"The question is: how are you still alive?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie film titled Lazarus, another indie superhero flick about a man who gains special powers. "A super powered vigilante fights an organization to free a city from darkness." From filmmaker R.L. Scott and actor Sean Riggs, who also produced this. A man is killed, but his death is a brief affair. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovers he has been gifted with extraordinary powers that allow him to super-heroically fight the organization responsible for plunging his city into darkness. Sean Riggs stars as Lazarus, joined by Costas Mandylor, Shane Brolly, Nicki Micheaux, and Mya. This looks like it has some badass action scenes, and I really dig the red eyes when he has powers. But is there anything more than just that? Kick some ass. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for R.

An entomologist, how fortuitous.
It’s the season to come to town and the mayor wants to kick out the expert because it might hurt their business. But it isn’t summer on Amity Island, it’s the Dia de los Muertos in a small Mexican village and it isn’t sharks, it’s a swarm of vicious insects. One thing is the same—we’ve got a man-eater out there. In Deadly Swarm, Dr. Daniel Lang (Shane Brolly) is an entomologist brought to this small village to take care of the malaria-carrying mosquitos. The mayor (Roger Nevares) isn’t too pleased that Lang’s sanitized mosquitos are now annoying the populace ahead of the Dia de los Muertos celebration. Meanwhile, the semi-crazed Dr. Fortsen (J. Patrick McCormack) has captured a swarm of deadly wasps and given them to a drug-smuggler to take back to the United States. This smuggler...

I still remember watching the flick The Swarm within the last couple of years. The flick redefined the word "boredom," and the problem was only compounded by its ridiculously long runtime. Hopefully Lionsgate's new flick Deadly Swarm can get some buzz back!

Hot vampire chicks, leather-clad with guns blazing. That’s the appeal of Underworld, yes? It certainly doesn’t hurt, that’s for sure. And while the ever-expanding franchise blasts its way into theaters with a fourth entry this weekend, I’d argue there’s more to these things than sexy British chicks wielding all kinds of deadly weapons.
Taking a look back at the three films preceding Underworld Awakening, we find a flawed but ambitious series centering on an enduring war between vampires and werewolves. There have been missteps along the way: leaden direction, questionable writing and horrible performances, but the sheer scope of the franchise continues to impress. Underworld may not be a work of blazing originality, but it’s an ongoing R-rated action fantasy worth a bit more than its detractors might suggest.

Long before "Twilight," there was one vampire vs. werewolf franchise that stood above all others: "Underworld."
Launched by Len Wiseman -- a former music video director and protégé of Roland Emmerich who would go on to helm the fourth "Die Hard" and the "Total Recall" remake -- these action-horror hybrids take a few cues from the "Blade" and "Matrix" films to create their own unique blend of B-movie bliss.
On the eve of the fourth film, "Underworld: Awakening," we're giving you a quick primer on all the things that go bump in the blue-tinted night and look sexy doing it. Of course, it goes without saying that this guide will feature Spoilers galore, so consider yourself duly warned.

Little is known about the upcoming film Spread starring Ashton Kutcher other than it features one of the worst actors working in Shane Brolly. Looking at this new one sheet and the cast list, it does happen to have the hottest thing about Adventureland in Margarita Levieva. I’m none too familiar with the film or David Mackenzie’s work so here’s a plot synopsis from IMDb:

The players: Director: Patrick Tatopoulos, Writers: Howard McCain, Dirk Blackman, Danny McBride, Cast: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Shane Brolly, Kevin Grevioux
Facts of interest: Patrick Tatopoulos did the creature design in all three films.
The plot: The film explores the origins of the battle between the Lycans and Death Dealers.
Our thoughts: It’s about time to close the gates to this underworld for good. Patrick Tatopoulos’s prequel “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is not exactly a monstrosity, but the third installment in the series that kicked off with “Underworld” in 2003 fails to offer us anything we haven’t already seen in the predecessors.

The Death Dealers and Lycans return to the big screen in Patrick Tatopoulos' "Underworld" prequel "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," starring Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Shane Brolly and Kevin Grevioux. Here's what some Web critics have to say about the film:
• Ron Henriques at LatinoReview: "There's entertainment to be found in the picture and it does have its moments, because you don't come to see these movies for a dramatic story."
• Brad Brevet at RopeOfSilicon: "It isn't an absolute travesty, but you are getting nothing new and the repetitive nature of it all only equates to about 30 minutes of seemingly original storytelling -- if that."
• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "Downplaying the murky Vampire/Lycan mythology that grew to suffocate the previous films, "Rise of the Lycans" is a 90-minute-long horror passion play that benefits from brevity."...

The trailer for Screen Gems’ Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans, the third in the vampire-werewolf war saga, has appeared at the movie’s official website, and you can also check it out below. Directed by the series’ makeup FX creator Patrick Tatopoulos and opening January 23 in the U.S. and Canada, it dramatizes the early days of the conflict between the supernatural species.
As this is a prequel, previous stars Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman aren’t on board, but the movie gives returning Bill Nighy a bigger role (always a good thing), and Michael Sheen (who looks to have some 300/”This is Sparta!”-esque moments), Shane Brolly, Steven Mackintosh and Kevin Grevioux are all back as well, joined by Rhona (Doomsday) Mitra. You can find worldwide release dates and sign up for updates at the site linked above.

Entertainment Weekly today posted three official screenshots from Patrick Tatopoulos’ upcoming “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans,” Screen Gems’ prequel to 2003’s horror hit “Underworld.”
This time, the main story line examines the origins of the ruthless feud between the Death Dealers and the Lycans. Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen and Shane Brolly all return to reprise their roles from the first film and its follow-up, “Underworld: Evolution.”
Rhona Mitra will be stepping in for Kate Beckinsale, who played the lead character in the two previous films. “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans” is scheduled to open everywhere Jan. 23, 2009. Click right here to see all the pics at Entertainment Weekly.
I really enjoyed the first film but pretty much hated the sequel, so I can’t say I’m overly excited about this third adventure. Mitra is certainly a decent choice for the role of the new central character, but I have to admit Beckinsale looked way hotter.

TORONTO -- Kate Beckinsale has finally found a role she can really sink her teeth into -- that of a leather-clad, butt-kicking vampire warrior whose aristocratic blood-sucking race is under attack by the vicious lycans.
Conducting herself with a no-nonsense combination of toughness and grace that would give a certain tomb raider a run for her money, Beckinsale delivers even if "Underworld" doesn't quite manage to follow through on its initial promise.
While problematic pacing and bits of unintended silliness ultimately rob the British-German-Hungarian-U.S. co-production of its intriguing potential, it should still be regarded as fresh blood to the "Buffy" crowd, who'll likely generate enough boxoffice to ensure that Beckinsale returns to fight the good fight.
Unlike so many other entries in its genre, "Underworld" started out as neither a video game nor a comic book, but rather as a conversation between director Len Wiseman and friend Kevin Grevioux that led to a story of Shakespearean proportions that recast the Montagues and Capulets as werewolves and vampires.
Engaged in a centuries-old struggle, the future of both the sophisticated vampires and the feral lycans is about to be threatened by a nefarious scheme that would see the creation of a new interbred species that would combine the strengths of both underworld races.
Selene (Beckinsale), a top-ranking member of the Death Dealers, an elite vampire warrior class committed to hunting the lycans into extinction, stumbles onto that ulterior motive after she uncovers a lycan plot to kidnap a human doctor (Scott Speedman).
But her efforts to intervene are being thwarted by Kraven (Shane Brolly), the arrogant vampire leader who's rather jealous of the increasing attention she's paying to the mortal, as well as by ruthless lycan leader Lucian (Michael Sheen).
It turns out that the unwitting doctor has a connection to both clans, but let's leave it at that.
Director Wiseman, who started out in the art department on such films as "Men in Black" and "Independence Day", lends the picture an unmistakable "Matrix"-like sense of style, while Danny McBride's script shares a similar mythological construction, minus most of the psychobabble that overloaded "The Matrix Reloaded".
But despite the added filmed-in-Budapest atmosphere created by Tony Pierce-Roberts' dense cinematography, Bruton Jones' stylized production design and creature designs by Patrick Tatopoulos that favor prosthetics over CGI excess, "Underworld" keeps getting held back by an uncertain pace and a too-tight-lipped tone that elicits a few inadvertent snickers.
Hopefully they'll get it right for the sequel.
