“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

Over four nights in March, Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase at SXSW brought the stars of tomorrow to Austin’s famed Acl Live at the Moody Theater. Ahead of the second night’s bill, which was topped by música mexicana superstar Peso Pluma, lines of fans stretched for blocks, including, reportedly, the longest line in SXSW history. Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase has brought an array of genres to the Moody Theater in Austin over four nights, from hip-hop to música mexicana, urbano to Afrobeats, and beyond. The final night was all about guitars, bringing together acts from indie rock, country, and more who love the instrument. And for Faye Webster, that instrument is pedal steel guitar in particular.

Faye Webster is kicking my ass at tennis. We’re at the Altadena Town & Country Club in L.A. on a late-January afternoon, playing a very loose set amid pouring rain. One of us is really good; the other (me) has never picked up a racket in her life. But even though I’m pathetically outmatched, Webster is being really sweet about it, cheering from her side of the court whenever I manage to make contact with the heavy, soaking-wet ball (which is almost never).

When singer-songwriter Faye Webster needs an escape, she seeks it at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Her attendance is usually a last-minute decision—hence being underdressed, per the title of her fifth studio album, Underdressed at the Symphony.
“I’m asleep in the moment you’re holding my head/But I want to remember I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” Webster mutters on the opening track, “Thinking About You.” She details her most intimate experiences with others in this manner throughout the album, finding herself seeking them out but lacking the desire to fully engage with them.
Similarly, “But Not Kiss” places Webster, who otherwise might seem uncertain about what she wants, in an extremely specific form of longing: “I want to see you in my dreams but then forget/We’re meant to be but not yet/You’re all that I have but can’t get.” She knows what she wants,...

Faye Webster measures love by what is lost. She loses track of time from endless daydreaming, she loses her sense of self when reminiscing over an ex. On 2019’s “What Used To Be Mine,” she doesn’t just miss a former lover, but the places that defined their relationship. The Atlanta singer-songwriter has always captured romance in this way: as a force that shapes our ambient mode of existence. It’s fitting that her music favors a lounging-around easiness; her blend of soft rock and indie country is an ideal...

Faye Webster continues to preview her upcoming LP Undressed at the Symphony with the new song “Feeling Good Today.”
The 90-second track — which was accompanied by a video shot by Pooneh Ghana and starring TikToker Lili Hayes, here wearing a Webster mask — finds the Atlanta singer-songwriter exploring the mundanity of day-to-day life through a warbling Vocoder.
“I’m gonna see my brother / He’s got a new girl / But he’s good at making time for me,” Webster sings. “I got paid yesterday / I’ll probably buy something dumb / Because I am pretty childish.

Faye Webster and Lil Yachty have teamed up for “Lego Ring,” a whimsical new track from Webster’s upcoming album Underdressed at the Symphony.
The video below features the Atlanta musicians — who have been friends since middle school — sitting on a couch and debating which of Webster’s songs to play à la Guitar Hero. Yachty passes on the Atlanta Millionaires Club track “Jonny,” as well as songs from 2021’s I Know I’m Funny haha: “Sometimes,” “In a Good Way,” and “Kind Of.”

Faye Webster has announced her new album, Underdressed at the Symphony, out March 1st via Secretly Canadian. As a preview, the CoSign alum has shared her new single, “Lego Ring” featuring Lil Yachty. Stream it below.
Recorded at Sonic Ranch Studios in Texas with Webster’s longtime band, Underdressed at the Symphony explores emotional intimacy and how desire and passion are often at odds with comfort, understanding, and platonic love. Pre-orders are ongoing.
On “Lego Ring,” Webster’s airy vocals come together with Yachty’s warble as she sings, “I know what I like/ I know what I want/ But you know I kinda need.” Yachty responds, “You and me are like a dream team/ Always together like string beans.”
In the visual treatment, directed by Kyle Ng of Braindead Studios, the duo performs the song while playing a video game called Faye Webster’s Singsongrama, which is similar to Rock Band.

Faye Webster is back with a new song called “Lifetime.” Check it out below via Secretly Canadian.
With little more than acoustic guitar, twinkling piano, and sparse drums to keep the slow-moving beat, “Lifetime” stretches out over five minutes as Webster sings a peaceful song of devotion. “Can’t imagine me before you in a lifetime,” she croons, repeating those last three words over and over. In the track’s accompanying video, directed by Kyle Ng of Brain Dead, we see what the Atlanta songwriter might look like after said lifetime.
“Lifetime” follows Webster’s June single “But Not Kiss,” an equally arresting — if not marginally louder — look at whatever era follows 2021’s I Know I’m Funny haha. In October, our former Artist of the Month will embark on a North American tour (get tickets here). Additionally, tickets to Webster’s 2024 European tour are on sale through Viagogo.

Faye Webster has returned with “But Not Kiss,” her first new single in two years, and has unveiled dates for a 2023 headlining tour. Watch the music video for the new song and check out the full list of dates below.
Built around an intimate, thumb-strummed electric guitar, “But Not Kiss” is clad with all of Webster’s signature touches, from the pedal steel to the piano accents to the dynamic swells. Singing about a tender-yet-complicated love, her airy croon wrangles together a whirlwind of emotions and presents them in a perfectly delicate and tactful setting.
“I think it could be a really romantic song or a really anti-romantic song,” Webster explained in a statement. “It’s something I’ve looked for but struggled to find in other love songs, for them to describe this conflict or contradiction.”
Webster is hitting the road in North America this fall, kicking off in DC in October.

When Faye Webster reached into her stocking last Christmas, she found a yo-yo. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter didn’t think much of it, except for the fact that she could take it to visit her relatives in the small town of Longview, Texas. “I was like, ‘I’m going to be bored!'” Webster says. “So I just started playing.”
The yo-yo has now become part of Webster’s career; she performs with it onstage and sells a custom version called “The Pigeon.” The merch is named after a track from Webster’s latest album,...
