The character of Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) was introduced in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Dr. Marcus had invented a revolutionary terraforming technology called the Genesis Wave which could be fired into a planet and rearrange the entire world's ecosystem to make it livable. In "Khan," the technology was still untested, and Dr. Marcus was searching for a life-free planet -- sans even scant microbes -- to terraform. With her was her bitter son David (Merritt Butrick) who expressed quite openly how much he hated the formalism and military underpinnings of Starfleet. He would rather carry out scientific experiments with his mother in peace.
It would eventually be revealed that Dr. Marcus was an old lover of Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and that David was actually Kirk's long-lost son. "Star Trek II" was at least partially devoted to Kirk reconnecting with Dr. Marcus,...

As Strange New Worlds inches closer and closer to the timeframe of Star Trek: The Original Series, the amount of references to that iconic show are naturally increasing, almost exponentially. Although we’re still firmly in 2259, the world of 2265 – and Kirk’s Enterprise – seem right around the corner. In the Uhura-centric adventure, “Lost in Translation,” Paul Wesley returns as James T. Kirk, this time finally from the Prime Universe. In addition to having a standalone adventure with Uhura, the return of Kirk to Strange New Worlds also brings a lot of Trekkie loose ends closer together.
Here are all the big canon references and Easter eggs we caught in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, “Lost in Translation.”

Despite the box office success of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” movies, the iconic sci-fi franchise has been exclusively focused on television for the past half-decade. Paramount initially planned more sequels to the Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto-led franchise after 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” with everyone from Quentin Tarantino to Noah Hawley taking stabs at script ideas. But none of them ever materialized, and for the moment it appears that Trekkies will have to be content with the cornucopia of series currently streaming on Paramount+.
But, in the spirit of Marvel-induced multiverse madness, that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to ask… “What if?” In a new interview with Esquire, Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, who worked on “Star Trek Beyond” before creating “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” opened up about a sequel they wrote that never made it to production.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay revealed that when they were picked to write the follow-up to the 2016 film “Star Trek: Beyond,” they had envisioned a film that would bring back Chris Hemsworth to reprise his role in the 2009 “Trek” reboot as Capt. James Kirk’s supposedly dead father, George.
Payne and McKay have spent the last five years writing scripts with billions of dollars in Amazon money behind them for “The Rings of Power,” but once upon a time, they had been attached to write the long-delayed fourth installment in Paramount’s “Star Trek” reboot film series.
Now, in an interview with Esquire, they have revealed what they had planned.
Through a quirk of Starfleet technology, Kirk’s father, George, would have found himself hurtling forward through time and coming face-to-face with his fully grown son, played by Chris Pine,...

Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne have found success as the showrunners of Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” but before they resurrected Middle Earth it was the Starship Enterprise they tried to get off the ground. McKay and Payne wrote a “Star Trek Beyond” sequel for director S.J. Clarkson that would’ve served as the fourth film in the J.J. Abrams-backed reboot series starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and more. The script, which McKay and Payne have rarely spoken about, featured Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, father of Pine’s James Kirk.
“I would love to tell you about it,” McKay told Esquire magazine, opening up in detail for the first time about the “Star Trek” movie never made. “We worked on a couple of ‘Star Trek’ movies. The one you’re asking about would have been the fourth in the franchise,...

It’s been nearly four months since Captain America and company took down the forces of Hydra (and dismantled Shield along the way), and so, after the new cinematic adventures of the X-Men and Spider-Man from Fox and Sony, film fans are eager for another trip to the Marvel Studios “movie universe”. With this new feature, that arena gets a major expansion. That’s because they’re getting away from their comfort zone. Actually light years away. We’re not trodding the same ground as Cap and Tony Stark (although much of the Thor flicks bounced between Earth and far-off Asgard). We’re probably nearby that “galaxy far,...
