Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?
The title “Girls5eva” refers to a fictitious girl group from the late-90s and early-aughts, as well as their breakout song (cause 4eva‘s too short!): Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Phillips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry). The group disbanded after fifth member Ashley (Ashley Park) drowned in an infinity pool, but 20 years later they’re making a comeback.

Forever’s too short — and so is two seasons, which is why Emmy-nominated musical comedy Girls5eva is headed to Netflix for an all-new third season debuting March 14. Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell star in Girls5eva as the surviving members of a one-hit wonder girl group from the ’90s who reunite in the present to try their hand at pop stardom one more time, all while juggling the responsibilities of adulthood.

When she’s not earning laughs as the flighty but metamorphosing Summer Dutkowsky, the self-proclaimed “hot one” of Girls5eva, the real Busy Philipps — beloved actor, internet personality, and podcaster — has spent the past seven years building a reputation as the brutally honest one.
Around 2017, Philipps started chronicling her daily life on the then-nascent Instagram Stories, speaking directly into the camera with a confessional “Ok … You guys …,” followed by whatever might pop into her brain at any given moment. One story, for example, is an admission of keeping running shoes...

There’s a very specific brand of broad silliness that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have championed across comedies like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor. Their shows exist in a fluid reality where it feels like anything is possible.
Meredith Scardino worked on the latter of these two series and her original creation, Girls5Eva, is very much cut from the same absurdist cloth. The music industry lampoon received plenty of attention when it first premiered on Peacock, only to fade away like a forgotten pop music group. It’s exciting that Netflix has rescued the effort, which is just as hilarious as ever, yet Girls5Eva still feels destined to resonate with a niche crowd instead of becoming the streaming service’s next big hit. This comedy can hit the right notes, but it’s not going to pack a stadium full of fans.

Girls5eva has been picked up by Netflix for season three, in a move that its stars and creator are viewing as a chance to find new audiences and continue telling the story of the revived pop group.
“It’s a relief. I’m so grateful,” said Sara Bareilles, one of the stars of the musical comedy, “We had so much fun making the season and getting to move platforms and broaden our audience, getting a chance to continue the story of these women. When we left it at season two, we were all sort of living in the question of ‘Are we going to get to be with them again?’ and we just had such a beautiful experience making the show.”

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

Two years after ending its two-year run on Peacock — and subsequently being rescued by Netflix — Meredith Scardino’s musical comedy “Girls5Eva” is ready for its new streaming home. Seasons 1 and 2 are set to move from Peacock to Netflix in March, and they’ll be accompanied by the all-new Season 3, which dropped its first trailer on Thursday.
Hailing from executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, “Girls5Eva” follows an eponymous singing group that achieved pop superstardom in the 1990s before engaging in a struggle-filled reunion in the present day. Led by a cast that includes music and Broadway veterans Sara Bareilles and Renée Elise Goldsberry, the show earned a passionate fanbase for its irreverent humor and catchy songs. What it didn’t earn on Peacock, was much of an audience.

It’s been just over a year since “Girls5Eva” announced its third season pickup at Netflix after being canceled at Peacock. And star Sara Bareilles said they’re hoping for the show to score an “early” 2024 debut at its new streaming home.
“Postproduction is well underway,” she told TheWrap Tuesday, confirming reports from costar Paula Pell that Season 3 had completed filming ahead of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes this summer.
“I’m going in for my Adr sessions in the next couple weeks, and I know that our creatives are locking the edits and they’re working on sound mix and all that stuff,” Bareilles continued. “All of that had stopped, so there was a pretty deep interruption of that flow. So we’re hoping for early next year, but we don’t have an actual date yet.”

The Writers Guild of America East is petitioning employers to ensure that protections are in place for journalists as AI technology develops.
The petition, signed by more than 1,000 members, calls for “immediate, good faith negotiations on AI,” including outside of scheduled contract bargaining, as well as “a guarantee that AI protections will be on the table in future bargaining.”
The petition also calls on employers to “publicly commit to never replacing a human worker with an AI tool,” something that has been a big concern among journalists, as well as film and TV writers in their recent strike.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order to try to establish protections for safety and security around AI, as well as an effort to mitigate its displacement of workers. But the labor provisions are limited to creating a set of best practices and principles, as further steps to preserve jobs likely would take congressional action.

Comedy, as it turns out, is quite subjective. Folks have some strong opinions about what does and does not make them laugh. Thankfully, strong opinions are exactly what we’re looking for.
The 21st century has been particularly kind to comedy on TV, so we wanted to honor that with not one but two lists of the best comedy TV shows of 2000s. Below you can find our choices for the best American shows (and a Canadian show or two popular enough with American audiences to be considered eligible). A new report says Tina Fey is being courted to take over “Saturday Night Live” for Lorne Michaels — but an NBC spokesperson is now denying such claims.
According to a source, per The New York Post, the actress and comedian is being considered to take Michaels’ current position as executive producer when the “SNL” creator, 78, eventually departs.
Though Michaels, who created the popular weekly comedy series back in 1975, hasn’t formally announced a departure, he previously spoke about leaving the show after “its 50th anniversary, which is in three years,” he told Gayle King on “CBS Mornings” in December 2021. “I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”

Earth gets rebooted after a foiled alien attack leads to a second chance for humanity — if new President Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon) can get out of his own way on Netflix’s new adult animated comedy, “Mulligan.” It’s from the creative minds behind “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “30 Rock” — co-showrunners Robert Carlock and Sam Means and executive producer Tina Fey — who are well-versed in strange second chances and unpredictable relationships.
“Mulligan” concerns a group of rag-tag survivors, including Mulligan (Nat Faxon), a dopey everyman from Boston; beauty queen Lucy (Chrissy Teigen), who has a mid-invasion fling with Matty and becomes First Lady; conniving Vice President Cartwright Lamarr (Dana Carvey); historian Simon Prioleu (Sam Richardson); military super scientist Dr. Farrah Braun (Fey); and imprisoned alien general Axatrax (Phil Lamarr).

Mulligan is an animation series created by Robert Carlock and Sam Means.
A hilarious animated series with adult characters very full of short-temper, meanness and irony not too contained. Mulligan is one of those series that, with a silly plot, is dedicated to dishing out “justice and humor” everywhere with tons of irony, parodies and metaphorical slapstick for everyone and everything.
Remember when the Simpsons were outstanding, and Homer would just blurt out whatever came into his head? It gave rise to a whole saga of series from which Mulligan openly drinks, that animation for adults that has given such good results and that is still in great shape, with its mix of quick humor, intelligent and full of irony.
A parody of absolutely everything that comes its way, especially politics.
Well, as I said, justice and humor.

The ninth annual SeriesFest, an annual television-centric event held in Denver, kicks off Friday with a slightly abbreviated schedule in light of the writers strike. Per WGA rules, writers are not allowed to make “promotional appearances” at film festivals or at “For Your Consideration” Emmy events. Already, a number of FYC showcases have either been canceled, or continued on but with just a screening, no panel, due to the strike.
SeriesFest becomes the first festival to be impacted by the strike. This year’s event takes place from May 5 to May 10, which now happens to coincide with the early days of the strike. As a result, showrunners have opted out of a handful of panels, while screenings of many new and returning shows will now take place without talent/showrunner Q&As. It could be an early peak at the pivot that may have to take place with other upcoming festivals,...

Do you ever sit and think about the early days of the United States of America when the office of the presidency was typically held by whoever was the greatest war hero at the time, and how that's a truly banana-pants line of thinking? Well, that's kind of the premise behind "Mulligan," the new adult animation series heading to Netflix from "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" co-creator Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means.
The show has been in the works since 2020, and centers on Earth after aliens invade (and destroy) most of the planet. Now, it's up to the survivors to rebuild society, providing humanity a second chance to do things better than were done before or watch as history repeats itself and humanity turns to crap again.
In the first of many baffling decisions, working-class Bostonian Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon) is named the new leader after putting an end to the invasion.

All 7 seasons of the NBC comedy 30 Rock are available to binge on Hulu. Tina Fey created the show inspired by her experiences on Saturday Night Live, though the world of Tgs was wilder than SNL. 30 Rock was both a Hollywood industry satire and a universally relatable workplace comedy with career and dating foibles.

ABC is in negotiations with Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to headline Motherland, a comedy pilot based on the British series. Karan Soni (Deadpool franchise) has been tapped for a lead in the project, from writer Julieanne Smolinski, Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s Merman Television, Paul Feig’s Feigco Entertainment, Lionsgate and ABC Signature. Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) has come on board to direct.
Written by Smolinski, Motherland centers on Julia (the role Kemper has been in talks for over the past several weeks), a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin (Soni) and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time. This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief…then realized it’s Sunday.

Can you imagine a world without "The Dana Carvey Show?" To be fair, you probably can, as the ABC series only lasted for a meager eight episodes during the spring of 1996. While the show itself has gained a cult status over the decades, the real legacy of the series isn't about the show's impact on pop culture, but rather its bringing together of talent that would soon go on to impact pop culture.
Consider this staggering list of names involved: Robert Smigel, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Spike Feresten (writer for David Letterman and "Seinfeld"), Robert Carlock (future showrunner of "30 Rock"), Dino Stamatopoulos (future writer of "Community" and Starburns himself) and Charlie Kaufman were all among the people helping Carvey bring his surreal sketch comedy show to the small screen.

If you've seen Rose McIver or Utkarsh Ambudkar on Stephen Colbert, CBS Mornings, or various other stops on the press circuit lately, it's because they are now the stars of a big TV show in Ghosts.
Adapted from a British TV show by Joe Port, many viewers might not have had a lot of hope for the show considering the mixed history of British TV spin-offs and the fact that it was dumped onto network TV rather than an edgier network.
However, the show was network television's highest-rated new comedy last year.
It has also continued to build its audience after its first season success: Variety reported that Ghosts was the network's top comedy on both live viewing and the Paramount Plus streaming site, and the show has helped lift the slate of CBS sitcoms above the competition.
But why has this show broken through from such a disadvantaged start?...

It’s de rigeur now when a show is canceled: Disappointed studio execs and producers promise fans that they’ll shop their orphaned series to other outlets. Of course, most of the time, nothing happens — after all, who wants to pick up a show that no one was watching in the first place? But sometimes, the stars align: In the case of “Cobra Kai,” for example, Netflix was able to nab that show when YouTube got out of the scripted originals business, and turn it into a monster hit.
Netflix has picked up several canceled series over the years (up next: NBC’s “Manifest”). But the case of “Girls5eva” is a bit unique. The Universal TV comedy aired for two seasons on sister Peacock to raves from TV critics — but crickets in the general population. That’s despite the rapid-fire pop-culture infused comedy and music at the heart of the show,...

Nothing lasts 5eva. On Thursday, news broke that Peacock series “Girls5eva” is heading to Netflix for Season 3. The first two seasons of the Tina Fey-Robert Carlock comedy will be available on both Peacock and Netflix.
The reality is that “Girls5eva” was canceled by Peacock sometime after Season 2 concluded in June, two people with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire. The news just never went public, and negotiations between studio Universal Television and Netflix already were underway.
Despite being beloved by both Peacock execs and critics (Season 1 is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 percent score; Season 2 is “certified fresh” at 95 percent), “Girls5eva” was a consistent underperformer, we’re told.
That led to Peacock passing on a third season, a “business decision,” we’re told. In the old days, that would be a death sentence for a show. These are not the old days, and so it was...
