In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

Thirty-five years, seven feature films, and three seasons deep into an ongoing television series haven’t diminished Chucky’s bloodlust in the slightest. That’s no easy feat, even in a genre largely driven by surviving impossible odds and obstacles. With each new entry, Chucky somehow manages to grow even more maniacal and devious, adapting to bizarre new twists that a prolonged voodoo curse throws his way. Of course, that voodoo curse started it all 35 years ago today, when Child’s Play stabbed its way into theaters on November 9, 1988.
While Chucky’s journey continues to surprise through new revelations, characters, and sharp narrative turns, it’s anchored by the killer’s unrelenting pursuit of vengeance and his voodoo origins. That voodoo curse also allows for one of the most notable deaths in the series for its almost meta-levels of doll-on-doll violence.

As the daughter of Chucky franchise special effects artist Tony Gardner, director Kyra Elise Gardner offers a unique perspective on the killer doll’s lasting impact in the Screambox Original documentary Living with Chucky.
Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and franchise alumni Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Fiona Dourif, Alex Vincent, Christine Elise, Billy Boyd, John Waters, Tony Gardner, David Kirschner, and more spill their guts along with such notable fans as Marlon Wayans, Abigail Breslin, Lin Shaye, and Dan Povenmire, among others.
Here are 9 things I learned from Living with Chucky.

Sorry Jack, Chucky‘s back. Indeed he was in 1990, exactly two years following the release of Tom Holland’s 1988 blockbuster Child’s Play. By then, Brad Dourif‘s unstoppable Good Guy doll was a household name, feared by children and adored by teenagers across the nation. So, when Child’s Play 2 arrived, let’s just say Chucky came in a brand new bag.

Of all the killer dolls committed to celluloid, Chucky is one of the most recognizable. Since 1988, the ginger-haired Good Guy toy has been host to the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) and has since spread his mayhem across six sequels, a remake, and a successful television series about to go into its third season.
It all began with "Child's Play," first conceived by Don Mancini. The son of an ad industry veteran, Mancini aimed to satirize the stranglehold marketing had on kids. Before co-writer John Lafia and director Tom Holland touched the story, it originally lacked the serial killer or occult rituals seen in the final product. But the Chucky we know and recoil from would not only be possessed by Lee Ray and kill a man via a voodoo doll, but he would dispatch a babysitter, blow up an old acquaintance, attempt to kill a mother and two cops,...

Chucky. Charles Lee Ray. The Good Guy doll. Thirty-five years later, Brad Dourif‘s foul-mouthed serial killer from the toy chest is a household name, a movie maniac that every kid grows up to fear … and eventually love through laughter. But that almost didn’t happen as the road to the long-running blockbuster horror franchise is paved in rage and remorse.

The newest member in the killer doll pantheon, M3GAN is currently slaying at the box office, with a sequel already in early development at this time. Of course, killer dolls and toys are a subgenre in and of themselves in horror, and no face shines brighter than that of Chucky.
With M3GAN now providing Chucky with some excellent company on the Killer Doll Mount Rushmore, I think the time has come to give the oft dismissed third entry in the still ongoing Child’s Play franchise a reassessment – the Jack Bender-directed Child’s Play 3.
Long considered the black sheep of the franchise, it’s not particularly easy to find many champions of Chucky’s third outing. Creator, writer, and ongoing franchise shepherd Don Mancini has even voiced his disappointment in his own writing on the film. On top of that, the box office take was underwhelming, and fans are...

Over 30 years ago, horror fans were introduced to cinema’s most infamous, beloved, and fun-sized slasher – Chucky. While he has had quite the success on the silver screen and small screen, we’re going all the way back to where it started. Don Mancini’s original terrifying Child’s Play, directed by Tom Holland (no relation to the friendly neighborhood one), paved the way for the killer Chucky doll to become the formidable horror icon that he is today. Child’s Play 2 (directed by John Lafia with a screenplay by Don Mancini) ups the kill count, wisecracks, and special effects even if the terror takes more of a back seat this time around. But which Chuck is the one that you don’t f**k with? Only one way to find out: Face Off!

Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was, at its heart, an indictment of an ever-bloating Christmastime consumption frenzy. Between 1983 and 1986, Coleco's Cabbage Patch Kids were the most in-demand toy of the season, and stories were regularly written about the dolls' success and the riots caused by parents trying to buy them. Embittered by the frenzy, "Child's Play" screenwriters Don Mancini, John Lafia, and Holland wrote a movie about the hottest Christmas toy of the season -- in their script, an electronic talking interactive doll called a Good Guy -- coming to life and committing murder. The conceit was that a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) was mortally wounded when fleeing a pursuing cop (Chris Sarandon). With his dying breaths, he chanted a magical spell and shunted his soul into a nearby Good Guy doll. The doll comes into the possession of the young Andy (Alex Vincent) and...

Chucky is getting his voice back. Brad Dourif, who voiced the possessed killer doll in all seven “Chucky” films, will return for the TV series being developed for USA and Syfy by the franchise’s creator, Don Mancini.

David Kirschner, who produced all of the films alongside Mancini, will executive produce alongside Nick Antosca and Harley Peyton, under Antosca’s Eat the Cat production company. A lot of people might not know who John Lafia was largely due to the idea that a good number of people don’t follow directors, writers, producers, and so on and so forth, but being that he was a big name around the Child’s Play set and actually directed the second movie he was definitely someone of importance. Sadly the director/writer committed suicide recently, but there’s no reason as to why at this time. The most saddening part of this is that he’d helped to create a very sizable fan base as Child’s Play has throughout the years become a

This weekend sees the release of director Lars Klevberg’s Child’s Play remake, which gives a new tech twist – and Mark Hamill’s sinister voice – to the devilish doll. However, if you long for Don Mancini’s original, more supernatural take on the Good Guy toy, Amazon has the deal for you.
The original Child’s Play franchise is a horror staple at this point, comprised of seven movies from the 1988 original to 2017’s Cult of Chucky. If you don’t happen to own any of them on Blu-ray (or if you want to expand on the one or two you do have), Amazon is currently selling Chucky: The Complete 7-Movie Collection for $19.99. Not only is that 50% off of the list price, but it rounds out to a little under three bucks a movie. I can guarantee there’s not a single entry in this set that isn’t...

Have you ever watched a movie about a psychotic, genetically modified dog and found yourself wondering if it was in fact made by a psychotic, genetically modified dog? Such was the case for me while watching the new Scream Factory release of John Lafia’s 1993 killer canine flick Man’s Best Friend. Now, recently I’ve developed an affinity for the bonkers horror that came out of the early to mid ’90s. I can appreciate a movie that takes a crazy premise and commits to it. The problem with Man’s Best Friend is that it doesn’t quite know what it’s committing to.

With March in full swing, we have another big batch of horror headed home this week that genre fans should keep an eye out for, including one of my most anticipated releases of the month: Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition of The Craft (so excited to call the corners with this new Blu-ray!). Beyond that, we have even more great titles to get excited about, including the criminally underseen Kolobos from Arrow Video, Man’s Best Friend, featuring one of my favorites—Ally Sheedy—and Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing, which features some brilliant performances from the likes of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for March 12th include Garden Party Massacre, She Wolf, The Greasy Strangler: Special Director’s Edition, Lifechanger, Silk Scream, and The Wild Pussycat.

Usually, I have a pretty good idea of what has been on TV, what is on TV, and what will be coming to TV. But, no one is perfect and this one slipped right by me and that is there’s a Child’s Play series in development and Syfy has just landed the rights to the show.
It seems that in February of 2018 it was announced that there would be a TV series titled Child's play: The TV series and in June of that year franchise creator Don Mancini posted the below tweet:

A kooky, disposable caper that’s light on charm and heavy on nonsense, Hadi Hajaig’s “Blue Iguana” was conceived as a throwback to the golden age of VHS crime-comedies — as the kind of freewheeling late-80s’ fare in which anything could happen because everything turned a profit on home video. And maybe, if you squint really hard, you can see the faintest shades of films like “Something Wild” or “Miami Blues” mixed into this manic parade of dumb criminals and even dumber plotting. Alas, anybody who watches Hajaig’s movie that closely will be more transfixed by the enormous gap between what the writer-director was going for and what he ultimately got.
Harkening back to John Lafia’s 1988 “The Blue Iguana” (a forgotten video store treasure starring Dylan McDermott as a bounty hunter) and Michael Radford’s more recent “Dancing at the Blue Iguana” (a Daryl Hannah/Sandra Oh...

From Freddy Krueger to Jason Voorhees, Ghostface to Leatherface, the horror genre hasn’t exactly been left wanting for memorable villains through the years, but few are able to evoke the same level of primal fear as Chucky, that pint-sized devil doll that first scurried onto the silver screen via Child’s Play all the way back in ’88.
November 9th, 1988, to be exact, meaning that this week marked a very special occasion within the horror community. In fact, one could argue that November 9th ought to be celebrated as International Chucky Day, as John Lafia’s follow-up Child’s Play 2 also launched on that same day 27 years ago.
Since that time, Chucky has cemented his place in cinema’s pantheon of weird and wonderful movie villains, and this year’s Cult of Chucky proved that, yes, even after three decades, Brad Dourif’s demented Good Guy doll can still strike fear in our hearts.

Let’s talk memorable movie killers for a second. Since Mrs. Bates first slashed her way through the shower curtain in Room 1 of that roadside motel in Psycho (1960), franchise-minded murderers have had a hard time of it in the consistency department, regardless of how strong they may have lunged out of the gate. Established classics of the genre, like Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street have all given birth to an array of sequels, remakes and reboots that may have extended their nasty protagonists’ shelf life, but none could approach their origins in terms of frights or filmmaking quality.
The exception to this rule of inconsistency and ever-diminishing returns in serial killer movie franchises seems to be the maniac who may have been the most unlikely to succeed, or certainly to endure, to begin with. He would be Charles Lee Ray (played with customary intensity...

So there’s this horror movie competition that takes place on Facebook every October, and this is my first year participating. I’m still a little lost, so bear with me. I have watched more than this, but these are the movies I watched during the week of Oct 4th – October 11th, the first official week of The Madness. I hope I can squeeze some more in this week, but having a 4 year old makes that tough to do. I think I had a pretty good week considering all obstacles. Plus, I saw some great stuff this week. Some revisits that I try to do annually, as well as some new movies, not released to theaters yet.
Late Phases (2014) – 2 pts
Director: Adrián García Bogliano
Easily misunderstood, but still solid. We don’t get much in the way of werewolf horror, so it’s good to support it when we do.

If you're a horror fan in the Los Angeles area, then the New Beverly Cinema has probably had your weekend plans covered once or twice. This Saturday it's a 35mm screening of 1990's Child's Play 2, complete with a pre-movie Q&A with awesome guests.
Screening this Saturday, February 22nd, at 11:59 Pm, Child's Play 2 is part of Brian Collins' Horror Movie A Day / New Beverly Midnights ongoing series. It means you get to enjoy one of the best films in an admittedly terrific franchise, and it should be an absolute joy to experience with a group of enthusiastic horror fans.
The New Beverly Cinema is located at 7165 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Tickets are only $8 and can be purchased here. The doors open at 11:59 Pm, and the event will feature a Q&A with screenwriter/Chucky creator Don Mancini and director John Lafia.
