and Carson Daly’s personality. Which is to say the two-hour telecast was alternately hot, confusing, ridiculous, adorable, and vague.

Ever since The Voice started, I’ve had my eye on Javier Colon to win the entire competition, but tonight Dia Frampton quickly became a frontrunner with her touching and incredibly unique rendition of Kanye West‘s “Heartless”. When chatting with Dia backstage she revealed she’d never heard of Kris Allen‘s American Idol version of the popular song!
When we last saw Dia on stage she was battling against Serabee in an extremely uncomfortable and bizarre duet of “You Can’t Hurry Love”. I remember thinking she had a charming voice, but not really placing her high on my list. Boy did that change tonight.
Dia sounded absolutely beautiful, with a haunting and strong tone in her pure voice. I loved it!

The sixth week of "The Voice" sent four more contestants home while presenting a drama on stage. Curtis Grimes planted a kiss on the lips of his duet partner Emily Valentine (both from Cee-Lo Green team) at the end of their performance of Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now", making the celebrity mentors' jaws drop.
The song was a fit for country boy Grimes, while Valentine had to reach a little out of her rock comfort zone to perform it. Cee-Lo then picked Curtis to go to the live shows, and join Nakia, Vicci Martinez, as well as Tori & Taylor Thompson.
For the final battle round, Adam Levine put Jeff Jenkins against Casey Desmond to sing Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me". The judges were torn between the two, but Adam finally dropped his choice on Jeff. He joins Casey Weston, Javier Colon and Devon Barley.

Last night on The Voice, the second to last of the battle rounds took place and it turned out to bring out the most pitchy and powerful of the bunch.
“Yeah, that was bizarre.” – Coach, Cee-Lo Green on Dia vs. Serabee
Whether the questionable performances last night had more to do with song choice, match ups, or taking risks, Christina Aguilera took quite a risk in choosing the youngest artist in the competition, Raquel Castro instead of Julia Eason who has more of a clear and powerful voice than Castro. Perhaps Aguilera saw more of her in Raquel than in Julia… the little girl with the big voice that could? Representing Team Blake last night were Dia and Serabee. The ladies battled it out singing, “You Can’t Hurry Love” by The Supremes which Reba did a fabulous job arranging for these two artists. However, these ladies have two completely...

In last week’s battle round, The Voice paired unlikely opponents — too unlikely, if you ask me. Tuesday’s duels made much more sense: Blake Shelton selected his sweetest dames, Christina Aguilera matched up two satisfied Jessica McClintock customers, Adam Levine pitted his freak-flag color guard members against one other, and Cee Lo threw together all the pageant hair left on his squad. So who prevailed? Who took a tumble in the oversize boxing ring of improbable dreams? Let’s rank the four duet winners from “likeliest to win the show” to “likeliest to win a ham sandwich at a state fair.

We're at week three on The Voice battle rounds, which means that it's time for another eight contestants to enter the ring and mentors Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green to make another four cuts as the competition prepares for the live rounds... Here's what happened tonight... Team Christina: Julia Eason versus Raquel Castro Christina chooses 'Only Girl (In The World)' by Rihanna for Julia and Raquel, who is the youngest contestant in the competition at 16. She wants a "fresh energy" on stage and thinks the girls' "youthful energy" will work with the song. "They are my two dynamo gems," she says. "I truly adore them and they bring back memories for me being fresh out of the gate and wanting it so bad." After some one-on-one time with Christina and Sia (where Christina talks about (more)...

Anyone else feel like they need to brush and floss after the sweetness that was "The Voice's" Round 3 of battle rounds?
The coaches set up some rather cutesy pairings in this round. We by no means want to discount the performers' talent in Round 3, but there did come a point where we were starving for some edge.
Let's do a quick review of the rounds:
Team Christina Aguilera: Raquel Castro beats Julia EastonGranted Raquel is only 16, but we kind of feel that she's the type who's just happy when people are looking at her. She sort of always says the right things even though we know they can't totally be true. For example, how could she say she has wanted to sing forever, but only started training professionally a few months before (surprise!) "The Voice" auditions. On this episode, she informed Christina that she's a dancer, as well.

‘The Voice’ battle round eliminated four more singers tonight! I can’t wait for the live shows to begin!
Kelsey “I’m so pretty I make myself cry about it” Rey went home tonight on The Voice after failing to out-sing the ever-adorable Tori and Taylor Thompson girls. Kelsey, who admittedly is gorgeous, made herself memorable when she wept real tears in the blind auditions after Finally feeling validated for being more than just a pretty face. She’s not just good-looking people, she can sing. Although apparently, not well enough to make it to the live shows.
I’m being harsh. I actually thought Kelsey did a great job of holding her own stage, performing “Unwritten” alongside Tori and Taylor. Adam Levine declared the threesome’s performance so “cute” he couldn’t choose, and Blake Shelton pointed out that Kelsey was a more seasoned singer, but that T&T were improving.

Teresa Giudice and her family tree brought out some serious drama on last night's season three premiere of " The Real Housewives of New Jersey " -- but it was nothing but a good time at Teresa's viewing party for the show! Giudice threw a viewing party at Tribeca Night Club in Fort Lee, New Jersey last night to mark the occasion -- the bash doubling as a launch of her new " Fabulicious " cookbook. Teresa's friend Kim Depaola and former "Housewives" star Dina Manzo also attended the bash. Not surprising: Teresa's brother Joe and sister-in-law, Melissa Gorga , did not. Also randomly spotted at the party: " The Voice " contestant Raquel Castro , who has a "Jersey" connection -- she starred in the 2004 film " Jersey Girl ." Miss the premiere? The four judges of "The Voice" have added more members to their own teams on May 3. In this second week, Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton picked five other contestants whom they will coach, rounding up their teams to eight each.
Cee-Lo was the only judge who has completed his team of eight during the second episode of blind audition rounds. Meanwhile, the other three judges chose more talents in second chance round where contestants eliminated in first blind audition were given another shot.
Christina landed her choice on petite 16-year-old fan girl Raquel Castro, on whom the "You Lost Me" hitmaker has a big hope, "From my own experience, great things come in small packages." She also nabbed soccer player Julia Eason. The 30-year-old blonde gushed, "I think we will have so much fun together. You made me feel it. I love your runs and your ad libs.

Does the moppet to your left look familiar? If so, you might be one of the world’s rarest creatures — a fan of The Voice who’s also seen Kevin Smith’s 2003 flop Jersey Girl. Raquel Castro, the girl who starred in that film as the plucky daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s characters, resurfaced on the second episode of NBC’s singing sensation last night and ended up getting chosen to join Christina Aguilera’s team. As it turns out, Raquel is far from the only Voice contestant who had significant experience in show business before snagging a spot on the series.

NBC named the final 20 of its 32 selected team contestants who will move onto the next round of the new vocal competition series “The Voice” featuring its four musician coaches — Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
Much like today’s music stars, the artists/contestants are encouraged to interact with viewers via social media to build a fan base. The fans will have an important role in the live performance shows, as they will have the opportunity to vote to save their favorites on each coach’s team.
In the finals, each coach will have one artist/contestant left to represent them and that artist’s fate will be in the viewer’s hands. One of the four finalists will be named “The Voice” — and will receive the grand prize of a recording contract with Universal Music Group and $100,000.

One of my biggest fears in life is running out of food when I’m hosting a party. In the past, this overarching concern has spiraled out of control, resulting in industrial-sized batches of homemade salsa, entire refrigerator shelves devoted to housing containers of potato salad, and and grumbles from my husband about having to eat turkey burgers for a fortnight’s worth of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. But as I like to argue, at least you’ll never see one of our guests scrape the bottom of the bowl.
Unfortunately, the creators of NBC’s The Voice don’t share my particular neuroses.

Sure the rules of the contest are repeated ad nauseum throughout the show, and of course many of the contestants profess that this is the biggest/only/last chance they will have to make the big time, but NBC's The Voice scored another charming episode Tuesday night as the coaches finalized their teams. “The people we’re not turning around our chairs for, could win American Idol,” says Adam Levine as great talent gets eliminated on tonight’s The Voice
The Voice‘s second episode was just as addicting as the first, and this one made my eyes water quite a bit. As things got down to the wire and Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton had to pick the final singers that would make their team, they also brought out their critical sides. But were they too picky?
Well, considering Carson Daly (who still seems a little fake for my taste) had to bring out previously eliminated singers to belt out a new tune for the coaches, I think the answer is yes.
The coaches realized they were being too harsh and Adam even said “The people we’re not turning around our chairs for, could win American Idol.

She's the 16-year-old who was like the little engine that could on "The Voice."
Long Island's Raquel Castro is full of surprises and she's not necessarily green to Hollywood. She played the "girl" in the Ben Affleck film, "Jersey Girl." But when it comes to singing, she says she's only been professionally training for a few months.
While Raquel performed "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis (who just happens to be the Season 3 winner of another talent competition, Britain's "The X Factor"), Blake Shelton tried to get one of the other coaches to push their button, later saying, "If there was ever a time in which I hoped for a great pairing" it was for her.
In the end, Christina was moved and she says that she knows from experience that "great things come in small packages."
We don't think her performance was the best we've seen in the competition, but...

Whodathunkit?! On tonight's episode of The Voice, we witnessed a variety of emotions, but one story in particular so touched our hearts that we got a little teary! Before 16-year-old Raquel Castro took the stage, we learned that she grew up mimicking the voice (no pun intended) of judge Christina Aguilera. So can you guess who decided to put Raquel on their team? Yup! The one and only soul singer, herself! Raquel kept her cool and finished singing Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", but her mother, on the other hand, began sobbing. And that's where we grabbed the tissues. Oakley took a huge gamble by singing “Gunpowder & Lead,” a song made famous by Miranda Lambert, who just happens to be the fiancee of “The Voice” coach Blake Shelton. Oakley didn’t get Shelton to turn around, but she did win over Christina Aguilera.

The British premiere of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's second film together ended in disaster on Wednesday night - when none of the 'A' list cast bothered to turn up. Jersey Girl - in which J.Lo has a small cameo - was premiered in London's West End Curzon cinema, and only director Kevin Smith and his young star Raquel Castro were in attendance. Organizers scrambled to conceal the embarrassing absence of leading man Ben Affleck, who is reportedly laid low with a bout of bronchitis. His love interest Liv Tyler also dropped out after contracting a sore throat, meanwhile Lopez - who split with Affleck in January - had already refused to appear alongside her former fiance. Since it was released in America, Jersey Girl has failed to captivate the critics and director Smith - who has a huge cult following thanks to his previous comedies - admitted he was disappointed with the film's box office performance. Jersey Girl tells the story of widower Ollie Trinke (Affleck), who is forced to face up to fatherhood and a massive lifestyle change following the death of his wife Gertie, played by Lopez. Affleck and his Maid In Manhattan ex previously starred together in box office mega-flop Gigli.

Actor Ben Affleck has pals fearing for his health after pulling out of the London premiere of his new movie Jersey Girl, because he's bedridden with bronchitis. The Hollywood hunk - who appears in the film alongside his former fiancee Jennifer Lopez - was scheduled to join director Kevin Smith and his young co-star Raquel Castro on the red carpet tonight. And friends of the actor are worried the hectic workload he's taken on in the aftermath of his split with J.Lo and her blossoming relationship with new boyfriend Marc Anthony are playing havoc with his well-being. One pal tells Britain's Daily Star newspaper, "Ben has been watching all the speculation about Jennifer and her new boyfriend Marc Anthony and is very aware that people want to talk to him about it and get his slant. It is coincidental that he's poorly at the moment and he's hoping to recover soon. He has been focusing on his career as an actor since splitting with Jennifer. The fact that she is his co-star in Jersey Girl would only fuel people to pry."...

Jennifer Lopez has been spared the ordeal of promoting her upcoming movie Jersey Girl alongside former fiance Ben Affleck, because she dies just 12 minutes into the movie. Director and longtime Affleck pal Kevin Smith insists J.Lo was never expected to promote the movie in the first place. He explains, "There weren't plans beforehand for (Lopez) to be there at the March 5 press junket in New York, so the break-up doesn't affect that. But I expect Ben to get hammered with questions." Film studio Miramax, which will release the movie on March 19, has been playing down her participation in the picture. Lopez barely appears in the trailer, which makes it clear her character dies during the birth of their child early on, and that Affleck's character moves on to a relationship with more prominently featured Liv Tyler. Lopez doesn't even appear on posters for the film. Instead it features Affleck with Raquel Castro, who plays their daughter. Smith adds, "Now that the trailer's out, people are getting (the idea) that it's not a 'Bennifer' movie." Gigli co-stars Lopez and Affleck called an end to their much hyped romance last week.
