Josh Hutcherson’s starrer Five Nights at Freddy’s was a surprise hit at the box office last year. The film was released simultaneously on Peacock and in theatres and it still managed to bring fans to theatres to experience the film. It’s an established fact that popular video games rarely make good movies, and so it proves with Five Nights at Freddy’s. Produced by Blumhouse and co-written by game creator Scott Cawthorn, the film should have been a fun little scarefest packed with creepy suspense moments, but instead it’s a drab disappointment thanks to a dismal and messy script that fails to capitalise on the game’s core appeal.

Matthew Lillard is a man of many talents. He can shapeshift into characters of various tints with ease, oscillating between roles that paint him as a loveable clown (such as Shaggy in "Scooby-Doo") and characters that take on more complex, macabre aspirations. Lillard's presence in the "Five Nights at Freddy's" ("Fnaf") movie adaptation is foundational to the core mystery of the film — although his character, William Afton, only appears in a handful of scenes, Afton's legacy feels pronounced in the film's lore-heavy world. As the co-founder and owner of Fazbear Entertainment and Afton Robotics, LLC, Afton always seems to come back in one form or another, fulfilling his troubling vision that dictates the fates of the animatronics that linger in the abandoned spaces brimming with malice.

Normally, to reach the level of cult status, a film has to gain an underground popularity that breathes new life into a project that may have been otherwise overlooked. But when it comes to "Five Nights at Freddy's," the smash hit gateway horror movie had already become a cult film before it was even released. Thanks to the game's immense popularity, viral reaction videos, and numerous spinoffs, books, and toys, there was already a rabid fan base built in to ensure the "FNaF" phenomenon would translate to box office success on the big screen.
On the other hand, Richard Kelly's mind-bending masterwork "Donnie Darko" became a cult sensation that slowly gained momentum due to its complex plot that combined a teen drama with head-scratching surrealism, time travel, and alternate dimensions. There was also a giant bunny named Frank that would have blended right in among the creepy animatronics located inside Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.

A new theory may have revealed the true identity of Mike's father in the Five Nights at Freddy's (Fnaf) movie.
Mike Schmidt is a major character from the Fnaf games, and he is played by Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) in the live-action movie.
In the video game the hit film was based upon, Mike's father is William Afton (aka Fnaf's big bad). However, in the movie, it was revealed that this wasn't the case, leading many to speculate about his dad's identity.

"Five Nights At Freddy's" is a global phenomenon. There is a reason why this particular video game franchise, created by Scott Cawthon, still inspires endless "Let's Play" videos on YouTube, while its expanding lore is subjected to dedicated scrutiny and theory-crafting. So, when a Blumhouse-produced "Fnaf" movie was first announced, fans were over the moon, and for good reason. For one, director Emma Tammi chose to adapt a property that is a treasure trove for eccentric horror storylines that would not only translate well onto the big screen, but would also double as the perfect getaway to horror for younger audiences invested in "Fnaf" to various degrees.
Despite some fandom misgivings about whether the film would be able to successfully capture the essence of everything that makes "Fnaf" so unique, "Five Nights At Freddy's" managed to get almost everything right. The film wastes no time setting up its intriguing premise...

It took eight years for the film to finally hit the big screen, but the live-action adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's" is making bank at the box office, almost guaranteeing a film series for the already massively popular franchise based on the video game of the same name. With 13 games (and more on the way) and over 30 books of lore to choose from, there was no shortage of ideas for the film's story.
And yet, the film wisely chose not to directly copy the lore of the video games, instead crafting a script that borrows from some of the most well-known elements and creating an alternate universe in the process. Since the movie's release, there have been countless reports of adults lamenting the lore-dumping the little humans in their lives have been doing to try to explain the differences between...

The lead character in Blumhouse's Five Nights at Freddy's (Fnaf), Josh Hutcherson's Mike Schmidt, is a bit different from his video game counterpart.
As the first in seemingly more movies to come in the horror game-to-screen franchise, Fnaf naturally covered most of the events of the first game with a few changes. This includes following the Pov of Mike Schmidt, the security guard who gamers originally took control of in 2014.
While the character retained most of his defining traits when jumping to the big screen, there are a few key differences that notably change how the movie adapts to the extensive Five Nights at Freddy's lore.

With only a couple more months left in 2023, will it be the movie year of the toy? Considering the Barbie box office bonanza…probably. That’s especially true if you throw video games into that category. We’ve seen those Super Mario Brothers, a nifty true-life thriller on the making of Tetris, another non-fiction sports flick involving the motor-racing world of Gran Turismo. And now we go from brightly colored pixel ‘shrooms to whirring-blade-fueled horror. Really, a game that elicits fear as you rack up the points? Oh yeah, this one is so popular there has already been at least one cinema rip-off (using those Saturday morning funsters The Banana Splits which this official fan club member did not appreciate). It’s kinda’ how The Sword And The Sorcerer beat Conan to the multiplex by a few weeks in 1982. Well, now here comes the “real deal”, based on the gaming smash,...

The first "Five Nights at Freddy's" game sees players taking on the role of security guard Mike Schmidt, who is tasked with monitoring the strange happenings at a closed-down pizzeria and family entertainment center where the animatronics come to life after dark and attack unsuspecting victims. "FNaF" has since expanded into a full-fledged multi-media franchise, but for those who haven't followed the lore of the games, this is where the general population's knowledge starts and ends. It was expected that the upcoming film adaptation from Blumhouse and Universal would focus on Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson)'s first five nights at the pizzeria, but fans were shocked to see another familiar franchise face in the mix — Vanessa A., played by Elizabeth Lail.
Lail is arguably most well known for her turn as Anna (of "Frozen" fame) on ABC's "Once Upon a Time," but she's not quite reached the status of a household name.

If you're unfamiliar with the popular video game, it may have been a little jarring to suddenly hear the "Toreadors March" from the French opera "Carmen" blasting through the speakers of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in the trailer for Universal and Blumhouse's film adaptation of "Five Nights at Freddy's." As seemingly random as the needle drop might seem to non-fans, this is actually a reference to the earliest non-original song played in the series. When the power goes out at night, a little music box-like rendition of the song is emitted from Freddy Fazbear's animatronic, turning the song into a terrifying omen of the dangers to come. The original game uses a sample from "1905 Regina Music Box: Classical Overture" from Hot Ideas Inc. The tune was the most used music box of the franchise and has become Freddy Fazbear's signature leitmotif.

When Universal and Blumhouse announced that Matthew Lillard had joined the cast of "Five Nights at Freddy's" as a "human antagonist," it was assumed that he was playing the twisted franchise villain, William Afton. However, the trailers and official press releases all list him as "Steve Raglan" a career counselor who helps Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) find his job as a security guard at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. But "FNaF" fans aren't stupid, and the fandom is one of the most dedicated out there. You can't fool us, we know that man is William Afton.

The World's First 3D-Printed Dress is Unexpectedly Sexy And Dita Von Teese is the only one who can wear it By Lizzie Plaugic Dita Von Teese is proving once again that she can make anything look good. Designer Michael Schmidt and architect Francis Bitonti debuted the first 3D-printed dress last week, designed specifically with Von Teese in mind. The decision to use Von Teese as inspiration, Schmidt said, was an attempt to reconcile old world glamour with new, futuristic technologies. The black mesh dress has an alien-at-a-cocktail-party look to it that few but Von Teese could pull off. Inspired by Fibonacci’s Sequence, or Golden Rule, the gown's design mimics patterns found in nature. Schmidt and Bitonti designed the dress digitally, then printed it. Here's how it works: The 3D printer deposits a layer of nylon powder, which is then hardened by lazers. The process is [...]...

Never shy, she took to Twitter to share the futuristic frock's significance. "History tonight @acehotel NYC: 1st ever #3D dress," the burlesque dancer gushed. Designer Michael Schmidt created the groundbreaking gown by using 3-D rendering technology and turning to printing company Shapeways to physically create the dress using powdered nylon. Post-printing, Schmidt spruced up his design with a glossy coat of black paint and 12,000 Swarovski crystals. The result? A...

Here's her latest update. As I was growing up, my mom was the ultimate armchair quarterback for Sunday football, and my 107-year-old great-grandmother - yeah, I said 107 - could name All the Philadelphia Phillies stats from memory. (Ironically, she never watched them on TV just listened to them on the radio) So, you might say that sports are in my blood. I also think that as a kid we went to every Reading Phils game.

Now that school's out and folks are slathering on the sunscreen, we figured it was time to take the temperature of the annual Summer Jam Sweepstakes — the race to dominate the airwaves (and your tanning playlist) during the long, hot months of the year.
So last week, we published our initial rankings in the race for the Summer Jam crown, a list that was topped by Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," with Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" and Lmfao's "Party Rock Anthem" following close behind. A whole host of other big-name stars — like Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Adele, to name just a few — also made the cut, along with some dark-horse candidates (like Foster the People, Maroon 5 and David Guetta...

Capcom has explained changes to the Dead Rising save system for the sequel. Product manager Mike Schmidt said that the firm wanted to address concerns and has accommodated more save areas for the player to use. "A lot of people didn't really like the save system for the first game so that's one of the things the developer wanted to address," he told Digital Spy. "It's still a 72-hour clock meaning that you've got to find Zombrex for your daughter, Chuck needs to clear his name because he's been framed for the (more)...

This documentary is screening as part of the All Sports La Film Festival and will be screening this Saturday. Information can be found on the website. In the interest of full disclosure, I was afforded press passes to attend this screening.
These days, Pete Rose looks like a Reno televangelist. Decked out in a striped dress shirt with "Hit King" embroidered on the collar (a design which he owns in several different color variations), unnaturally darkened hair, spangled boots, and a flashy gold watch, Rose and that famous gap-toothed grin weeps at adulation and preaches the gospel of baseball with fiery bluntness. He is not here to preach a loving and embracing sport but that of damnation and hellfire. Like a scarred and weathered Fred Flinstone, Rose is doing everything he can in his waning days, beseeching all who will listen to accept him into the hallowed gates of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The cast of TV's most hyped show this Fall, "Glee", were taking over the Citizens Bank Park on Saturday, October 31 to do the honor of performing the national anthem. The lots had been snubbed by NBC's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade but they delivered when tapped to perform at the World Series event.
The likes of Cory Monteith, Lea Michele, and Chris Colfer took a minute of Game 3 between Phillies and Yankees to sing the song in World Series jerseys and 'Stand Up to Cancer' shirts. But it was Amber Riley who took the center stage, belting out the first few phrases solo. When they got to the "bombs bursting in the air", fireworks were lit.
Phillies Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt then came out to throw the ceremonial first pitch. The crowd cheered for him and the ovation did not stop until Schmidt hugged baseman Ryan Howard and left the field.

Back when most of my friends were geeking out over their Mike Schmidt baseball cards or Spider-Man comic books, I was cataloging my own list of favorites. Sure, me and all my neighborhood friends loved baseball, comic books, and video games, but I'm pretty sure I was the only one who knew that Cujo and Cat's Eye were directed by the same guy; that the guy who directed Red Dawn also did Conan the Barbarian; and that Joe Dante was the man to thank for Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, and Innerspace. Obviously none of my pals really cared about this stuff, which is why they're all bankers and doctors whereas I'm a film critic and, um, the manager of a movie blog. It was with no small dose of enthusiasm...

Is "bobble-head" hyphenated? Someone remind me to ask Professor Rocchi. Anyway, collecting is fun. Especially if you're collecting things that make you happy. Like, for example, rare stamps or old coins or small bits of latex that were (allegedly) used in the original Giger face-hugger puppet. Kids love to collect action figures, comic books, and (I'm told) Barbie dolls, but we tend to get a little more discerning with our dollars as we get older. In other words, we quickly learn the value of a buck and therefore spend our "collectibles" allowance a lot more smartly. Hopefully.
But that's it. It's official. I'm definitely starting a bobble-head collection. No, not Dwight Schrute (although that one's hilarious) and not Mike Schmidt either -- but I'm going to devote two or three shelves to some of these toys. They're cheap, they're nifty, they work as simple "mini-statues," but they also elicit a...
