The documentary Wild Horse, Wild Ride, directed by the husband-and-wife filmmaking team of Greg Gricus and Alex Dawson, follows a diverse group of trainers as they prepare to participate in the 2009 Extreme Mustang Makeover. This annual event is a contest in which 100 amateur and professional trainers present the results of their 100 days of work taming wild mustangs. The animals are then put up for auction and adoption to avoid federal corrals.
The entrants here include a Navajo ex-rodeo champ and his son, a roofer from Wisconsin, a Texan and his seventh wife, a PhD in biomedical engineering, a pair of New Hampshire brothers, and a single mom Arizona cowgirl. The first interactions between human and animal are fascinating, as the trainers apply different approaches and connections grow as the horses learn to trust their trainers. When it’s time for the big event in Fort Worth it feels almost secondary,...

Title: Wild Horse, Wild Ride Directors: Alex Dawson and Greg Gricus Director Cindy Meehl’s soulful, Sundance-minted “Buck,” which told the story of quietly charismatic horse whisperer Buck Brannaman, illustrated just about as well as any film could the unique and poignant connection between man and horse, and how taming wild or otherwise unruly mustangs is a process that often reveals as much about the owner as it does the horse. Following in its nonfiction footsteps (or horseshoe tracks, I guess) is “Wild Horse, Wild Ride,” an engaging look at a bunch of folks who try to do just that. As with many other documentaries of sub-cultural curiosity, “Wild Horse, Wild [ Read More ]...

Often playing more like a cowboy/cowgirl movie than a documentary, Wild Horse, Wild Ride takes the viewer on an unforgettable journey across the American Southwest where, together,...

If ever there was a movie that could make a statement against the maligned “Chick Flicks” moniker this could be the one. For all the awfulness that movies like Valentine’S Day or Leap Year or Going The Distance brought into the lives of women who wrongly assumed this was about as good as it’s going to get for them, a paid admission to this film will send a message that there needs to be more movies like this and they all need Kristen Wiig to oversee them. For if this Svengali can weave a tale that deftly splices the best parts of gross-out comedy, romance, female empowerment, yet wrap it up in a story that is at...
