Despite the efforts of festivals around the world, releasing and distribution companies, and streaming channels, which have gotten rather more intense during the last few years, the majority of titles produced in Japan, S. Korea and Hong Kong, which number hundreds every year remain unknown, particularly to the Western audience. As such, we decided to focus on this type of films exactly for our April-May tribute. And to be totally sincere, not all will be great just definitely worth watching. Here is the first batch
1. Three Resurrected Drunkards (1969) by Nagisa Oshima (Japan)
“Three Resurrected Drunkards” is an excellent sample of the cinematic tendencies of both Oshima and a whole group that tried to renovate cinema during the end of the 60s and the 70s, by combining new cinematic approaches with pointed sociopolitical commentary. The result definitely demands some knowledge of the climate of the era and the overall mentality of the Japanese towards foreigners,...

Despite having directed some excellent films, as in the case of “Dog Bite Dog” and “Love Battlefield” and a masterpiece in “Limbo”, Soi Cheang's filmography is actually filled with titles of questionable quality, to say the least. “Shamo” which is based on the homonymous manga written by Izo Hashimoto and illustrated by Akio Tanaka definitely lies in the second category.

In an expectedly failed effort to fit 34 volumes of a manga into a 105 minutes movie, the script revolves around Ryo Narushima, a young man who ended up in prison for killing his parents. While inside, he is being tortured and abused, with the permission of the notorious warden, Principal Saeki, who seems at least as sinister as the convicts. Just before he commits suicide, though, Ryo is saved by Kenji, a karate master who is in prison for killing the Japanese Prime minister,...

The recently released ‘Shōgun’ has received widespread praise from critics, earning a 99% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics appreciated its visual appeal, cultural authenticity, and adaptation quality. The acting performances were particularly highlighted, making it one of the standout shows of 2024.
It’s no surprise that the cast of this mega-hit is currently in the spotlight, with Hiroyuki Sanada taking center stage. Sanada portrays Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a strong military leader and ruler of the Kantō region. As one of the five Regents governing Japan for the young heir of the late Taikō, Toranaga is a descendant of the Minowara clan (Minamoto clan), who historically held the position of shōguns.
Variety recently interviewed Sanada about his future plans. During the conversation, the interviewer presented him with options among major Hollywood franchises such as Star Wars and Marvel. Sanada’s response was quite intriguing:

There's an entire generation of movie lovers who first encountered Jackie Chan in the "Rush Hour" films. The actor, director and stuntsman didn't have a huge love for the franchise at the time, perhaps because they barely scratched the surface of what he was capable of as a choreographer. Still, his buddy cop films hold a special place in the hearts of countless action fans, and his rapport with co-star Chris Tucker isn't half bad, either.
The "Rush Hour" trilogy hasn't aged the best in the intervening years, thanks in part to its director, Brett Ratner, who was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017. The film's "East meets West" humor would also never fly today, making the franchise something of a time capsule for irreverent, 2000s humor. Still, we could never get enough of Chan and Tucker — that's why we're all still holding out for that potential "Rush Hour 4." While...

Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" comes out just prior to the 70th anniversary of Ishiro Honda's 1954 original "Gojira," and audiences have been on quite a journey throughout those decades.
By the lore of Honda's film, Godzilla was a massive amphibious animal created by nuclear bomb test radiation. He was more than a dinosaur that could be defeated by weapons. He was a physical manifestation of post-war nuclear devastation, a monstrous legacy of what weapons of mass destruction have wrought. Mass destruction only leads to more mass destruction. The 1954 film's scientists ultimately have to invent an even more devastating weapon, the Oxygen Destroyer, to defeat the beast. It is a somber, sad movie about how Japan -- about how humanity -- is unable to break a cycle of wartime annihilation. It wouldn't be until 1995's "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," however, that a monster would rise from the remnants of the Oxygen Destroyer.

Chaos Theory even features an older version of Camp Cretaceous character Darius Bowman!
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous told the story of dinosaur fanatic Darius Bowman, who was given the opportunity to visit Camp Cretaceous, an exclusive adventure dinosaur camp on Isla Nublar. Once there, Darius met five other teenagers—Ben, Yaz, Brooklynn, Kenji, and Sammy—who were also chosen for the once-in-a-lifetime experience. It feels appropriate that Tomoki Kanazawa’s “Sabakan” is set in the summer of 1986: the year Rob Reiner’s “Stand By Me” was released. And while the two films end up very different, the Nagasaki-set family film starts with a very similar character dynamic.
Sabakan is screening at Camera Japan
Takaaki (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) is a struggling writer and divorcee. Suffering from writer’s block, he reminisces about the summer of 1986, when a shared experience with a classmate had a lasting impact. Kenji (Konosuke Harada) is from a poorer background than most at school; the eldest of five siblings of a struggling widow. While others tease Kenji, Takaaki (the younger played by Ichiro Banke) remains straight-faced. A fact that Kenji notices.
Unexpectedly that summer, Kenji drops in on Takaaki to take him to nearby Boomerang Island, where there have been recent sightings of dolphins. Along the way, they encounter delinquents,...

For many cinephiles, especially those with a keen interest in Asian cinema, one of their first encounters with Japanese cinema comes in the shape of Takashi Miike’s works. Given the sheer number of features he has made ever since he got started at the beginning of the 1990s, this comes as no surprise. Movies such as “Ichi – The Killer”, “Dead or Alive” and “Audition” have cemented the reputation of Miike internationally and introduced many to his cinematic style, which has proven to very influential among his colleagues as well. However, with over 100 films directed, there are obviously a number of them which are either simply bad (“Salaryman Kintaro”) or have gone under the radar as Miike’s more popular works cast a shadow over them. One of these examples is “Blues Harp”, which is not only an overlooked gem in his filmography, but also, in my opinion, one...

A heart-warming middle-of-the-road drama about loss and progress by the director of the Netflix series “Hibana: Spark” (2016). Two years have passed since Kenji lost his wife, Kayo, due to dementia. Now, the 71-year-old starts to feel the same symptoms and tries to find ways to counter the process. He joins the Long and Healthy Life Club, where he befriends the eccentric Mr. Hashimoto. They sign up for a swimming course given by the once-professional athlete Kaori, who also struggles with the fact that she is past her peak. Through their experience in the classes, they find new perspectives in life.
The Rest of Our Lives is screening at Camera Japan
Director Shinji Kuma demonstrates a compassionate glance at the concept of aging. The two storylines of Kaori and Kenji are well-written and not underlined by the often cheesy orchestration of the genre. By adding the somewhat perverted character of Mr.

Takumi Saitoh is a truly unique talent, who, after proving his prowess as an actor (he now has 165 credits to his name) continued in the same level as a director, with his segments in “Folklore” and “Food Lore”, and the features “Blank 13” and “Comply+-ance” being truly top notch. As such, his latest work, “Home Sweet Home”, based on the homonymous 2019 novel by Rinko Kamizu was one of the most anticipated films of the year. Let us see how he fared.
Home Sweet Home is screening at New York Asian Film Festival
Living in the harsh winter of Nagano, Kenji Kiyosawa, a sports instructor, is tired of being cold along with his wife, Hitomi, and newborn. As such, when he stumbles upon a company that manufactures pre-built houses that implement a technology that can warm the whole establishment with a single air-conditioner, his enthusiasm is unprecedented, as much as for his wife.

Wes Anderson has once again recruited Jason Schwartzman for another one of his films. Over the past two decades, the pair have worked together several times, including on "Rushmore," "Fantastic Mr. Fox," and "Moonrise Kingdom." Now, Schwartzman is the star of Anderson's latest theatrical release, "Asteroid City," which premiered on June 16. The period film, which takes place during the 1950s, follows a group of gifted students and their parents who visit a desert town for the annual Junior Stargazer convention. During their stay, they experience a mysterious cosmic event together.
Schwartzman plays a war photographer named Augie Steenbeck, whose son, Woodrow (Jake Ryan), is a Junior Stargazer winner. Also making up the cast are Scarlett Johansson as actor Midge Campbell; Tom Hanks as Augie's father-in-law, Stanley Zak; Jeffrey Wright as the convention's host, General Grif Gibson; and Tilda Swinton as scientist Dr. Hickenlooper.

It’s been said that some species of bamboo can grow up to 2.91 feet per day or 1.5 inches per hour and practically nothing can stand in it’s way. This aggressively growing wonder of nature is sometimes confused with plants and trees, but it’s actually part of the evergreen grass family. Bamboo is the largest grass on the planet and can grow right through concrete. Imagine the damage it could do to the human body.

Poppy tunes open Vo Thanh Hoa’s screen adaptation of Kenji Uchida’s “Key of Life” (2012), following the first action scene that introduces one of the film’s three key characters – Thach (Kieu Minh Tuan), a notorious assasin who’s seen completing his task and then disappearing from the crime scene. In just a couple of minutes he will shake of a bunch of armed criminals by swiftly changing roles from one type of servant to the other, to be ridiculously defeated by a simple bar of soap. Just like in Kenji’s original, the fantom assasin gets knocked unconscious in a bath house, and wakes up with amnesia and a wrong locker key in his hand, logically believing to be someone else.

As we mentioned before, during the various lockdowns imposed during the pandemic, a number of “quarantine movies” were shot, essentially films that tried to function despite the restrictions. As time passed and the restrictions lifted, a new type of movie seems to be on the rise, the post-quarantine one, featuring people that are not bound in their homes, but still have to follow particular measures, especially wearing masks. Masaya Tsutsumi presents such a title, also juxtaposing with the concept of One Coin English Cafe, gatherings where participants can casually enjoy English conversation for a small price.
