Creature (2011)
Written by: Fred Andrews, Tracy Morse
Directed by: Fred Andrews
Cast: Dillon Casey (Oscar), Serinda Swan (Emily), Mehcad Brooks (Niles), Lauren Schneider (Karen), Aaron Hill (Randy), Amanda Fuller (Beth), Wayne Pere (Bud), David Jensen (Jimmy), Daniel Bernhardt (Grimley Boutine/Lockjaw), Sid Haig (Chopper)
The creature feature genre is often the most neglected of all the horror subgenres. It takes a back seat to more bankable premises such as slasher and paranormal horror. A new good creature feature is about as hard to find as the creature in the movie itself. Back in the day (way, way, back) in the 1950’s, the creature feature held the lion’s share of what any horror fan would want to see. In my humble opinion, it’s the biggest gamble for anybody that has plans to make a horror film now. Out of the gate, it has two strikes against it.

Local legend has it, that an inbred man by the name of Grimley once lost his family to a monstrous white alligator, driving him to insanity. Some believe that in madness he was transformed into the very creature that now lurks in the fetid depths of the Louisiana swamplands. Prowling beneath the shallows, it stalks its prey.
An old-school monster movie, Creature sees Ex-Navy seal Niles, his girlfriend, and their friends on a road trip through the backroads of Louisiana. Stopping at a roadside convenience store, the group encounter the sinister Chopper (Haig), who recounts the tale of Lockjaw a creature who is half man, half alligator and feeds off human flesh. Chicago – After a particularly long work day, I often find it difficult to coax my mind to sleep. That’s when I turn to Video On Demand for some free and immediate assistance. Most moviegoers would probably search for a familiar comedy or predictable romance to help their eyelids grow heavy in the wee hours of the morning. Yet my insomnia-remedy of choice will always remain FEARnet.

Matthew Currie Holmes is probably best known to horror fans all over as "M" from Joe Lynch's Wrong Turn 2 and several other notable genre roles, but now he's embarking on a new career path that's taking him behind the camera - as a director.
Recently Holmes launched a new Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming first-ever feature film called P5YCH, which follows a group of survivors whose attacks served as the inspiration behind five of the biggest horror movies of all time.
Since we here at Dread Central are suckers for anything willing to throw the genre on its head, we recently caught up with the up-and-coming indie filmmaker to hear more about how he got started in the industry, making the transition to director and the plans for the feature film of P5YCH.
Read on for our interview with Holmes below, and make sure to check back here...

There have been movies about swamp monsters before, but few have received the national headlines that Creature is getting. Upon its opening a couple of weeks ago, the film experienced the worst box-office opening ever (for a movie opening on more than 1500 screens). Of course horror fans aren't the kinds of folks to care about box-office. So when I spoke with Creature's writer Tracy Morse last week, I asked him if all this attention will only serve to intrigue fright fans. Find out what he told me in the interview after the jump. How did Creature come to be? I wrote the first draft around 2001, and it was called Lockjaw. Basically, I've written a ton of scripts. Usually I try to put them in the one to two...

Last Friday, a movie was released to over 1500 theaters in the United States. There was no real marketing campaign, aside from a few ads placed in the wee hours on the SyFy Channel. There was no all-consuming star. There was no massive budget. Unsurprisingly, the movie, Creature, had one of the weakest debuts of all time, to the tune of $327,000 (or $217 per screen). That's the second-worst per theater average of all time, second to only the movie Proud Americans, which I have never heard of.
Given this knowledge, I had to go see it.

This weekend indie monster movie Creature hit 1,500 theaters nationwide, which, for better or for worse, is a pretty magnificent feat regardless. Starring Mehcad Brooks, Serinda Swan, Amanda Fuller, Dillon Casey, Lauren Schneider, Aaron Hill, Daniel Bernhardt, and Sid Haig, Creature (review here) is centered around a group of friends on a road trip in New Orleans who have the misfortune of meeting "Lockjaw," a fabled half-man/half-alligator during their travels.
Dread Central had the opportunity to chat with Creature writer Tracy Morse over the flick's opening weekend to discuss with him how his story has evolved since its creation some ten years ago, his thoughts on the final film, as well as what he's working on these days.
Dread Central: Let's start with how the idea for Creature came about since I know this is a movie that has been a long time coming for both you and director Fred Andrews.

There is a congregation of believers that devote their lives to the pursuit of grotesque beasts. You might call these monsters Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, the Jersey Devil, or Lockjaw, but either way these creatures are elusive and terrifying. Creature hunters bring us blurry pictures and provide us with those monster reality shows on SyFy, but what happens when they really find one?
When six friends set out on a road trip through the Louisiana backcountry, driver Oscar (Dillon Casey Valemont, The Vampire Diaries) decides to take a detour and find “The house Grimley built out of blood”. While Oscar and his sister Karen (Lauren Schneider Wrestling) are dead set on exploring the story of Lockjaw and his grisly home, the rest of their passengers aren’t so sure; maybe they should have just stuck to the map…

Wow, I almost missed this. As I said in the title to this piece, Creature truly did sneak up from the depths, for me anyway.
I had heard nothing (that I remember) about this flick until I started seeing commercials for it just a few days ago. Usually, studios and producers drop a ton of press a couple of weeks (or more) before these movies open, but Creature started getting the big push just a couple of days before its release tomorrow (September 9), which raises a red flag. Hey, at least it's getting advance press. Sometimes, these flicks get dropped into one theater for one day with no press (for example, Hellraiser: Revelations) before their imminent DVD issuance.
Creature oozes out into the light of day courtesy of director Fred Andrews, who has a fairly extensive background in production design. Andrews co-wrote Creature with Tracy Morse, who has acted, written and directed.

To help promote the upcoming horror film ‘Creature,’ a companion 30-minute television special, ‘Anatomy of a Creature,’ will begin airing tonight in major American cities. The special will air up until the movie’s theatrical release date on September 9, and showtimes and channels can be found on the movie’s official website. ‘Anatomy of a Creature’ will feature behind-the-scenes interviews from the cast and crew. It will also give new eyewitness accounts of, and mythology behind, the film’s monster, the Lockjaw. ‘Creature,’ which was directed by Fred M. Andrews, who co-wrote the screenplay with Tracy Morse, is rated R for bloody violence, grisly images, some sexual content, graphic nudity, language and...

Creature starring Sid Haig, Mehcad Brooks and Serinda Swan is a cool looking upcoming film that, to my knowledge, we haven't discussed yet here on the site. The film is based on a novel written by Fred M. Andrews and Tracy Morse and is set in the Louisiana Bayou, where a bunch of frie…...

Let’s face it horror fans: we want and rarely get classic rubber monster movies now days. CG has changed the game, but for the better? Occasionally, we get some glimmer of hope in films like Dylan Dog: Dead of Night and Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, and maybe in the upcoming prequel The Thing, but our wishes will soon be granted by director Fred Andrews in his debut, Creature.

Don't go into the woods! Don't go into the swamp! Don't leave your house! This is the day that Creature sears your dreams with terrifying swamp tales of death in theatres. This beast is part man and part alligator and thankfully, the locals have nicknamed him Lockjaw, for your amusement. You can face your bayou based demons with the first trailer for Creature below.
On a side note, Creature also pays homage to the 1982 classic Swamp Thing, while director Fred Andrews (Dark Ride) adds some more disturbing material, involving incest and possibly even symbolic bestiality.
