When you first see The Ghoul in “Fallout,” the most pronounced feature of Walton Goggins’ character is what’s missing. Just under the brim of his weathered cowboy hat and just above his wrinkled upper lip — you know, where his nose should be — there isn’t one. You can see the narrow nostril-dividing tissue, but there are no nostrils to divide. Instead, there’s just an A-shaped hole in his face. A cavity. An absence. So even though it’s obvious the handsome charmer from “Justified” is there, buried under a pound of latex, Prime Video viewers may not realize the physical demands of a role visibly defined by what’s been removed.
“I can’t see so well. I mean, I could see, but your periphery is gone,” Goggins said in an interview with IndieWire. “I’ve got these things over my teeth, so it’s hard to talk.

Tina Fey plays Ms. Norbury in Mean Girls from Paramount Pictures. Photo: Jojo Whilden/Paramount © 2023 Paramount Pictures. Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels have had a relationship for over 25 years. She signed on to Saturday Night Live as a staff writer in the early 90s and the two have worked on numerous projects together since. His production company, Broadway Video, produced 30 Rock. And Michaels has produced tons of movies that Fey has written and/or starred in over the last decade-plus. The original Mean Girls, Baby Mama and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot were all a result of their teamwork. Now, as Mean Girls becomes a musical and is performed on stage, Michaels is once again producing for the writer/actor and he told us this week that it’s been as enjoyable as ever. January is always a challenging month for moviegoing, and this January was particularly tough sledding, what with the impact of the actor’s and writer’s strikes taking a steep toll on an already-limited schedule of theatrical releases.

When Tina Fey realized she wasn’t going to be able to get Amy Poehler to reprise her role as Regina George’s mother in the new Mean Girls movie, she got busy trying to cast the role. And then, she got Busy — Busy Phillips, that is. Fey and Phillips are good friends, so Fey thought she would be a good fit, but she told us she still sought out Poehler’s feedback on the choice. Originally gracing our screens in 2004, the seminal Mean Girls movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, capturing the essence of the early 2000s through its endlessly quotable lines and resonant exploration of millennial teenage angst. Penned by the comedic genius Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and featuring the talents of a youthful Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), the film artfully depicted high school as a tumultuous battleground defined by archetypal cliques.
Fast forward to 2018, and Tina Fey’s original screenplay underwent a theatrical transformation, landing on Broadway as the dazzling Mean Girls: The Musical. However, this triumphant debut was abruptly halted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, bringing the curtains down on its promising run.

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.

You don’t get to plan when you’ll get a life-changing email.
For “Mean Girls” directors Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne, the missive that would ultimately lead to their feature directorial debut came at a particularly tough time for them. Following their well-received, Sundance-premiering short-form TV series “Quarter Life Poetry,” the married couple were deep into developing another TV show, this one about office culture.
“And then the pandemic happened, and offices ceased to exist,” Jayne explained to IndieWire over Zoom. “We were not doing so great. We’re like, ‘What is life right now?’ ‘What’s next?’ And then all of a sudden, this dream email came through with the words ‘Mean Girls’ on it. I got an IV infusion of vitamins and minerals and life!”

Get ready for another “full circle film”, an IP (intellectual property) that began in one medium, was adapted to another, and then returns to that original medium. One of the more recent Broadway trends, along with the “jukebox musical”, has been taking an often beloved feature film and adapting it into a big splashy stage musical. And when they’re big hits, then bring the musical take to the big screen. Back in 2005, The Producers did the big “whip-around” when the musical based on the 1967 Oscar-winning classic played (briefly) at the multiplex. A couple of years later saw the tune-filled return of Hairspray. Just a few weeks ago (it’s still playing in many markets) The Color Purple did much the same,...

It opens with energy and smarts to spare. Picture this: perpetual franchise breakouts Janis and Damian are guiding us (their already captive audience) through what’s to come, care of a fourth wall-breaking, high-energy musical sequence centered around the tantalizingly-named banger “A Cautionary Tale.” This tale is, of course, all about young Cady Heron, an awkward (but endearing) teenager who is about to move from Kenya (not Kentucky) to a suburban high school and get her life utterly rocked by the social mores of American teenagehood.
Somewhere, someone who doesn’t even go here is yelling, “This isn’t your mother’s ‘Mean Girls’!,” but actually, it mostly is, now just with song and dance. When “Mean Girls” went to the stage in 2017, it was aided immeasurably by persistence of vision: Tina Fey, who had initially adapted a non-fiction parenting book to make her 2004 teen hit, also penned the book that would bring the,...

The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

News of the looming apocalypse arrives with a nighttime rap at the door in this all-star thriller from writer-director Sam Esmail, who proved himself a master of depicting an unraveling society in Mr. Robot. Upwardly mobile Brooklynite Amanda Sandford is vacationing at a luxurious Long Island rental house — advertised as a place to “leave the world behind” — with her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) and their teenagers Archie (Charlie Evans) and Rose (Farrah Mackenzie) when the ominous knock cracks their brie-and-cashmere cocoon. (Credit: JoJo Whilden / © Netflix / Courtesy Everett Collection) Outside are two strangers, financier G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la). They claim to own the rental and ask for refuge, explaining they can’t return to their Manhattan home because of a mysterious massive cyberattack. Amanda reluctantly lets them in, and the households uneasily hunker down together as the disaster quickly grows clearer and more terrifying.

Tom Selleck has long since been the face of Blue Bloods, but fans’ favorite part of many episodes in the CBS series is the family dinner scenes. Those family dinners provide a sense of nostalgia or perhaps a reminder to gather one’s own family around the table.
Whatever emotions they evoke in viewers, the Reagan family dinners in every Blue Bloods episode aren’t a coincidence. No matter the chaos that might swirl in the NYPD or a city courthouse that day, the family always gathers for evening meals, with patriarch Frank Reagan (Selleck) at the head of the table and “Pop” Reagan (Len Cariou) opposite him. The dinners have become integral to the show — even if Selleck didn’t think they would survive the pilot.

Initially, the hook of Blue Bloods, at least in the marketing, was the return of TV icon Tom Selleck. But the show has become much more of an ensemble piece than it initially seemed. For instance, Donnie Wahlberg has played Danny Reagan since the CBS drama’s 2010 premiere.
The former New Kids on the Block singer is one of only five actors who’ve been with the show since the beginning. However, he knew the Blue Bloods character meant he was taking a career risk.

Blue Bloods has been on the air since 2010, earning acclaim from critics and viewers alike. The series follows the exploits of the distinguished Reagan family, a group of Irish-American individuals in New York City who have a storied history in law enforcement.
Blue Bloods features a star-studded cast, including Tom Selleck as the family patriarch Frank Reagan, and Donnie Wahlberg as his son, Danny Reagan. One of the show’s primary cast members is Bridget Moynahan as Frank Reagan’s only daughter, Erin Reagan.

Harvey Weinstein was a monster. He was a sexual predator who used his position of power in Hollywood to harass and assault dozens of women. But there was also a system in place that shielded him from repercussions, one that relied on enablers and enforcers who protected Weinstein and allowed him to continue his pattern of exploitation. And there were also plenty of people who preferred to look the other way rather than acknowledge the possibility that Weinstein was a serial sexual abuser.
“She Said,” Maria Schrader’s taut new thriller, may be one of the most important movies to hit Hollywood in decades because it dares to ask about the entertainment business’ culpability in Weinstein’s crimes. And that doesn’t just mean the studio executives and publicists who did Weinstein’s dirty work or who opted to work with him in order to keep winning Oscars and reaping box office rewards.
