Nathan Drake and Lara Croft could be Hollywood’s go-to treasure hunters until someone else comes along because, according to Nicolas Cage, a National Treasure 3 is not happening. Cage played treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates in Disney’s 2004 action-adventure romp, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets mapping a path to theaters in 2007.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Cage said, “No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”
Cage’s verbal mousetrap is quite telling of the actor’s tolerance for how Disney conducts its business. Cage’s comment may refer to how Disney fumbled the bag with its sequel series National Treasure: Edge of History. The adventure series starring Lisette Olivera, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was canceled after one season despite having ties to the Cage-led feature films.

After just one season, Disney+ has pulled the plug on the National Treasure TV show.

Olivera is joined by Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker and Lyndon Smith, while Justin Bartha, who portrayed Riley Poole in the film franchise along Cage, reprised his role as a special guest.”

It looks like the "National Treasure" universe wasn't quite ready to expand. Deadline is reporting that the Disney+ spin-off series "National Treasure: Edge of History" has been cancelled after just one season. Guest stars like Harvey Keitel, Justin Bartha, and franchise newbie Catherine Zeta-Jones apparently weren't enough to save the tie-in series, which arrived a full 15 years after the second film in the Nicolas Cage-led franchise.
"National Treasure: Edge of History" followed Jess (Lisette Olivera), a second-generation treasure-keeper and first-generation Mexican-American immigrant who's tasked with continuing her father's legacy. The first season followed a mystery related to a necklace Jess inherited from her father, one that kickstarts an adventure with ties to secret societies, the Spanish Inquisition, the Battle of the Alamo, and much more. The teen-centric show aimed to capture a younger generation of fans, but with the news of its cancellation, one wonders if it came a...

The series boasted a heavyweight cast, including Hollywood veterans like Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel. The series also starred several actors, including Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
“Edge of History” was missing the pivotal presence of Cage, but the creators, the Wibberleys, were hoping to bolster many more seasons which would have eventually featured the iconic actor.

Disney+ is calling off the hunt for more treasure.
The streamer has canceled its series National Treasure: Edge of History after a single season. The news comes more than two months after the 10-episode series wrapped in early February.
The show premiered in December 2022. Per usual with streaming series, detailed viewing figures aren’t available for Edge of History. It made Nielsen’s streaming rankings once during its run, tying for ninth place among original series for the week of Jan. 16-22. “National Treasure: Edge of History” has been canceled at Disney+ after one season, Variety has confirmed.
Based on the “National Treasure” film franchise, Disney’s TV adaptation followed treasure hunter Jess Venezuela. Lisette Olivera, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, and Lyndon Smith were among the cast.
In the season one finale, which aired in February, co-creators Marianne and Cormac Wibberley (who also wrote the first two films) closed the first installment unveiling a “National Treasure” twist. Jacob Vargas, Lisette Olivera, and Jake Austin Walker in Disney+’s ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 10
The season one finale of Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History ties up all the treasure-hunting loose ends while dangling the possibility of where season two could go if the streaming service picks up the drama. Episode 10, “Treasure Protectors,” picks up the action right where episode nine ended, with Agent Hendricks (Armando Riesco) having just stabbed Agent Ross (Lyndon Smith) with a sword. We, the audience, now know he’s Salazar – the man we’ve heard about all season but whose identity has just been revealed.
When Billie (Catherine Zetta-Jones) questions Salazar about why he’s there, Rafael (Jacob Vargas) chimes in and reminds her that Salazar is the one who killed her brother. But, of course, Salazar claims Rafael is a liar.
After loading the boat, they set off to find the treasure.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Treasure Protectors,” the season finale of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
In the first “National Treasure” movie, Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates justifies stealing the Declaration of Independence by telling the authorities he is a treasure protector — but that was so 2004.
In the Disney+ spinoff series “National Treasure: Edge of History,” the latest threat to this country’s lost history is from treasure destroyers, specifically a group known as Cras Est Nostrum. This faction hunts down and destroys treasure to avoid the messy business of having to rewrite history.
Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her specific brand of brute force has been the group’s muscle this season in pursuing Montezuma’s Treasure, which she calls a “political powderkeg” if found. And in this week’s season finale, she deciphers the final clue by kidnapping Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her...

Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole in the “National Treasure” series, entered the ongoing TV spin-off “National Treasure: Edge Of History” and has upped the stakes for the third film.
Fans hanging onto every word Poole said during the episode did not miss the obvious reference to “page 47” from the presidents’ secret book from “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”. In that film, the president asks Ben Gates (Nicholas Cage) to advise him on a mystery mentioned on Page 47 in the book.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Charlotte,” the fourth episode of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
Rest assured, “National Treasure” fans: Justin Bartha knows some of you were hesitant to embrace Disney+’s new spin-off series “Edge of History.” He was too.
After all, it’s been 15 years since its sequel, “National Treasure: Books of Secrets,” hit theaters in 2007, marking the last time audiences spent time with Bartha’s Riley Poole.
The tech-savvy, sarcastic right hand of Nicolas Cage’s treasure-hunting historian Ben Gates remains one of the defining roles of Bartha’s career, alongside “The Hangover.” It’s also the only one he can watch with his daughters, so fans have them to thank for chipping away at his initial skepticism to guest star in the series’ fourth episode.

Antonio Cipriano, Zuri Reed, Lisette Olivera, and Jake Austin Walker in ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 3 (Disney/Brian Roedel)
Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History episode two ended with a very shocked and confused Jess (Lisette Olivera) learning her mother was the author of an unpublished academic paper that provided Liam’s (Jake Austin Walker) dad with information on rare artifacts. Episode three opens with Jess confirming she now believes her mom knew about the treasure.
Jess, Tasha (Zuri Reed), and the gang’s newest member, Liam, show up at Ethan’s place to use Oren’s (Antonio Cipriano) old camcorder. They watch a tape and Jess acts as interpreter, explaining her mom is delivering a lecture about women fleeing as war broke out. They brought with them sacred objects so their history would be preserved.
One brave woman, Malinche, risked her life to save the treasure from the Conquistadors.

On December 14, the search officially began for a priceless — and still unexplained — artifact in the first two episodes of Disney+‘s National Treasure: Edge of History. And while there is still much to be revealed about the aforementioned item that wound up in the hands of nascent treasure hunter Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera) and her crew, we do know a few things about what’s up. First is that Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ blonde and blunt scavenger Billie may not be all bad. She’s a mean one, for sure. But maybe there’s a reason? And secondly, even the cast was curious about the adventure awaiting them when they signed on to this serialized extension of the beloved Nicolas Cage movie franchise. “I was so intrigued by who Jess was and how she operates in the world,” offers Olivera, hinting that as the action proceeds, “she grows into becoming this, like,...

Episode two of Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History starts off right where episode one left off. Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) has kidnapped Oren (Antonio Cipriano), and when he hears Jess’s voice he tries to leave. Tasha (Zuri Reed) joins the conversation and warns Billie she’s going to hack her devices, but Billie is one step ahead of her and has put a firewall on Tasha’s laptop. Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History season one episode one, “I’m a Ghost,” introduces the key players in this series spinoff of the popular National Treasure films. But before we meet the new batch of treasure hunters, we pop back in time to 2001.
National Treasure‘s Harvey Keitel reprises his role as Peter Sadusky and is shown recording a message, instructing whoever he’s making it for to only listen to the tape when no one’s around.
Speaking into the recorder, Peter asks if they remember the stories he used to tell them about gold and libraries from Emperor Montezuma’s palaces. We’re treated to a reenactment of a battle that took place in 1519 as Peter describes what went down. Although many people assumed the treasure was a myth, Peter reveals...

“National Treasure: Edge of History” is a treat for the fans of the original Nicholas Cage film series. It’s a bona-fide thriller that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. The series takes its viewers on quest anyone with love for history to jump on into. But “Edge of History” comes with an added advantage – “It is about a non-white America. It is about an America that is now what it is,” says Mira Nair, an Executive Producer on the show. Speaking exclusively to Et Canada, Nair explains that the show goes beyond quintessential America and its history and blurs boundaries and ethnicities.
“It (“National Treasure: Edge of History”) is the story of a Mexican girl who was not documented and can completely uncover (mysteries)… It’s about intelligence, really, which I love. The fact that it was really a non-white universe – her friends, who are her family,...

According to Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones is “terrifying” without trying. That’s the one rare piece of acting advice the Chicago alum’s husband has given her, and it’s advice she’s applied to her latest role in National Treasure: Edge of History. “We never give any advice as actors,” Zeta-Jones tells us. “We never read the scripts. We just go off to work and do our own thing. But once, [Douglas] said to me, ’cause I was playing a [villain] role, ‘Just remember, honey, you don’t have to do much.’ I went, ‘What do you mean?’ And he goes, ‘You’re terrifying when you do nothing.'” The Oscar winner plays the villainous black-market antiquities dealer Billie in National Treasure: Edge of History, Disney+’s spinoff series of the Nicolas Cage-led hit movie franchise. The series follows Jess (Lisette Olivera), an undocumented 22-year-old whose wit is her superpower,...

The legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer helped to usher Disney into the franchise age with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, a gung-ho historical epic chock full of charm that helped the House of Mouse keep up with the likes of “The Matrix” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The king of the high-concept blockbuster is all about what he once referred to as “the transportation business. We transport audiences from one place to another,” and the “National Treasure” movies, starring Nicolas Cage, are a perfect example of his ethos, albeit on a more family-friendly ethos than the work of his Don Simpson days.

The joy of Disney’s “National Treasure” franchise lies in its precise balance of reverence and irreverence. For all the choreographed mayhem, cheeky ahistoricity, and gross mishandling of antiquities, the beloved 2004 film and its 2007 sequel are fundamentally in awe of history, respectful of legacy, and devoted to family.
Despite its sturdy plot mechanics, broad audience appeal and evergreen themes, the “National Treasure” franchise is lacking in currency. Fifteen years have passed since the last entry, a span of years in which the holiday tentpole has evolved, as has Nicolas Cage, who is now more drawn to auteurist grindhouse indies than Jerry Bruckheimer blockbusters. With the increasingly narrow odds of a film to complete a trilogy, the only way to save “National Treasure” from becoming a dusty relic itself was to detonate it and build something new from the ruins.

“You notice things no one else would notice” is a compliment paid more than once to Jess (Lisette Olivera), the heroine of National Treasure: Edge of History. It’s ostensibly what makes her the ideal spiritual successor to Ben Franklin Gates — the protagonist played in the franchise’s two previous big-screen entries by Nicolas Cage, who does not appear here.
In practice, though, it feels more like the show’s way of insisting that Jess is more interesting than the script actually allows her to be, and its excuse for papering over the carelessness of its mysteries. Jess may have an eye for detail, but her Disney+ series has no patience for them — it’s less an intricately crafted puzzle than a jumble of half-broken odds and ends.

Nicolas Cage has admitted that he spent his childhood convinced he was an alien.

“My father told me he felt like he had to introduce himself to me because I was such an alien,” he told Rampstyle magazine.
“I was shocked the day I went to the doctor’s office as a child and I found out that I had normal organs and a normal skeleton because I was certain I was from another planet.”

Disney+ is opening up a new chapter in the National Treasure franchise with National Treasure: Edge of History, premiering on December 14, 2022. The series introduces a new group of treasure hunters, with a few familiar faces from the National Treasure films popping in in guest starring roles in season one.
National Treasure: Edge of History was created by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, writers of both National Treasure films – 2004’s National Treasure and 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets – and follows the hunt for a centuries-old lost Pan-American treasure. National Treasure: Edge of History doesn’t have Nicolas Cage‘s gravely voice declaring he’s “going to steal the Declaration of Independence,” but it does bring fans back into the familiar fold of the franchise’s treasure hunting. Lisette Olivera leads the spinoff series as Jess Valenzuela, the de facto Ben Gates, with Zuri Reed‘s Tasha, Antonio Cipriano‘s Oren, and Jordan Rodrigues‘s Ethan playing her found family and fellow treasure hunters. The foursome, friends since elementary school, will face off with Catherine Zeta-Jones‘ villainous artifacts dealer Billie in the historical fiction/action series, premiering December 14 on Disney+. Justin Bartha reprises his role as fan-favorite Riley Poole in the show. Oren, Tasha, and Ethan jointly represent Riley and Abigail (played by Diane Kruger in the films), but Cipriano tells us Oren is closest in character to Riley. For the last 15 years, a vocal group of fans has clamored for the schlocky, B-movie thrills of "National Treasure" to be brought to a satisfying, trilogy-ending conclusion with a third big-screen blockbuster. Released in the early aughts and unabashedly of its time (for better and worse), the Nicolas Cage-starring duology released during a very specific and now-nostalgic moment in the industry: when an A-list actor's gloriously unhinged energy, a dash of adventure pulp, and an easily-marketable sales pitch — we're going to steal the Declaration of Independence! — could catapult a film and its successor to upwards of 800 million in global earnings at the box office. In the years since, however, prospects of a threequel have faded right alongside general audience interest in original, star-driven blockbusters that remain utterly unconnected from established IP.

2022 was a big year for Disney+, featuring Marvel hits like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk: Attorney-at-Law and Star Wars blockbusters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor. In the last month of the year, however, the streamer is switching things up a bit. Disney+’s list of new releases of December 2022 is a smooth, subdued ride with no franchise tentpoles to be found.
The closest thing Disney+ has this month to a big TV original is National Treasure: Edge of History on Dec. 9. A spinoff of the Nicolas Cage film series, this show will follow Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera) as she searches for a centuries-old treasure.
Over on the movie side of things, there are a handful of intriguing options, though nothing rising to the Marvel or Star Wars occasion. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again is an animated film that will continue the story from the trilogy of films and it premieres on Dec.

Disney is generally one of the companies people think of when it comes to the holiday season, and the streaming service certainly plays it up. Disney+ regularly has a section devoted to holiday content, that this year will certainly highlight their new spinoff series “The Santa Clauses,” as well as films like “Home Alone.”
But if you’re looking to take a break from the Yule log Disney+ also plans to unveil their latest series based on a popular film franchise. “National Treasure: Edge of History” translates the 2004 feature, starring Nicolas Cage and Diane Kruger, for the television landscape. The original series saw Cage playing a man looking for a secret treasure connected to the Declaration of Independence. The new series follows a young woman as she receives a centuries-old clue that could be connected to her dead father. There’s a powerhouse of talent in front of and behind the series,...

There were a lot of trailers revealed at the recent D23 Expo, but one we missed was the new trailer for National Treasure: Edge of History. The upcoming Disney+ spinoff of the big screen franchise may be lacking Nicolas Cage, but it does look like it will offer up the same type of globe-trotting treasure hunts audiences loved in the first two movies.
National Treasure: Edge of History focuses on a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Olivera), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure. Justin Bartha will also be reprising his character of Riley Poole in a guest-starring role. Poole appeared in the two National Treasure movies as a computer expert and a friend to Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Gates. Also returning is Harvey Keitel as FBI Special Agent Peter Sadusky,...

"What if I told you everything you know about your Dad is a lie?" Disney has revealed a full official trailer for National Treasure: Edge of History - a new series continuing the two beloved National Treasure movies of 2004 & 2007. I'm big fans of both - which had Nicolas Cage as treasure hunter Benjamin Gates, who isn't back for this one. The new series instead is told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old Dreamer who, with her diverse group of friends, sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and find lost treasure. Lisette Olivera stars as Jess, with a cast including Lyndon Smith, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan, plus Justin Bartha & Harvey Keitel from the films. Catherine Zeta-Jones also stars as the villain, a badass billionaire, black-market antiquities expert. This still looks like a...
