In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "Under the Cloak of War", a Klingon ambassador named Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom) comes to visit the U.S.S. Enterprise on a diplomatic mission. "Strange New Worlds" takes place immediately after the Klingon War, and several of the ship's crew remember the conflict vividly, expressing prejudice and consternation to see a Klingon on board. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) reminds his officers to keep an open mind, but Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) cannot.
Through flashbacks, audiences learn the horrible wartime conditions that both Dr. M'Benga and Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) served under, and they were bleak. There weren't enough medical supplies to go around, and Dr. M'Benga had taken to storing injured soldiers inside a transporter pattern buffer, hoping to rematerialize them when more could be done. He also secretly develops a rare and dangerous steroid called Protocol 12 which temporarily increases strength and...

In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "The Siege of Ar-558," the U.S.S. Defiant is dispatched to a remote outpost where Federation soldiers have captured a Dominion communications relay. This was deep into the seasons-long Dominion War story ark, and "Deep Space Nine" was becoming increasingly bleak. When the Defiant arrives, they find that over 100 Federation soldiers have been killed in trying to keep the array out of the hands of encroaching enemies.
Ensign Nog (Aron Eisenberg) is part of the Defiant's team, and he has never seen combat before. The phaser fire and landmine explosions terrify him, and Nog ends up losing a leg in the battle. In "Star Trek," medical science is advanced enough to grow new legs without any issue, but Nog's sudden limb loss was horrifying. Two episodes later, in "It's Only a Paper Moon," Nog was back on Deep Space Nine, recovering with his new leg.

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
Remember when we first met the Ferengi, way back in “The Last Outpost,” episode five of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s first season? Gene Roddenberry and co. wanted so badly to make the Ferengi menacing, with their laser whips and hunched appearance. But despite Roddenberry’s plans, the Ferengi proved to be a terrible replacement for the Klingons as the Federation’s new big bads, and quickly found themselves reduced to occasional appearances throughout the rest of the series.
But instead of letting the Ferengi go to waste, Michael Piller and the producers of Deep Space Nine followed Rule of Acquisition #292: “Only a fool passes up a business opportunity.” They added Quark to the main cast, bringing back “The Last Outpost” actor Armin Shimerman to play him, and added his brother Rom (Max Grodénchik) and nephew Nog (Aron Eisenberg).

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
The Ferengi have popped up a few times before on "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Back in last season's "Hear All, Trust Nothing," when the USS Cerritos visited Deep Space Nine, we got to check back in on everyone's favorite bartender Quark (Armin Shimerman). In this season's latest outing, "Parth Ferengi's Heart Place," we again meet his younger brother, Rom (Max Grodénchik). Continuing on from where "Deep Space Nine" left off, Rom is the Grand Nagus (Chief Executive) of Ferenginar.
Why is the Cerritos visiting the Ferengi homeworld? Because Rom has plans to bring his homeworld into the Federation. This is quite an about-face for the Ferengi. They were introduced as villains in season 1 of "The Next Generation," but poor reception turned them into comic nuisances. It was "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" that gave them depth, and...

Talk about rags to riches. Once considered a blight on "Star Trek" with their introduction in "The Next Generation," the Ferengi have come a long way since an inauspicious appearance that even veteran "Trek" actor Armin Shimerman once called a "disaster." Originally conceived as an alien species that would pose a Klingon-like threat, the distinctive and prominently earlobed characters received a much-needed overhaul throughout "Deep Space Nine," where they were reimagined as a more comedic, profit-hungry, and staunchly capitalist society that functioned as a dark reflection of everything that the "socialist utopia" of Starfleet stands for. That's what makes it all the more meaningful that "Lower Decks" has now dedicated an entire episode to the fan-favorite Ferengi and, more importantly, the post-"Deep Space Nine" whereabouts of their newest leader, Rom.

In "Those Old Scientists," the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a magical time portal is discovered in the late 24th century by the characters from "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawney Newsome) accidentally activate the portal and are thrown back in time 120 years to where Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew discover them. For the sake of retaining timeline purity, everyone agrees that Boimler and Mariner need to be sent back to the future. The issue is that no one knows how to activate the portal in the 23rd century, as it requires a rare element that is near-impossible to manufacture, and it is emblazoned with symbols that even the talented Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) cannot translate.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
The 21st Rule of Acquisition teaches us “Never place friendship above profit.” By that measure, no one has proven to be less Ferengi than Terry Matalas. The Star Trek: Picard showrunner has always made a point of including his friends in his series, even if only in fun cameos. Take season two of Picard, which saw Impractical Joker Brian Quinn drop by as a dog walker in Guinan’s bar, or the addition of 12 Monkeys star Todd Stashwick to the Picard cast as USS Titan Captain Liam Shaw (Matalas co-created the Syfy series). It’s clear the showrunner likes inside jokes, even if the audience doesn’t always get it.
That tendency is on full display in the latest episode of Picard season 3, “Disengage.” While investigating the terrorist attack from the last episode, Raffi’s now-unofficial Starfleet intelligence mission leads her to a Ferengi criminal called Sneed.

Spinning out of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" expanded the iconic science fiction franchise into considerably darker and more morally ambiguous territory than its predecessors. Starring Avery Brooks as Captain Benjamin Sisko, the show took place on its eponymous Starfleet space station positioned by the planet Bajor and a wormhole leading to the Gamma Quadrant. As the series progressed, "DS9" would shift to longer-form storytelling as the installation became a focal point amidst the Starfleet and the Dominion's warfare.
With over 170 episodes across seven seasons, "DS9" had a memorable ensemble cast that pushed the final frontier into new directions that its successors thematically furthered, including "Star Trek: Voyager." From standalone character studies to emotionally searing tales of battle and sacrifice, "DS9" ran a wide gamut of themes and tones that redefined what "Star Trek" could and can be while earning a considerable amount of widespread acclaim.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
What’s fun about writing this series based on first time watches is that I only have a cursory awareness of the weird places the franchise goes. When Amityville is discussed in horror circles, you hear about “the one with the clock” or “the one with the dollhouse,” as well as insinuations that at some point the films go completely off the rail.
That means that pressing play on each successive entry is accompanied by an “is this it?” question: Is this one of the infamous entries? Is this where the franchise loses its way?
I’m happy to report that while The Evil Escapes isn’t a great film, it certainly isn’t a horrible entry in the series. If anything,...

The Funniest Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Easter Egg On Star Trek: Lower Decks Is A Hilarious Deep Cut
This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
Not only are the cast and crew behind "Star Trek: Lower Decks" major "Star Trek" fans, but some of the characters on the series are as well. While we're getting excited over fictional stories, some of the lower deckers of the U.S.S. Cerritos are just serious Federation history nerds, eager to celebrate all things Starfleet. In the season 3 premiere, the gang visited historic Bozeman, where Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell) had once made first contact with the Vulcans and ushered in a new era of civilization on Earth. Now it's a theme park, complete with souvenirs and a hologram of Cochrane voiced by Cromwell himself, and Tendi (Noël Wells), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Boimler (Jack Quaid) are beyond excited to experience all that it has to offer.

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 5.
Because everything in the 32nd century is brand-new for the Star Trek canon, it would make sense that the writers of Star Trek: Discovery could get away with not really referencing anything from the existing canon. To put it another way, how much do you really know about the year 1090 off the top of your head? The gap between Discovery’s point of origin in 2258 and 3188-3189 is huge. And yet, nerdy Star Trek Easter eggs and Huge call-backs to some of the most beloved ships and characters ever, endure.
From a surprise cameo from a famous film director, to a lesson in Mirror Universe history, and yes, the appearance of Captain Janeway’s beloved starship, here are all the Easter eggs we caught in the latest Star Trek: Discovery episode, “Die Trying.”

2019 was a rough year for those who worked on the Star Trek franchise and its fans.
Many people who were part of Star Trek's mission to "explore strange new worlds ..." passed away.
In their honor, let's take a look back at some of their finest TV adventures.
D.C. Fontana
Star Trek wouldn't be the Star Trek we know and love without D.C. Fontana. She wrote many of Star Trek's best episodes and shaped its most iconic character, Spock. She also wrote for Star Trek: The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
The Fontana penned Star Trek Season 2 Episode 15 is great as a standalone story. It may also be the franchise’s most influential episode. Star Trek: Discovery drew a lot of inspiration from the Spock family dynamic Fontana created in that episode.

All Rise is not your typical CBS fare.
Yes, it's a legal drama, but feels like a show ripped from the hands of ABC or USA Network. It deals with some heavy matters, but it maintains a lighthearted tone throughout.
Let's get one thing out of the way: This is the first CBS procedural I've liked since Stalker. That's a long time!
For a series premiere, All Rise Season 1 Episode 1 ticks all the boxes. It introduces the characters and conflicts very well, backed up with some solid acting, and witty dialogue.
Even more promising is that there's just enough from the supporting players to confirm that the creative forces have crafted convincing plots to serve the entirety of the episodes.
Simone Missick (Luke Cage) leads the cast here in a series that focuses on her becoming a judge who isn't a by the numbers type of person.
It's refreshing.

It turns out the Emmys were not the appointment TV viewers were waiting for.
Airing on Fox, Sunday's telecast slumped to just 5.95 million total viewers and a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.
This is down 39% in the demo from NBC's year-ago telecast.
Awards shows, in general, have been sliding in the ratings for years, but this is a worrying drop for what was once a highly rated awards show.
Related: Aron Eisenberg, Star Trek Actor, Dead at 50.
But the erosion may well be attributed to Broadcast-tv losing out in the awards game to Pay TV and streaming providers.
In fact, broadcast tv garnered just 14% of the wins.
Game of Thrones was the big winner, with 12 trophies, followed by Chernobyl with ten wins. Both of those shows are from HBO.
Over in the land of Amazon, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel scored eight wins, while Fleabag secured six.

Aron Eisenberg, an actor who played the first Ferengi to join Starfleet in the Star Trek spin-off Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, died on Saturday. His death was reported by his wife in a Facebook post. The cause of death was not revealed, but Eisenberg had received two kidney transplants, most recently in 2015. He was 50 years old.
“He was an intelligent, humble, funny, emphatic soul,” Eisenberg’s wife, Malíssa Longo, said in the post. “There will never be another light like Aron’s. The beauty that he was and the legacy he leaves behind is beyond words. I love him dearly and will miss him eternally. At the moment I’m not sure how to do life without him.”

The actor is survived by his new wife, Malíssa Longo, and two sons, Christopher Eisenberg and Nicholas Eisenberg. Longo announced on Facebook on Saturday morning that Eisenberg was hospitalized in critical condition, without elaborating. That night, she revealed that he had died. Aron Eisenberg, who played Nog on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” died Sunday at the age of 50, his wife Malissa Longo announced of Facebook.
“It is with extreme regret and sadness to announce that my love and best friend, Aron Eisenberg, passed away earlier today,” Longo wrote. “He was an intelligent, humble, funny, emphatic soul. He sought to live his life with integrity and truth.”
A cause of death has not been announced.
Eisenberg played Nog on 40 episodes of “Deep Space Nine,” which came as a surprise to him, as he took the role without being told any details about his character or how long he would play it. Nog is the first member of the Ferengi, a greedy alien race always looking for a profit, to join Starfleet thanks to the recommendation of Captain Sisko.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was a real departure for the franchise as beforehand, the series had a focus on exploration, with Tos and Tng following more or less the same path of the crew of a ship encountering a new situation and having to solve it every week. But with DS9, which was set on a space station situated at a strategic location, the franchise got a little bit more complicated.
While we still got episodes that took on the usual Trek template of exploration, there were also storylines examining interstellar trade, political maneuvering and the morality of the Federation. Though a definite change of pace for the franchise, it was fantastic and has gone down in history as not only one of the greatest Star Trek shows of all-time, but one of the greatest shows, period.
Of course, a lot of that was due to its extremely talented and likeable cast as well,...

Warning: If “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” was a seminal show for you in the ’90s, the documentary “What We Left Behind” will probably make you cry. The platonic ideal of a loving tribute, this crowdfunded documentary directed by “DS9” showrunner Ira Steven Behr and “The Captains” producer David Zappone gathers nearly every key member of the “DS9” family to look back on arguably “Trek’s” most progressive and game-changing series.
Behr puts himself front and center in the documentary, breaking the fourth wall periodically as a quasi-narrator and guide through “DS9’s” legacy. Full of touches that will invoke memories of the show’s most iconic moments (including a hysterical post-credits gag or two), “What We Left Behind” is almost like Behr’s memoir of the making of the show, albeit with a ton of familiar faces popping in to add their two cents.

As of September 8, “Star Trek” will have officially been a part of American pop culture for 50 years, and it has one of the most robust and passionate fandoms in pop culture history. Fandom is basically a synonym for love — and “Star Trek” is currently in the process of telling some fans how to express their love.
It has been, to be frank, a bit of a mess.
How One Fan Film Set Things Off
In May 2016, one of the nerdiest things ever written was filed with the United States District Court. In a ruling by Judge R. Gary Klausner, His Honor declared that a lawsuit filed by Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios should proceed, because:
“Although the Court declines to address whether Plaintiffs’ Claims will prosper at this time, the Court does find Plaintiffs’ claims will live long enough to survive Defendants’ Motion to Dismiss.”

Some films aren’t served very well by their titles. A name is just a name, but then again, first impressions can seal the deal. I didn’t see The Horror Show until about a week ago. The key word is anything, and I will see anything with Lance Henriksen in it. He’s become the stuff of legends. He’s one of the few character actors that have...

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.

The Puppet Master series is very dear to my heart. Discovering the films many years ago as a teenager browsing the shelves of my local video store, I have grown up with the franchise, following it through thick and thin, good and bad… I’ve owned every iteration of the films on rental VHS, sell-thru VHS, DVD and now, thanks to the good folks at 88 Films, on Blu-ray.
Following the release of the original Puppet Master back in August, 88 Films are following up with the two immediate sequels, Puppet Master 2, which expanded the roster of puppets with one of my favourites, Torch, and Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge, which many consider to be the pinnacle of the series and which has since spawned two related sequels of its own in the recent “puppets vs. nazis” flicks Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (which...
