Many filmmakers, even including Kevin Smith on a recent podcast, have spoken of how the tools used to make someone laugh are similar to those used to scare. So, it makes perfect sense how well comedy and horror go together. Especially with a novel concept, horror comedies can be a lot of fun. In the case of this week’s newest effort of this ilk, Deep Murder certainly has a terrific hook. Far more funny than it is anything particularly scary, it’s the sort of film that has a ton of fun with its silly concept. High art, this is not, but it’s more than funny enough to recommend. The movie takes place within a soft core porn video. Literally. It opens with an old fashioned VHS beginning and everything. At first, characters like Babs (Katie Aselton), Doug (Jerry O’Connell), Hugh (Quinn Beswick), Jace (Chris Redd), and of course,...

"We need to find him before he finds us..." "Sounds like something a murderer would say." Screen Media has debuted an official trailer for an awkward indie horror comedy titled Deep Murder, a wacky new spoof combining soft core porn cheesiness and a horror who-dun-it mystery. The film is the feature directorial debut of "Funny or Die" veteran filmmaker Nick Corirossi, to give you a sense of the comedic sensibilities in this, and it's got all the usual campiness you'd expect with this kind of concept. The story follows a group of people trapped inside a mansion making a porno, who start dying one-by-one. Starring Jerry O'Connell, Christopher McDonald, Katie Aselton, Stephanie Drake, Quinn Beswick, Chris Redd, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Josh Margolin. This doesn't look that terrible, but it doesn't look any good either. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nick Corirossi's Deep Murder, direct from Smf's...

The La Film Festival has placed a heavy emphasis on diversity in its competition film slate, with 42% of the films directed by women and 39% helmed by people of color.
The 24th edition of the festival is also positioning itself as an event for unveiling lesser-known talent. It will take place Sept. 20-28 as it moves from its traditional June slot to the fall awards season.
The Los Angeles event follow the Venice International Film Festival, which begins in late August; the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over Labor Day; and the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, which starts on Sept. 6. The festival will end just as the New York Film Festival begins.
“Our mission of finding fresh new voices from different geographical and cultural axes remains true,” said L Film Festival director Jennifer Cochis. “These storytellers are united by their ability to transport, impact and inspire audiences with the power of their craft.

Forty feature films including 24 world premieres highlight the official La Film Festival competition lineup in the fest’s move into the crowded fall festival corridor, away from their previous early-summer perch.
Among the movies in competition is the highly regarded Swedish film Border (Grans) from director Ali Abbasi, a Neon pickup out of Cannes that took the top prize in that festival’s No. 2 competition, Un Certain Regard. It is listed as a “California Premiere,” which means it likely will show up first in Telluride, Toronto or both before Laff, which runs September 20-28. It will play in the World Fiction Competition across a field of categories that also include U.S. Fiction, Documentary, La Muse, Nightfall. Short Films, and Episodes: Indie Series from the web.

The League and Legion’s Katie Aselton is among those set to star in a movie described as a “basically like a softcore version of Pleasantville,” according to Variety. To clarify: This is a wacky-sounding, high concept project called Deep Murder, about denizens of the porn world who start to develop beyond their stereotypes once a serial killer is in their midst. So essentially, the murderer takes on Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire’s job in the aforementioned Gary Ross picture. In addition to Aselton, the film is also set to feature reliable character actor Christopher McDonald; Johnny Simmons of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World; Stephanie Drake, otherwise known as Mad Men secretary Meredith; and two of its own writers, Josh Margolin and Quinn Beswick.
Margolin and Beswick are responsible for the screenplay, along with Nikolai Von Keller and Benjamin Smolen, while Nick Corirossi, who has worked for Funny Or...

Some really cool news has come out of the Cartoon Network camp today. Variety announced that Cartoon Network's Adult Swim has some pretty awesome plans to ensure that their current, future, and past fan bases will all be entertained. One of the steps they are taking is to bring us new episodes of Samurai Jack. Earlier this year, Adult Swim announced the series revival would be coming, but this solidifies their plans, and there are a ton of other new announcements that Cn has revealed:

Alyssa Milano possesses beauty and brains. One day after her "sex tape" leaked on Funny or Die, the Mistresses star made an appearance during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City on Thursday, Sept. 5. Rocking a sultry Lbd, Milano's black mini-dress featured a sheer yoke that accentuated her cleavage. Sure, she's always been sexy, but who's to blame for leaking Milano's "sex tape" with Nick Corirossi? That would be Mike Farah, Funny or Die's president of production. "I just thought it was a really smart way to make a statement about where we are socially in this country, how people are more likely to click on a link that says 'sex tape' than legitimate...

Carmen Electra showed her wild side in a pair of leopard-print spandex on the set of a recent "Funny or Die" video.
Electra slipped into the animal-print leggings and a sheer, plunging top for a Nick Corirossi-directed video for the comedy website. The 41-year-old looked amazing while filming on a bridge and hanging with the crew during the nighttime shoot.
Earlier this month, the former "Baywatch" babe turned heads at the 2013 Do Something Awards when she walked the red carpet in a backless, blue satin gown that hugged all her curves.
It's no surprise Electra stays in such great shape, considering she has her own workout regimen, the Aerobic Striptease, which debuted nearly 10 years ago.
"I think with the aerobic striptease, no one was expecting it and there was nothing like it at the time," she told Star magazine at the Do Something Awards. "I was dancing a lot...

Funny or Die’s feature-length Steve Jobs biopic starring Justin Long has arrived. It’s long. It features at least one scene of virtual sex and two acid trips. It’s not fair to call iSteve (written and directed by Ryan Perez) a 78-minute sketch — it’s actually a movie, mostly. (“Cut entirely on iMovie,” the credits tell us.) Long’s Jobs himself speaks to us from a velvety-dark room. Is it heaven? What it is is a version of Jobs’ life from the peanut gallery: He’s a “renegade, a rebel, one of a kind, a bit of a loose cannon,...
