This article contains spoilers for the Young Sheldon series finale.
After witnessing George Sr.’s (Lance Barber) death in the last moments of the penultimate episode, fans knew that the Young Sheldon finale was going to hurt. However, this two-part finale is also by far the most well-written and beautiful hour of the series.
It’s a showcase of grief and healing, featuring each family member dealing with this monumental loss in a different way with Sheldon (Iain Armitage) at the center of it all as we say goodbye to the Cooper family. Ending a series is never an easy task, especially when it includes a fan-favorite character’s death, but somehow, the writers have made sure the story ends on a hopeful note.

We don't have to worry about Young Sheldon being cancelled by CBS since it's already been renewed for seasons six and seven. Given what we already know about Sheldon Cooper's young life, it seems likely those will be the final seasons. Still, if the ratings are strong enough, perhaps the show could continue and follow the boy genius to CalTech. Stay tuned.

This weekend marks the much-noted 50th anniversary of “The French Connection’s” release. “The Manor” perhaps inadvertently stirs memories of another William Friedkin joint, 1990 horror “The Guardian,” which was so disliked by the director that he omitted mentioning it in his otherwise fairly comprehensive memoirs. This addition to the second “Welcome to the Blumhouse” quartet of genre features likewise offers an evil tree-entity, to perhaps less campily absurd results — which is both a good and a bad thing.
Writer-director Axelle Carolyn’s second solo feature (following 2013’s ghost story “Soulmate”) provides a welcome starring vehicle for Barbara Hershey, who hasn’t had one in some years. But . Completing the current “Welcome” package, “The Manor” makes its Amazon Prime bow alongside “Madres” on Oct. 8.
At her 70th birthday party, still-youthful widow Judith (Hershey) suffers a mild stroke. Three months later, she’s insisted on moving into a luxe elder-care facility, explaining “Whenever I become … diminished,...

Intergenerational conflict is only likely to get worse as Millennials grasp a problem-filled future for which they already blame baby boomers, while boomers hone their dislike of what many perceive as a generation of brats. No doubt many interesting films will riff on that theme. But their number won’t include “Tone-Deaf,” a horror-comedy caricature in which a malevolent old fogey squares off against an entitled young princess. Too cartoonishly broad to qualify as black comedy, and with no one to root for, this disappointing latest from Richard Bates Jr. isn’t funny, suspenseful or outrageous enough to satisfy genre fans. Others are unlikely to bite when Saban Films does a day-and-date release later this year.
Bates’ script starts with a running gag that elicits just tepid amusement the first time, then keeps resurfacing to diminished returns over the next nearly 90 minutes: We meet our heroine as a child performing a recital,...

While watching Simon get lured into Flova’s underwater realm, viewers of Clear Blue will experience a similar feeling of being drawn into it’s world of fantasy. As part of their thesis project at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles, director Lindsay MacKay, producer S. Brent Martin and cinematographer Mattias Troelstrup teamed up to develop and shoot a short film that, despite it’s 20-minute length, has the look and feel of a feature film. And now, as Clear Blue continues to earn awards and praise, festivals are lining up to screen the film. Clear Blue tells the story of Simon (Chris Sheffield), a brand new lifeguard who’s assigned the early shift at his local swimming pool. Simon becomes obsessed with Flova (Nancy Linehan Charles), an elderly woman and the pool’s only patron during those morning hours, after he discovers her unbelievable capacity to stay submerged under water.

Watch the trailer for Clear Blue, a narrative short screening at SXSW this year in the “Medium Cool” category, and you’ll probably be intrigued if not a little hesitant to discover why a naïve young lifeguard, Simon (Chris Sheffield), is tripping over his swim shorts for a woman in her 60’s (Nancy Linehan Charles).
Go see Clear Blue and you’ll discover that there’s more behind the teenager’s obsession with and desire for the early-morning regular at the pool.
The film opens in silence with a lovely clip of foreshadowing as a pair of red swim trunks float slowly to the surface of an indoor swimming pool. One of my favorite moments in the film is Simon’s first early-morning shift in which he stands before the empty pool with his lifeguard whistle around his neck and practices chiding imaginary swimmers,...
