It’s been a whole 10 years since we last got a new album from Marnie Stern, but that changes this fall: The guitar wiz has announced her next LP, aptly titled The Comeback Kid, which is out November 3rd via Joyful Noise Recordings. Along with the news, she’s shared its lead single “Plain Speak.”
In the years since her last LP The Chronicles of Marnia, Stern’s kept herself busy around the clock by raising two kids and playing in The 8G Band on The Late Show with Seth Meyers. Thankfully, the time away from the studio didn’t dim the spark that put her on the map in the late 2000s, as she naturally re-adopted her trademark finger-tapped guitar shredding and whimsical math rock melodies.
“When I would think, ‘Oh, is that too, too weird?’ I’d remember I’m allowed to do whatever I want! This is mine.

Richard Lloyd, by way of credentials, was one of the guitarists on Television’s Marquee Moon (Tom Verlaine was the other), which is just about the best guitar album to come out of the original New York Cbgb’s scene. Lloyd, who’s 64, doesn’t gig much these days, but he does teach guitar. It’s punk rock at Champagne prices — a hundred bucks per hourlong lesson — but it’s something else, too. You take a guitar lesson because you want to learn to play. You take a guitar lesson from Richard Lloyd because you hope he’ll reveal whatever magic he used to conjure those magnificent, spiraling Marquee Moon solos.About a week after I scheduled time with Lloyd via the email address on his website, I took the train to his fifth-floor Inwood walk-up. (He isn’t the only name-brand, high-cred option available to New York’s aspiring guitar heroes.

Just as the new fourth season of "Portlandia" was gearing up, Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen were making the rounds at South By Southwest. Armisen had only recently been named as the house band leader for "Late Night with Seth Myers," reuniting the two "Saturday Night Live" cohorts for another late-night adventure. A different reunion may run across the minds of Sleater-Kinney fans, who saw video of the band back together playing "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" with Neil Young last fall. After our interview at SXSW, Brownstein didn't indicate if the trio was set to come together again. But that doesn't mean she isn't playing music... As another new ep of "Portlandia" rolls out tonight, here are 10 fun facts that came out of our interview to keep in mind. 1. Apparently, Armisen and Brownstein are incapable of getting sick of each other. Plus, "We don't see each other all the time,...

Avant-garde Atlanta punk act Deerhunter has announced a new record. Monomania is out May 7 and was recorded by Nicholas Vernhes (Spoon, Marnie Stern, Animal Collective) and Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox in Brooklyn earlier this year. Described rather obliquely as a “mystery disc of nocturnal garage” and “fog machine/leather/neon,” the record is the band’s fifth full-length, the last being 2010’s Halcyon Digest. A full tracklist is below, along with the album’s neon-centric artwork. Deerhunter, Monomania Neon Junkyard Leather Jacket II The Missing Pensacola Dream Captain Blue Agent T.H.M. Sleepwalking Back To The Middle ...

Babes who can shred need love too. At least, Marnie Stern does. Her record label, Kill Rock Stars, is offering fans a chance to win an all-expenses-paid date with the guitar goddess around the March 19 release of her new record, The Chronicles Of Marnia. There are some criteria, though: It’s open to dudes only (sorry, ladies). Winners must like Law And Order, cute Jewish girls, and petting dogs while eating chicken wings. The winner must also live in New York, have a good sense of humor, and be open-minded about dating someone who tours frequently. Also, no drug ...

Marnie Stern, the rocker known for her frantic and virtuosic guitar work, will release her fourth studio album, the Narnia-alluding The Chronicles Of Marnia, on March, 19, 2013 via Kill Rock Stars. After her old drummer Zach Hill took up with the confrontational and now label-less Death Grips, Stern looked to Oneida's Kid Millions to pick up the sticks. Stern describes the follow-up to her self-titled 2010 release as a more focused album with clearer vocal tracks and "fewer guitar parts," which is a pretty big bummer considering her guitar playing is so boss. The album's first single ...

The end of 2010 is just about upon us, which means that cultural analyst types will be making attempts to compile the best moments, releases and events of the year that was. The film world takes this very seriously, and the parade of awards shows over the next few months (culminating with the Academy Awards on February 27, 2011). The first big push into the awards season hit on Tuesday (November 30) when the Independent Spirit Awards handed out their nominations. The music world will follow suit tonight (December 1) when the Grammy nominations are announced during a live broadcast that will feature performances by Justin Bieber and Katy Perry and will be hosted by LL Cool J.
But while the music world only has one real big awards show, they should really have their own version of the Independent Spirit Awards. Only indie releases need apply, and like the ISAs (which recognized under-seen but bold films like "Winter's Bone,...

Two years after delivering a 31-word album title, Marnie Stern has gone the more traditional route of a self-titled record. It’s fitting, since Marnie Stern features her most traditional songwriting yet, cramming her mind-exploding guitar work into more accessible structures. Weaving in the best elements of her previous albums—fretboard-tapping flair, frenetic prog-rock drumming from Zach Hill, sneaky time-signature twists—Stern finally sees the forest for the trees: Soaring hooks wax and wane in an intentional emotional flow, and even at her most energetic, she remains poignant and personal. She still occasionally shows off, and there’s plenty of ...

Wednesday night's (March 18) episode of "American Idol" featured perhaps the best musical performances of this season. Ke$ha and 3Oh!3 blew everybody away with the spectacle that was "Blah Blah Blah" and David Cook delivered a soul-filled, extra-loud performance of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash." But the pleasant surprise of the night came care of Orianthi, the former Michael Jackson guitarist who dropped her latest album Believe and scored a hit with "According to You."
Orianthi represents something of an endangered species in today's rock landscape: A truly badass female guitarist. Wednesday night's performance (along with her greater body of work, especially in "Michael Jackson's This Is It") slides her into the list of the 10 best female guitarists of all time. Who else is on there? Glad you asked.
