NBC is hoping to tap into the magic of classic sitcoms for its new comedy series Something Wicked, which is said to have a “Bewitched-type premise.” As reported by Deadline, June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie) will star in the multi-camera comedy, which is currently in development at NBC. Raphael will also serve as writer and executive producer on the project alongside Dickinson creator Alena Smith. The show is described as “an homage to TV sitcom classics” and will examine the condition of modern adult womanhood and how, even with witchcraft, balancing everything is impossible. Bewitched originally aired on ABC from 1964 to 1972 and starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stevens, a witch who marries an ordinary mortal man and vows to lead the life of a typical suburban housewife. The show was an instant hit with viewers, and in 2002, TVGuide ranked it as No. 50 on the 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time.

After winning two Emmys last week, Allison Janney said something that should be considered a truism but isn't. Explaining her successful return to TV after a sojourn in movies, the 54-year-old told Variety, "Television is a woman's medium."
Since "The West Wing" went off the air eight years ago, Janney has landed a number of supporting character roles in movies, mostly mom parts. Back on TV, however, she won Emmys this year (her fifth and sixth) for stretching to play two very different parts: a woman trying to salvage a difficult marriage in the premium-cable drama "Masters of Sex," and a recovering alcoholic whose daughter and granddaughter have followed in her reckless footsteps on the network sitcom "Mom."
Janney certainly seems to be an example of how television is friendlier to 54-year-old actresses than film is. But is television really "a woman's medium"?

Beautiful Creatures hopes to introduce the world to a new kind of witch and warlock — or casters as they prefer to be called in the world of the Ravenwoods and Duchannes — when the movie adaptation of Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl’s best-selling Ya novel hits theaters Feb. 14. These characters join a long list of pop-culture conjurers including Disney’s many diviners and the spell-spinners of J.K. Rowling’s universe. So when the cast and crew gathered for the world premiere of Creatures last night at Hollywood’s Chinese Theatre, we wanted to find out which witch had charmed their...

New Year's Day brings ten hours of AbFab. That's got to be a good beginning for the year.
News
The Av Club suggests that 2013 will be the year that ends TV as we know it. With DVRs diminishing the importance of time slots, the continued rise of cable and the demise of many era-defining shows like 30 Rock and Breaking Bad, there's a good case to be made that the medium has been putting off a big change for a while.
This feels like a spoiler, Once Upon a Time cast Sonequa Martin-Green — who made her Walking Dead debut in the midseason finale — to play a character named Tarmara. I guess I shouldn't get attached to her The Walking Dead character.
A Downton Abbey parody comic where Bates leads a double-life as a super-spy (and Thomas is obsessed with figuring out why Bates is always locked away polishing silver)? Sign me up.

Starting tomorrow, you can catch up on the entirety of Suits either at USA's website or via OnDemand. I guess I should try to figure out where this business with the can opener began.
Turner Classic Movies will soon have a showcase for some of Johnny Carson's classic celebrity interviews.
TV Guide asks if The X-Factor's mentors are hurting competitors more than they're helping. Inappropriate costumes, bad song choices and unenthusiastic advice are listed as ways the mentors have turned into an obstacle contestants need to overcome.
Brian Dennehy will appear in the final season of The Big C as Cathy's father. Considering how Cathy has had cancer for three seasons and we're only now meeting him, I expect he'll be as awful as the rest of the Jamison clan has turned out to be.

It's depressing when movie franchises as hyped as Spider-Man and Batman destroy box office records without even trying. They're Ok films, but their subjects aren't particularly special or nervy. I like nerve. And I hate when a great, nervy hero fails at the box office, loses his/her credibility, and seems doomed never to hit the big screen again. Today I'm honoring eight fallen (or simply forgotten) heroes who deserve our respect and another chance at blockbuster glory. Go, silver screen racers, go!
1. Speed Racer
Here comes a snark-free statement: The trailer for the 2008 Speed Racer movie was one of the best I've ever seen. Kaleidoscopic, fiery, rambunctious, and just an eye-popping, Tropical Skittle-colored update of the old cartoon. It's too bad the film was horrendous dreck, because I think the glamorously debonair Speed Racer is the perfect character to bridge mainstream blockbuster lovers and sophisticated gay automobile enthusiast. Emile Hirsch,...

I'm always annoyed by people who pretend that award shows are big shams with no integrity because their favorite show/actor/actress is under-rewarded. Here's the thing about award shows: People have to lose. Disappointments are inevitable. It's cowardly to roundly dismiss award shows because there's no one who'll defend their integrity. You get to be the cool one no matter how biased or ill-informed your opinion is. There, I said it.
That said: Man, I am so mad that certain people don't have Emmys! It's "For Your Consideration" season in La, and as we near July's announcement of this year's Emmy nominees, we thought we'd round up 10 screen stars who for some reason have a grand total of zero Emmys. It's a disturbing scenario, and we hope a couple of the snubbees receive compensation at this year's ceremony.
10. Bill Maher
I don't even watch Bill Maher regularly, but I...

The results are in! We asked readers to name their favorite TV characters of all time and thousands responded. This year, for the first time, we weren't just asking about favorite gay TV characters. Folks could vote for characters of either gender - and all persuasions. Of course, this being AfterElton we expected gay characters to figure prominently on this list - and they do - but it is interesting to see what female and straight TV roles also resonated with the AfterElton readership.
Before we get to the actual rankings, here are a few statistics.
First, the top fifty came from a broad range of TV shows. Thirty programs were represented, and the two that made the best showing (Glee and Modern Family) placed only four characters each in the rankings.
Second, female characters nabbed 15 of the top 50 spots, or 30%.
Third, obviously a poll like this favors characters from...

Let me make one thing clear: I really liked the remake of Battlestar Galactica. Seriously, I did. Ok? Now that that's out of the way, here is this week's hypothesis:
TV Remakes Are Bad Mojo.
It's not that I think producing series that have already been made shows a lack of originality or ambition (which I do). It's not that rehashing shows from the past reduces the chances for new; unique ideas to succeed (which it does). It's not even that I intensely dislike almost all of the TV that has ever been remade (before you set your Tweet to stun, see the BSG comment above).
I claim that TV Remakes are bad juju, because I have done the research, and it is simply, conclusively, unquestionably, factually true. Skeptical? Here is a chart laying out the historical success/failure rate of TV Remakes, show by show:

As her cousin Jethro found out many times, Elly May Clampett may look like a "sweet little gal" but she can hold her own in a fight. That's what CBS and Mattell have found out about Donna Douglas, the actress who played Elly May on The Beverly Hillbillies.
Douglas, now 78 years old, filed a lawsuit earlier this year against CBS Consumer Products Inc. and Mattel Inc. for using her likeness and name on a Barbie doll. She contended that the companies needed to get her permission, failed to do so, and she sought at least $75,000.
In court documents, CBS and Mattel said that they didn't need permission because CBS owns the exclusive rights to the character. The Elly May doll and packaging (with Douglas' photo on it) was part of a TV icon doll series, along with Samantha Stevens (Elizabeth Montgomery) from Bewitched...

Did the reality of Sam Weiss live up to what you have been expecting?
Carissa: After hearing the producers talk about him, I was surprised he was just a normal guy. I loved the direction he took in this episode and how he made me laugh. That bit with the museum card had me in stitches. So he has vast generational knowledge only...I hope there is enough there to make him a more prevalent character going forward. Best Sam episode yet.
Sean: Sam had always been portrayed as some mystical and all knowing person, something similar to The Observers. The fact that he turned...

I don't understand why anyone would want to vandalize any statue, but a statue of Andy Taylor and his son Opie? That's just madness! But that's what happened to the statue that TV Land put in Mt. Airy, Nc, with green and red paint. Here's the video from a local news report. TV Land also has statues of Mary Richards in Minneapolis, Bob Hartley in Chicago, Ralph Kramden in New York, Elvis in Hawaii, The Fonz in Milwaukee, and Samantha Stevens in Salem.
I give TV Land a lot of grief for their programming decisions, but I'm impressed they're actually flying someone to Nc to repair the statue.

One of the coolest American sitcoms from the sixties featured a happy housewife with a secret: She possessed magical powers. That fact, combined with a mortal human husband, was a recipe for frequent clashes, especially with the in-laws, brilliantly played by Agnes Moorehead as Endora, and with visits from the delightful Alice Ghostley as Esmerelda. Samantha Stevens has been resurrected by TV Land, who celebrates the launch of the beloved classic .Bewitched. with a marathon of beloved episodes on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st from 11am-7pm Et/Pt. Samantha's husband, Darrin Stevens bring the supernatural to Morning Glory Circle when the series airs in its regularly-scheduled timeslot on the network: weekdays from 5pm-6pm Et/Pt beginning March...
