More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

A growing number of figures from the film and TV industry in the U.K. have signed a letter urging British politicians to support the people of Iran as the country faces global condemnation for executing several of those involved in the wave of protests that erupted last year.
The letter, instigated by British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, calls for members of U.K. parliament to actively campaign for Iran to stop violence against protesters and end all executions, to hold Iran accountable for the “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights,” and to demand that Iran releases all political prisoners.
Among the almost 100 names to have signed the letter, which is still circulating and gathering attention, are Olivia Colman, Martin McDonagh, Jessie Buckley, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Brett Goldstein, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Felicity Jones, George Mackay, Edgar Wright and Hayley Atwell.

It was all leading to this. Throughout season 1 of "Andor," creator Tony Gilroy and his team of writers and directors have intricately weaved a tale of rebellion and revolution right alongside an origin story for Diego Luna's Cassian Andor — one that few fans ever thought would feel necessary, despite being introduced as one of the most fascinating (and mystifying) characters in 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." But rather than deliver yet another formless lump of "content" that hit all the familiar narrative beats without ever giving us anything new, this prequel series took the radical approach of having something meaningful on its mind at all times. In effect, "Andor" pushed the boundaries of what "Star Wars" can truly be ... when placed in the hands of committed filmmakers with the right priorities, that is.
The season 1 finale, titled "Rix Road," ultimately proved to be a microcosm of the...

This post contains spoilers for the entire first season of Andor, which is streaming now on Disney+.
A lot of memorable things happen in the Andor Season One finale. Marva (Fiona Shaw) digitally rises from the dead, as her impassioned, pre-recorded funeral speech inspires the people of Ferrix to rise up against their Imperial oppressors. The riot that ensues is, like so much of Andor, visceral and tactile in a way that very little of Star Wars has been since the original trilogy. At one point, disgraced ex-security guard Syril...

[The following story contains spoilers for Andor episode eight, “Narkina 5.”]
When Toby Haynes took over for creator Tony Gilroy as the director of Andor’s first block of episodes, he, too, was shocked by the bold direction of the show.
Besides heavier themes and a more serious tone, it was extremely important to Gilroy that his series have verisimilitude, and that meant foregoing the franchise’s fondness for prominent Easter eggs. Gilroy even encouraged his collaborators to put away their Star Wars fandom in order to make a show that isn’t hyperaware that it’s Star Wars.
Haynes, who’s a lifelong Star Wars fan, admits there was some concern about his passion for the franchise, but ultimately, he made it clear that he’s a storyteller first.
“[Tony Gilroy] was nervous about how much I love Star Wars, but I always say that I’m a dramatist first and a Star Wars fan second,...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Safe” Season 1 on Netflix, including the ending.]
There isn’t likely to be a “Safe” Season 2, and anyone who’s finished the first season knows why.
Still, in an age of inexplicable renewals and extended limited series, it never hurts to have confirmation, and creator Harlan Coben provided as much as he could — on screen and off. In an interview with Digital Spy that emphasized all the answers to the Netflix murder-mystery were in Season 1, Coben said he wouldn’t “rule out” a Season 2, but later added he doubts it will ever happen.
That’s pretty emphatic as far as creator speculation goes, and Coben speaks even more clearly via the final episode: As a soapy, twist-driven mystery, “Safe” is all wrapped up. Rather than throw in a last-second reveal that upended the answers that had been building over the last few episodes, Coben chose to structure his project as eight episodes and out.
