From Pixar making us cry our hearts out to Studio Ghibli leaving us depressed with Grave of the Fireflies, the medium of animation is no stranger to tugging at one’s heartstrings. And similar is the case with Bruce Timm’s magnum opus, responsible for the definitive version of Batman. While full of action, which is expected from the superhero genre, Batman: The Animated Series doesn’t shy away from pulling one’s heartstrings during the show’s more emotional bits.
Reflecting on such scenes, the animator recalled the time he was sobbing like a baby during one of the most gut-wrenching scenes in the show.

Amidst displaying the brooding vigilante at its top, Btas also succeeds in leaving fans on the verge of tears, most apparent with Heart of Ice, which changed how fans perceived Mr. Freeze.

Writer Matt Wayne is most popularly known for his work on the animated series Niko and the Sword of Light, Ben 10: Omniverse, and Cannon Busters. The writer served as the managing editor at Milestone Media, where he worked on titles such as Icon and Hardware. Milestone Media was co-founded by Dwayne McDuffie, who worked on Bruce Timm’s Justice League Unlimited. Wayne is also the writer of Shadow Cabinet and Heroes.
Matt Wayne joined Justice League Unlimited in season three as the head writer. As the name suggests, specifically based on the Justice League team, the animated series featured an array of superheroes from the DC Comics universe. The series is said to be a direct sequel to the Justice League animated series and served as the eighth and concluding animated series in the Dcau. Matt Wayne, in an interview, revealed the heroes he had the most fun writing for.

The Scarecrow, aka Dr. Jonathan Crane, is my favorite Batman villain. I've always been drawn to his eponymous motif, his horror-twinged stories, and how he contests Batman for the title "The Master of Fear." Hence, though "Batman: The Animated Series" holds a special place in my heart, I've always been disappointed that Scarecrow wasn't an A-list player.
Crane is the antagonist in only three episodes and in each one is mostly an obstacle for Batman to develop against. In his villainous debut, "Nothing to Fear," Batman is dosed with Scarecrow's Fear Toxin and haunted by an apparition of his father, leading to the Dark Knight's most famous line. In "Dreams in Darkness," the Fear Toxin drives Batman temporarily insane and he's locked in Arkham Asylum. He must escape both his physical and mental prison before Scarecrow can poison Gotham City.

"Batman: The Animated Series" is undoubtedly the founding father of DC Comics animation. Its success is exemplified by the cultural impact the series has had on the titular character and the genre itself. The show jumpstarted an interconnected animated universe, introduced Kevin Conroy as the definitive voice of the Dark Knight, and served as the entryway for many into the vast world of superheroes. 30 years after its initial release, the imprint left by "Batman: The Animated Series" is palpable to this day. But as it turns out, there were whispers of the show becoming a runaway success well before it even landed on television.
Created by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, "Batman: The Animated Series" coupled a neo-noir animation aesthetic with darker, thematically-rich writing that separated itself from other animated superhero projects. The Caped Crusader became a brooding figure that reveled in the shadows, synonymous with vengeance itself. Even during the earliest days of development,...

"Batman: The Animated Series" perfectly captured the essence of its comic source material, from the costumed characters of Gotham City to the personality of the metropolis itself. However, it only occasionally adapted comic storylines. Compared to the contemporaneous "X-Men" cartoon which slavishly recreated comic arcs, the "Batman" creative team was more comfortable putting their own spin on things. That's how Harley Quinn was born, after all.
The series did directly adapt from the comics on occasion, but even that came with stipulations. Paul Dini, the series' head writer and producer (not to mention the creator of the aforementioned Miss Quinn) had this to say in issue #99 of "Back Issue magazine:
"It's hard to adapt a comic directly for animation. The storytelling and pacing are different, and there might be other elements like excessive dialogue or graphic violence that don't translate well from one medium to the other. In the case...

After the beautiful restoration of Batman: The Animated Series to Blu-ray, now in time for holiday gift-giving is the Blu-ray edition of Superman: The Complete Animated Series. When the DVD edition arrived in 2009, I wrote in part:
“All the love and attention lavished on the Dark Knight was poured into this show, which was brighter and shinier, the villains larger in scope and giving the animators a chance to bust loose. Superman works great in animation and after the lackluster efforts from Filmation, Hanna-Barbera, and Ruby-Spears, this one clearly shows the potential fulfilled.
“As usual, the voice casting is fairly top-notch with Tim Daly alternating nicely between Superman and Clark Kent, sparring playfully with Dana Delany’s Lois Lane. Clancy Brown is wonderfully malevolent as Luthor and his ever-present menace is well handled, matching the reboot version launched a decade earlier.”

On September 18, 1964, a serious animated adventure series, demonstrating cartoons didn’t have to always be comical such as The Flintstones (still airing then on ABC). Instead, Jonny Quest captured the sense of exploration Americans were longing for thanks to the Mercury astronauts and the rising tide of espionage films, headed by James Bond. However, Jonny was a young boy, making him an ideal feature for the Friday at 7:30 p.m. slot.
While the 26 episodes are all that were produced, the show’s overall quality proved influential to subsequent generations of animators, comic book storytellers, and audiences. It has pretty much remained in syndication for the last forty years. Jonny Quest remained the benchmark for dramatic animated fare for decades, enjoying brief runs as a comic book (notably Comico’s 1980s run).

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is easily one of the best Batman films that has been made, especially to those of us who grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series.
It’s been twenty-five years since the movie was released in theaters and to celebrate the occasion the movie is getting a theatrical re-release for one day only thanks to Fathom Events.
Your chance to see the movie on the big screen will happen on Monday, November 12th. I also included a special trailer that was released promoting the special event screening that fans won’t want to miss!
In this animated feature set in the 1940s, the troubled yet heroic Batman (Kevin Conroy) is pitted against a mysterious figure who is rubbing out Gotham City's most dangerous criminals, and who many believe is the caped crusader himself. Batman's alter ego, millionaire Bruce Wayne, is about to get married to...

The second wave of Batmania was ignited in 1989 when Tim Burton finally got a big screen adaptation of the comic book hero into theaters. It was such a wild success in terms of merchandising that Warner Bros wanted more and quickly. Since features take two to three years, they needed something sooner and the success of their Tiny Tunes and Animaniacs encouraged them to bring the Dark Knight back to television.
Thankfully, the project was placed in the hands of Alan Burnett, Bruce Timm, and Paul Dini who were not only fans of the character but the earliest cartoon fare. Taking a visual cue from Burton and a stylistic one from the Fleischer Brothers Studio, they produced a Batman cartoon unlike anything from the 1960s or 1970s. Batman the Animated Series was sampled on prime time in September 1992 before launching on Fox Kids and for three seasons, there was nothing quite like it.

After witnessing the likes of Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Beware the Batman being granted Blu-ray releases, fans have probably wondered what’s been the holdup when it comes to Batman: The Animated Series getting the same treatment. Granted, those other shows are more recent and require less in the way of remastering, but that doesn’t change the fact that many of us have been waiting impatiently for such a thing to happen.
Fortunately, San Diego Comic-Con brought us confirmation that the series responsible for first introducing us to Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill’s respective versions of Batman and the Joker will, in fact, be coming to Blu-ray on October 16th.

After all these years, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is finally coming to Blu-ray! This is one of my favorite Batman movies and I've been wondering when Warner Bros. would finally get around to doing this! I'm surprised the studio waited this long to give the movie a high definition remaster.
The 1993 film has a new 1080p HD remaster and will include both the original 16×9 aspect ratio (1.78:1) and an open matte 4×3 (1.37:1) version.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm begins when the city’s most feared gangsters are systematically eliminated and the Caped Crusader is blamed. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain, the Phantasm, a sinister figure with some link to Batman’s past. Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his own name?

You can’t talk about the DC animated world without first prefacing the golden standard set by the now legendary Bruce Timm and his equally notable collaborators Dan Riba, Frank Paur, Paul Dini, and Eric Radomski. You just can’t. As the first serious DC cartoon series since Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice has big shoes to fill, which only seems appropriate because so does the show’s protagonists. A show about young hand-me-down versions of the more famous Justice Leaguers would have been so easy to write off as an attempt to recapture the lightning in the bottle that was Timm’s greatest serial achievement, but with its first season wrapped, there’s no question that Young Justice has the youth accessibility and storytelling complexity to make it a worthy follow-up franchise.

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! (Check out my interview with Jennifer Yuh Nelson for "Kung Fu Panda 2" right here)
The Annie Awards winners were announced yesterday at the UCLA Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

"Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards. Pixar's "Cars 2" received seven nominations, while Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" took eight nods but was oddly missing in the Best Animated Feature category.

For those who only knew the Justice League of America as the Super Friends must have been in for a rude awakening when they sat to watch the Justice League animated series with their kids. From 2001 through 2006, the Cartoon Network offered up what has since gone on to be recognized as the greatest comics adaptation of all time.
Super-heroes moving from the printed page to animated film have had a checkered path from Filmation’s 1966 Superman through Ruby-Spears’ 1988 effort with the Man of Steel. In between, there were some highlights such as 1968’s Spider-Man and some really low moments including the 1977 Batman show. The problem is that super-heroes need conflict in which to use their powers and abilities. With every passing year, parents fretted over the amount of violence their children were expose to, coupled with concerns over the kids imitating the exploits in real life and causing themselves harm.
