Winter had a chilling effect on Broadway last week, with most shows reporting at least some downturn at the box office and overall receipts dropping nearly 10% from the previous week.
In all, box office for the 24 productions totaled $21,192,251 for the week ending February 11, with attendance of 187,573 down about 12% from the previous week.
Only a half-dozen shows bucked the downward trend, most notably Sweeney Todd, which on February 9 welcomed Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster as the permanent replacements for Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford (understudies had been filling in since the originals departed January 14). Grosses for the Sondheim revival were up $402,763 for a $1,260,185 total.
Joining the roster was The Notebook, just a few seats shy of selling out all of its first three previews at the Schoenfeld Theatre. The production, with music by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunstetter, grossed $364,678 for the three performances, with a healthy average ticket...

Singer-songwriter Ani Difranco will make her Broadway debut as ‘Persephone’ in the hit musical Hadestown, performing the role she originated on the 2010 studio-concept album by composer Anaïs Mitchell.
Difranco will begin performances at the Walter Kerr Theatre on February 9, 2024. The announcement was made today by producers Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, and Tom Kirdahy.
Difranco’s history with Hadestown began when she invited Mitchell to release the original studio album of Hadestown on Difranco’s label Righteous Babe Records. Difranco originated the role of ‘Persephone’ on the album, leaving what the producers’ announcement today described as “an indelible imprint on the character as the show evolved over the course of several years.”
“I could not be more thrilled to be joining the cast of Hadestown,” Difranco said in a statement. “It’s like I get to rewind to my New York youth and follow the road not taken.”

Corey Taylor has released his sophomore solo album, CMF2
The album sees the Slipknot frontman, who graces our latest Consequence Cover Story, surrounded by a cast of musicians he also calls his pals: bassist Eliot Lorango, drummer Dustin Robert, and guitarists Zach Throne and Christian Martucci.
Taylor and company worked alongside producer Jay Ruston on a set of songs that traverses the singer’s musical background. There’s grungy Alice in Chains nods like “Dead Flies,” fast punk rock (with guitarwork from Taylor himself) on “Talk Sick”, heavy alternative metal (“Beyond”) and references to his acoustic/folk influences like Ani Difranco and Ray Lamontagne (“Breath of Fresh Smoke”).
Notably the album was recorded using an old-school, hands-on approach that eschewed the use of heavy post-production and digital plugins. Rather, the songs were tracked live with some overdubbing, giving the LP a raw and live sound that is becoming more infrequent in modern hard rock.

Move over, Minx‘s Joyce: It’s Shelly’s turn to shine.
This week’s episode of the Starz comedy found the Prigger sisters making a trip to Joyce’s alma mater, Vassar. While Joyce nattered on in self-centered fashion about how excited she was to see her favorite professor and court her to write a blurb for her book, Shelly tried to share an update on all of the changes — read: her sexual awakening — taking place at home. The complex, fraught relationship between Persephone and Hades provides one of the two main storylines in Hadestown. In Greek mythology, Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, and Hades (technically her uncle) is allowed to abduct her and make her Queen of the Underworld. In Hadestown,...

The "V/H/S" series lets filmmakers go wild. It's a part of the horror franchise's appeal. Good or bad, the directors rarely pull any punches with their stories. The latest addition to "V/H/S" goes back to 1999, with directors such as Maggie Levin ("My Valentine") and Johannes Roberts ("The Strangers: Prey at Night") at the helm of its anthology entries.
For "V/H/S/99," Levin helms "Shredding" and Roberts is behind "Suicide Bid." Levin's tale follows an obnoxious punk band facing serious consequences for their behavior, while Roberts tells a story of hazing gone wrong, and they both capture the nasty, dark spirit expected from the series by this point. Recently, Levin and Roberts told us about crafting their horror films, shooting in graveyards, and lessons learned from the franchise.

After the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday night denied a request to issue emergency relief blocking Texas’ new law that bans abortion at six weeks and, say opponents, effectively eliminates access to abortions statewide, some big names in entertainment expressed their opinions about the legislation.
A group of prominent actors, musicians and other artists and companies swiftly responded to the news on social media. Reese Witherspoon, Alyssa Milano, Dua Lipa, Kerry Washington, St. Vincent, Eva Longoria Baston, Bad Robot and P!nk were among them. Many shared an image with the text, “I stand in solidarity with Texans & people everywhere seeking reproductive freedom.” The full list of the celebrities who support that sentiment is below; the vast majority of the signatories are women.
Washington also shared a link to a Planned Parenthood petition which, among other things, maintains that “health care — including safe, legal abortion — is a human right.

Jimmy Fallon and his Tonight Show house band the Roots have been experimenting with “at-home remixes” during quarantine, using household objects to remotely perform iconic pop songs on the show.
Last month, they teamed up with Sting for a socially distanced performance of “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” and now they’re back with a much more uplifting number, “Dancing With Myself,” featuring the one and only Billy Idol.

Zoë Boekbinder first met the inmates at New Folsom Prison in Folsom, California, in 2010 — and four years spent volunteering led to an album that would become Long Time Gone, a collaboration between Boekbinder, incarcerated men, and Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babes Records and the Prison Music Project. The album is out June 5th.
“There are two million people in prison in the U.S. and each one of them has a story to tell. Nine of them are on this record,” Difranco tells Rolling Stone. “The stories and the music...

The Indigo Girls have announced their first studio album in five years. Look Long, the duo’s 16th LP, arrives April 24th.
Ahead of the record’s release, the band has posted the funky new song “Shit Kickin’.” It’s Emily Saliers and Amy Ray’s recollections of growing up in the south and paints a more true-to-life depiction of a rural existence than the idealistic one often heard on country radio.

Los Angeles native Angelica Garcia is not just another It Girl. The daughter of Mexican and Salvadoran parents, the 26-year-old singer-songwriter alchemizes regional Mexican folk sounds with her indie rock grit and R&b heart into fight songs, which illuminate every facet of her blended, multicultural experience. This year Garcia went from hometown heroine to nationally-acclaimed artist after Barack Obama shared her song, “Jícama,” on his Best of 2019 playlist.

In this week’s episode of our Useful Idiots podcast, hosts Matt Taibbi and Katie Halper are joined by Ani Difranco. The singer-songwriter shares how she turned the raps, poems, and songs of incarcerated writers into a collaborative album, Prison Music Project.
“Should you listen to this record start to finish, I think at the end the feeling you come away with — I hope — is ‘wow.’ You relate,” says Difranco. “You feel, ‘they’re just like me.'” The longtime activist hopes the album will humanize mass incarceration for listeners.

Hadestown, the eight-time Tony Award-winning musical by Anaïs Mitchell, gave fans a holiday gift on Friday with a special music video for its original love song, “All I’ve Ever Known,” performed by cast members Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada (portraying Orpheus and Eurydice, respectively). The clip sees the pair walking cheerfully through Times Square together on a snowy day, overlaid with the song’s romantic lyrics.
Mitchell wrote the book, lyrics and score for the musical, becoming the first woman in years to have sole credit on a Broadway musical’s writing.

Amber Gray had been simmering Off and Off Off Broadway for about a decade when, in 2016, she appeared to arrive fully-formed – to Broadway audiences, anyway – as some sort of next-generation diva, a new force in the world of musical theater, landing a knock-out performance as Countess Hélène Bezukhova in the Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. “Charming,” her spotlight number from the musical, seemed (still does) destined to secure an early place in a lasting personal repertoire, sure to be shout-requested in untold numbers of concerts to come.
So in a way, Great Comet was both a culmination and a first act. Now Gray has been Tony-nominated (Best Featured Actress/musical) for her current performance as Persephone in Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown. A hit critically and with sell-out crowds, Hadestown is Mitchell’s uncannily prescient re-do of the Orpheus myth,...

The cast of Hadestown stopped by CBS This Morning to perform two songs from the Broadway show ahead of the Tony Awards on June 9th, where the musical is nominated for 14 awards.
The cast, featuring Fates Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, and Kay Trinidad, sang a funky rendition of “When The Chips Are Down” from the Anaïs Mitchell score. Actors Amber Gray, André De Shields, and Reeve Carney also performed a striking version of “Wait For Me” during their time on the show.

The set of Hadestown, the Broadway musical up for 14 Tony Awards on June 9th, features a set with wildly swinging lamps and a trap door that hurls people into the underworld. But as the show’s auteur, Anaïs Mitchell, demonstrates, the show wasn’t always so hi-tech. Putting down the iced beverage she’s sipping in a coffee shop in Times Square, a few streets south of the theater hosting Hadestown, Mitchell remembers the way the earliest version of the show tackled a scene in which one of the leading...

In her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, Ani Difranco details a lot of her first experiences: learning to play guitar, writing songs and putting our first albums. Will Ani Difranco wear a dress?
It’s the day before the Broadway premiere of Hadestown, one of the year’s most talked about new musicals, and Difranco doesn’t know what she’s going to show up wearing to the show’s red carpet.

“Why do we build the wall, my children?” asked folksinger Greg Brown, playing the character Hades, on the 2010 recording of Anaïs Mitchell’s “folk opera,” Hadestown.
“We build the wall to keep us free!” answers the chorus, over ghostly pedal steel.
“Who do we call the enemy, my children?” he continued.
“The enemy is poverty, and the wall keeps out the enemy, and we build the wall to keep us free!” his subjects respond, circular logic building in concatenate phrases until it reaches the rub: “We have work and they have none,...

“Eventually country radio is going to get its shit together and play everyone,” Maren Morris told the crowd gathered yesterday at Cmt’s Next Women of Country showcase at Nashville’s City Winery. There to celebrate the 2019 class and accept the annual Impact Award presented by Natalie Hemby, Morris (part of the 2015 class) peppered that “eventually” with a certain kind of punch: maybe country radio will get its shit together, and maybe it won’t. But Morris, along with Cmt’s Leslie Fram and co-host Cassadee Pope, and the new class — comprising Anna Vaus,...
